The Backup Dan - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The scene opens with Serena looking for Blaire at the wedding reception, but she is nowhere to be found. Starting from an old couple, to Louis, she ends up asking everyone she comes across. However, the guests have already started leaving, and there is no sign of Blair. Not even for the goodbyes. Meanwhile, Gossip Girl is at her desk, telling her assistant that Blair’s confession about loving Chuck on her own wedding day has been the best thing ever for Gossip Girl website. And she is on her way out – isn’t she exhausted? On the contrary, she has never felt more invigorated. Meanwhile, Serena has looked in the bridal suite, sent security men to the roof, and all other places she can imagine. But it is slowly becoming evident that Blair has left the building. Serena tells Chuck about it, and he cannot believe it – until one of the Empire Hotel security men call up, to tell Chuck that Blair is at his place.

So Serena and Chuck get to the parking basement, where Nate is helping his newly found crush, and is lending her a hand with the crates. She is one of the catering girls, whom Nate has started liking of late. Serena explains the princess is a runaway bride, and the catering girl is all in to give them a hand. She will drive her van through the back streets towards wherever they need to go. Meanwhile, Louis gets a phone call from his mother, who tells him to keep smiling, and not show any signs of distress. Blair is nowhere to be seen. Louis lets on that he was so angry, he could not wait – and already told her that the marriage will be only in name. When Serena, Chuck and Nate arrive at Chuck’s apartment, it’s not Blair, but Gossip Girl.

She managed to get inside by telling one of the dumb security guards she is Blair. Nate, Chuck and Serena are livid, but all they can do is hear what she has to say. She doesn’t know where Blair is going, but she was the last person to have laid eyes on her. Meanwhile, as Dan sits at the driver’s seat and Blair in the back seat of the ‘Just Married’ Rolls Royce in a basement parking, she reveals her plans about getting a divorce. She needs to find Louis for that, but there is one place on the planet where she can get divorced by herself. Dominican Republic! So was this a plan something she had thought about beforehand, so that she can get back to Chuck. No, this has nothing to do with Chuck. Minutes later, Dan is walking Blair into the airport, as she swishes in her Vera Wang wedding gown.

At the ticket counter, Dan learns that all direct flights to Dominican Republic are booked, and the airlines might be able to find a ticket via Orlando. Before long, Blair is worried about everyone staring at her. When Dan explains it is the wedding gown, she quickly spots a young girl, and asks for an exchange of her wedding gown for the cheapest clothes she has in her travel bag. However, the girl is more interested in who she is. Isn’t she Princess of Monaco? Where is the Prince? She manages to lie that she is one of the decoys whom disgusting paparazzi people like this girl will find all across the city. The girl goes away saying she is hardly as good looking as the real princess – she should have known. However, Blair couldn’t be bothered by the opinion of someone who uses a Samsonite bag.

As Blair gets to a store for changing her clothes, Dan gets a call from Serena. She wants to know where Blair is, and he tells her she and Louis have left for their honeymoon. Serena finds that hard to believe, but Dan tells her she should get back to the reception hall – where he claims he is also present. When Serena lets on they might be overreacting, Gossip Girl tells her Dan is lying. Besides, why should they always presume she is the liar. At the same time, Blair discovers that she will be unable to fly without a passport, which obviously she has not considered carrying as she is still a princess. Meanwhile, Rufus is arranging for closing celebrations for the Louis’ mother, Eleanor (Blair’s mother) and Lilly. They should get together over some of their favorite wine. Before long, Dan calls up Rufus from the airport, and tells him about what has been going on. He doesn’t want Dan to be a part of it, but hopes he is doing the right thing by helping Blair. Dan tells him not to spill the news to anyone at all.

Meanwhile, Gossip Girl finds Doroto, who is packing off for a vacation since Blair will be gone. However, she ends up getting locked inside – thanks to Gossip Girl’s wit. Back at the families party, when Eleanor and Louis’ mother are alone, Louis’ mother lets on she knows about Blair’s escape. And she suspects Eleanor knows about it too. And she reminds her of the dowry which Blair’s family must pay if she decides to end the marriage. Outraged, Eleanor is being coy when Lilly arrives, but Louis’ mother lets on that Blair has gone missing, and if they are not telling, she has other ways of finding out. Meanwhile, Nate calls off the date with her catering girl, when he overhears her lying to her mother about being at the library studying for an assignment.

In the airport lobby, Blair and Dan discover that Prince Louis has called for a press conference, in which he reveals Blair is nowhere to be found. He calls for help, because she needs it now. The stress of a royal wedding could have stopped her from being herself lately. Before long, the other passengers at the airport start clicking Blair’s pictures – and why not – as she unwittingly yells she is not liking being spotted so easily. The pictures of Blair and Dan at the airport flood the internet before long. And Louis shows them to his mother. Following them to the airport is Gossip Girl. At the airport hotel, Blair is being less than grateful when it comes to realizing what Dan is going through. Dan doesn’t want a fight, and he is about to step outside the door, when a knock drops on it. Meanwhile, Rufus breaks his vow of keeping Blair’s whereabouts a secret.

He lets on the news to Eleanor and Lilly. At the hotel door are Serena and Chuck. Shocked to find Blair with Dan, she cannot believe Blair is planning to go to Dominican Republic. And Chuck hopes to win her back. Before long, Gossip Girl has arrived, and she clicks the pictures she needs. Serena accidentally drops her bag – which contained Gossip Girl’s camera. So she was the one to have uploaded the video, isn’t it? Serena claims she was, and Blair blames her for hurting her on her biggest day. Serena leaves in a rage announcing Blair hurt her too, since she confided in Dan and not her.

Chuck promises he can help her out. He will take her to Dominican Republic. In comes Louis’ mother. Blair is not going anywhere with anyone – except with her son Louis. Blair must not forget her mother will have to sell her company in order to meet the dowry agreements in case Blair refuses to go with Louis. After she leaves, Chuck tries explaining to Blair that he can arrange for the dowry money. However, Blair won’t allow him to buy her freedom. It cannot happen this way. She will have to leave with Louis. That is how it is meant to be. Chuck stands with an expression less manly than himself. Nate finds his catering girl, and explains it never went well for him with girls who lie, and he had overheard her lying to her mother. The girl tells him her mother takes her trying to be an actress as something she is doing to damage her mother’s soul.

So she has to tell her she is in Michigan, and not NY. Meanwhile, Eleanor is laying into Louis, whom she will never let her daughter take – it doesn’t matter what she has to sell. However, down the steps comes Blair. She is ready for the honeymoon. She doesn’t want to save herself by destroying her family. Serena tells Chuck he should come out in the open about uploading the video now. She was just claiming to have uploaded it so that things could be better between him and Blair. However, while Serena never uploaded, neither did Chuck. Then who? As Blair and Louis set off in their car, press photographers surround them. Looking on from a distance is Dan. The episode ends.
