Episode Quotes
Richard (opening voiceover): I've seen a lot of surgery residents come and go in my time, and they're all addicted - to surgery. It comes before food, before sleep. It becomes the most important thing. The only thing. What they don't know is that living on that high can eat them alive. Some make it through. They come out on the other side. They survive with their sanity intact. They become better doctors and stronger people. I didn't. I broke. I didn't kill anybody, and I give thanks for that every day, but I hurt people and scared the hell out of myself. I am 45 days sober today. I am Richard, and I am a grateful and recovering alcoholic.

Ellis: To Phillip.
Richard: May he rest in peace.
Ellis: You can't toast a dead Irishman with a soda pop, Richard. Get this man a vodka, Frankie.
Richard: You know I can't stand the taste of that stuff.
Ellie: It's time to learn. You're a grown-up, Richard. It's time to act like it.
Richard: I can't leave her, Ellis. I can't.
Ellis: We'll see.

Lexie: So you canceled your resident's surgery. Isn't that a little bold?
Cristina: She was worried about adhesions, right? Gimme candy!
Bailey: No adhesions. No candy. And it wasn't bold, Grey, it was stupid. But in this case, it was also necessary.

Bailey: Successes or failures, which teach you more?
Jackson: Failures.
Bailey: Yeah, but that was a gimme. Don't get too cocky.

Richard: Once upon a time, long before I was Chief of Surgery, even before I was an attending, I was a resident right here at Seattle Grace, just like you. You learn from everything in your residency. The patients, the nurses, the attending's. But you don't realize how you learn from each other. 1982, you were all in diapers. (goes to a flashback) Dr. Ellis Grey. Two-time-Harper-Avery award winner and my colleague on this case. A case that changed my life. Look around. The biggest influences in your life, are sitting next to you, right now.
Cristina (whispers to Mer): This is gonna get more interesting.
Meredith: Yeah.

Episode Goofs
Factual Error:

Dr. Bailey says that she became an intern in 2003, meaning she would have been in her third year when the show began in 2005. However, she is listed as having been in fourth year and the chief resident starting in season 4.

Kate Burton, who has played Ellis Grey on Grey's Anatomy, has blue eyes. Sarah Paulson, who plays the younger version of Ellis Grey has brown eyes.

The position of Dr. Webber's lime in his vodka in the final scene changes multiple times.
