For those who have been questioning a potential spin off for Ryan Murphy, Rachel Berry and Curt Hummel, the season opener of Glee may have been a tempting look at what's to come. Fans looking forward to this potential look at Hummel and Berry working on their theatre career in the Big Apple were delighted at the hints that happened throughout the show.
Jacob Ben Israel absolutely interrogated the New Directions' seniors. In a classic sort of high school senior experience they were asked about their plans for the future and during this, an interesting tid bit about what's going on with Sam and Mercedes is revealed. Apparently, his father took a job out of state, but of course, her new boyfriend Marcus soothed the pain a bit. You also find out in this episode that Artie and Tina are not actually seniors at all, but that they are juniors- at least, it is made official.
Sue seems still yet on the fence as to if she how she is going to handle her bid for Congress, torn between a hardline approach and doing what is best. The proposal she ran on was that she would run on a platform that would effectively close all of the public school's art programs but then, reject funding for them as well. This was with the intended goal of getting all students to their appropriate reading levels for their grades. Will, however, has other plans in addition to being quite bold in rejecting an incredibly annoying wealthy girl called “Sugar” who tried to audition for New Directions. Her cover of Big Spender is a moment for the mute button. If you remember Will getting replaced in April's Broadway musical, by the way- he won the Tony for it. Sue also made both Becky and Santana co-captains of the Cheerios. On one condition- that they get rid of, and completely wreck the purple pianos that Will had in the hallways.
Rachel and Kurt begin to make more plans for the future, as mentioned above. They're really gearing up to enjoy a great college career as theatre students when at the Dayton Doubletree mixer, they realize they may be in over their heads. All around them, other potential New York Academy of the Dramatic Arts students seem to have everything they have- but better resumes. Pulled right out of The Glee Project, Harmony, played by Linsay Pearce- performs an amazing song and dance that completely wrecks both Rachel and Kurt's already shaken confidence. As they bawl it out in the car, they then decide that they are going to hold fast to their dreams, and pinky swear with one another to make it happen.
It was little surprise that Quinn dropped from New Directions and joined a group of rougher, tougher types known as the Skanks. Puck was dumped by Zizes, who also dropped out of the group. Finn begins a greater quest to figure out just what he wants to do with his life, but also, starts some self analysis into who he really, truly is. Blaine gets his transfer to McKinley and then leaves that old Warblers blazer behind.
The show closes after a huge food fight directly following a fun performance of “We Got the Beat” and Santana getting kicked out of the club entirely.
