Good Eats: Top Banana

Starting with a quest into the trackless jungle – more or less – Alton explores the world of bananas. He starts with a little history and a little lore, then wends his way through their culinary strengths. Along that path he reveals recipes for Banana Ice Cream and Bananas Foster. Then he takes a quick detour to the banana’s genetic cousin, the plantain, sharing his recipe for Fried Plantains. Whether on cereal or prepared in more complicated ways, the banana is seriously... Good Eats!

Recap

Somewhere within a trackless jungle, a rubber raft beaches on the side of a river. Two men disembark. One of them consults an old and tattered map, locating on it a destination. The other, clearly a porter, follows heavy laden. The first man periodically halts the trek and then resumes it, stopping briefly to remove a spider or two from his shirt. Then he sees a banana plant. The man is Alton, clad in the style of Indiana Jones, and he has reached his prize! The porter disgustedly turns away; bananas aren’t the treasure he signed on to locate. Too bad he fails to notice the enormous spider on his back.....

Episode Notes
Cards
  • Although bananas are fruits, the plants they grow on are actually herbs.
  • Greenhouse grown bananas are the third largest export of Iceland.
  • No ice cream maker? Blend the mixture on high for 30 seconds then freeze. It won’t be quite the same, but it’ll still be good eats.
  • The concept of the “top banana” comes from an old burlesque routine in which the comic that gave the punch line received a banana.

The Food Network and its site refer to this episode as "Going Bananas"

Episode Quotes
Alton: Hey, Zapata? You ever heard of those really, really big banana spiders?
Zapata: The ones as big as your head?
Alton: Uh-huh…
Zapata: They say they can kill a man with one bite.
Alton: You don’t say?
Zapata: Why do you ask?
Alton: No reason…
(Zapata turns revealing an enormous spider on the back of his pack.)

(Alton tosses a plaintain skin onto the floor)
Offstage shopper: Ahhhhhhhhhh... (Crashing sounds)
Alton: (wincing) That had to hurt!

Cultural References
The entire opening scene is a parody (or homage, if you like) of the opening scene from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. The old map, the man we don’t see right away, the heavy laden porter and the spiders all appear in the film. When he finally appears Alton sports a fedora of the sort popularized by the Indiana Jones character. He also mentions the “Temple of Doom.” This was the title of the second Indiana Jones film.

Shall we begin?
Alton says this as he starts preparing Bananas Foster. Considering the large number of James Bond references throughout the series, this is likely a reference to when the murderous Mr. Kidd, disguised as a waiter, begins preparing Shish kebab for James Bond. Mr. Kidd says the same thing to Bond moments before attempting to impale him with a pair of fiery skewers. Fortunately Alton’s recipe turns out better for the diner!
