Oliver Wendell Douglas [Male Star], voiced by Eddie Albert (1)
Oliver is a New York City attorney who decides to give up his fancy law practice and pursue his childhood dream of becoming a farmer and living in the country. He purchase a farm, site unseen, only to discover that the farmhouse is more of a tumble-down shack than the lovely picket-fenced Victorian he'd imagined. His romanticized view of farm-life becomes further tarnished as he deals with the inconveniences of rural life, his wife's (Lisa) oddly surreal way of adjusting to the radical lifestyle change, and the eccentricities of the inhabitants of Hooterville. |

Lisa Douglas [Female Star], played by Eva Gabor
Lisa Douglas is the socialite wife of attorney Oliver Wendel Douglas. Lisa is of Hungarian descent and is distantly related to the Hungarian royal family. Lisa finds herself plucked from the lap of luxury in the couple's Manhattan Penthouse on Park Avenue and plopped in a ramshackle farmhouse bought sight unseen by Oliver when he decides to give up his sucessful law practice and move to rural Hooterville to become a farmer. As it turns out, Lisa has an easier time adjusting to the lifestyle change than Oliver. She fits right in with the other eccentric inhabitants of Hooterville, all of whom seem to have the sole purpose of irritating her husband. In one episode, she decides to surprise Oliver with cupcakes, She does so by putting cake batter in china tea-cups (hence 'cup' cakes) and baking them in the wood burning stove, which is the only appliance that seems to function correctly in the decrepit farm house. |
