Good Eats: A Pie in Every Pocket

The pie is a delicious dessert, there's no denying it. But it does have a lot of drawbacks: getting the first piece out, you need a table and a fork and a plate. It is not a food for the convenience age. Or, it it? Alton offers a look at a different sort of pie, a kind of food enjoyed all over the world in one form or another. Here in the United States, Alton calls these treats Pocket Pies, and whatever you fill them with, they are... Good Eats!

Recap

Alton contemplates a fruit pie sitting on a window sill. An emblem of all that is good, he muses. But, in this form – the traditional pie plate – it is a tool of repression! Why? Well, you need a table, plates and forks, and even special tools to extract the pieces from the pan. And getting at that first piece is especially a challenge! It is surely not a dessert for the convenience age. But in its original form... Alton extracts a cloth wrapped lump from a pocket, and unwraps it to reveal a half-round hand-sized pastry. Southerners may be familiar with this, the original form of the pie, but most of America is not. It is convenient, tasty, and... Good Eats!..

Episode Notes
Cards
  • Many attempts have been made to declare the pastry Michigan's official food.
  • In France, a pocket pie filled with apples is a chausson aux pommes or 'apple sock'.
  • Traditionally Russina brides serve pirozhki (pocket pies) on the third day after the wedding.
  • The term docking comes from the Middle Dutch word dok meaning “to drill”.

The episode title is Alton's twist on a 1928 Herbert Hoover political slogan promising “a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage.”

Alton's blackboard refrigerator, where the title of each episode appears, calls this one, “A π in every Pocket.” The Greek letter π, or pi, is pronounced the same as the English word pie. Since the letter refers to the ratio of circumference to radius, and "regular" pies are round, many jokes have been made about these homonyms. Alton's pies, being half-round or rectangular, wouldn't work in those same jokes...

After the production credit there is a short outtake in which the foam rock does not fall on cue, forcing a new take.

Episode Quotes
Alton: Ah, the pie cooling on the window sill... It's not so much a dessert as an icon, an edible emblem of America, democracy, and all that is good!

Alton: (about cutting into a pie) And as for removing the first piece? Well, I'd just as soon take out my own appendix. With a pen knife.

Alton: Prepare yourselves, America, because the hand pie, or pocket pie, is gonna set you free. Not only is it convenient, it's tasty, and it's... Good Eats!

First Miner: It's me lucky day! (He holds up a pie stuffed with both savory and sweet fillings. Just then, a rumble dislodges a rock which knocks him cold. Alton snags his pie.)
Alton: No, actually... it's me lucky day!

Alton: (about removing the seeds from mango flesh) You know what? I'd rather remove the thymus gland from a gerbil.

Alton: Let's pie one on, shall we?

Alton: On September 14, 1964, the hand pie world changed forever, for it was on that fateful day that these (he holds up a toaster pastry) were unleashed upon the planet.
