Pilot
Having never read the Gossip Girl series of books, I didn’t know much about the series going into this episode, but this episode definitely got my interest. I loved Josh Schwartz and everything he did on The OC, so chances are he’ll bring the same quality to this series. The promos leading up to this episode made it seem like the entire series revolves entirely around snobby, rich high school kids, but the promos didn’t do the characters and their personalities justice. There’s a lot more to each of the characters than a rich, popular private student, which should make for good character development in future episodes.

Blake Lively, who I loved in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, is just as great in this series as she was in the movie. The other characters are all pretty good too (Chuck is an ass, but there’s always that one character…), and a little Kirsten Bell each week, even though it’s just her voice, can’t hurt.

However, like any series aimed at teens, there’s cliché moments every so often that will probably get the series a “teen soap” reputation, but that’s to be expected. That and it was a bit slow at times, but as a pilot episode, it spent most of the hour setting up the plot and getting everything going. Next week’s episode ought to be less setting the scene and more plot and character development.

All in all, I enjoyed the episode. With The OC cancelled, I’m in the market for another good guilty pleasure, and this may be it.
