Can’t Fight Biology - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The show opened with the large house some of the doctors and nurses rented together looking very crowded, especially the big bathroom and kitchen. Owen decided to show Christina, his wife, a fixer-upper house that he had found. It was basically falling apart upstairs, plaster and lath hanging from the ceiling and walls, windows broken out and pigeons flying around inside. Christina looked very dubious, but didn't want to hurt Owen's feelings. She said she would like to give it some thought before making a final decision. They went to the hospital with both voicing doubts in their minds.

A middle aged woman had driven her car, albeit accidentally, into a small laundromat, taking out the front wall and injuring a man and a young woman inside, including herself. They were immediately taken to the hospital and attended to, the driver of the errant car inquiring anxiously after the well being of the young woman, a stranger to herself. The young woman, Lila, confessed to Doctor Grey that she knew she had Huntington's chorea, a fatal nerve disease and had watched her own mother die of it. For herself, she was denying it out loud until such time when she could not. Meanwhile, Lila had decided to go to Brazil when she was able to do so and wanted to find herself a lover there. Doctor Grey observed Lila's right hand going into spasms caused by the Huntington's and advised her strongly to inform her own doctors of her disease, that it was wrong to keep them in the dark. Lila, after some deep thought and convincing by Doctor Grey, said that she would tell them.

A fifteen year old male, Jake, came to the hospital for xrays for his cancer ridden right leg, stating adamantly that he wanted to keep his leg at all costs. His doctors advised him that if the xrays and/or chemotherapy did not cure the cancer, that he might just have to have his leg amputated. Jake asked to be able to give a display of his dancing talent, ballet, which he was allowed to perform to his favorite music. After his performance, he turned to the doctors and told them to build him a leg that would allow him to dance like he had just done. The doctors and his parents were awed and amazed by his enthusiasm and dancing skill. The doctors said they would check into all the available treatments and see if they could come up with the one that would enable him to keep his leg. During a lunch chat in the sun porch room, several of the younger doctors were cracking jokes when a woman came up with an idea she had read in a medical journal. It dealt with replacing cancerous bones with cadaver bones. It was a risky proposition, but one that they thought might work. They finally decided upon cutting out the section of cancerous bone, a luckily small slice, and treating it to xrays and whatever else was determined to be able to destroy the cancer. An operation followed and once the slice of bone was properly treated, it was replaced within Jake's leg and the incision stitched up. It was determined by the doctors that the operation was a timely success and only time would tell if the cancer had all been removed. Jake's parents were very grateful and extended invitations to the doctors to their son's next performance, whenever that would be. Smiles were all round for the young patient and hopes were high.

A middle aged man was brought to the ER and found to have a very serious bowel obstruction. An operation was ordered by Doctor Bailey, but the patient caught Christina Yang, pulling her aside. He confessed that he had been harboring a certain type of worm inside his abdomen, trying to come up with a cure for asthma, having worked in labs all his adult life, feeling that these worms would help. He vomited whilst in his ER bed and told Christina not to throw his vomit away. She looked down into it and found a large worm, notifying Doctor Bailey. He begged and pleaded not to have the surgery, but if it had to be, to at least save his worms. The surgery was promptly performed, but his bowel perforated and the contents poured into his abdomen, prompting Doctor Bailey to pump it all out, inadvertently killing his worms in the process. Pieces of worms were saved, but no live ones made it through. Upon awakening in the recovery room, the man was very grateful to the doctors for saving his live, but mourned the "passing" of his worms. He indicated that he would do it all over again, harboring worms within himself, and was told that if he did do it again, that he could very easily die the next time. He said if that was what it took, that he would gladly do it again. Doctor Bailey just shook her head and arched her eyebrows at Doctor Grey.

Doctor Webber called Doctor Derek Shepherd's wife into his office about some small matter and during the chat, Mrs. Shepherd asked him if her mother, when she had worked with him in the past there, had ever told him she'd had alzheimer's? Doctor Webber said that she had not and Mrs. Shepherd said that she wanted to be tested for the gene.

Mrs. Shepherd had been to the fertility doctor that morning and been told that she had a hostile uterus, keeping her from becoming pregnant, meaning that her uterus carried fibroids. That had caused her to have a miscarriage previously and she was advised to just relax and do her best to become pregnant. She felt a failure for losing the baby and was not sure that Derek would want to stay with her if they could not have a baby the natural way. Derek told her that they could give adoption some serious thought if that would help.

The woman driver confessed to a couple of the doctors that she was furious with her husband for moving in with a younger woman, leaving herself all alone and afraid and angry. She had been driving down the street where her hubby and his paramour lived, discovering him in a nearby laundry, doing the other woman's laundry, the other woman not even present. She had been so overcome by anger and grief that she had inadvertently stepped on the gas and driven her car straight into the laundromat's front wall, injuring the young woman and her very own two timing husband. After confessing to the doctors, she told them she felt better, that they could not, by law, share her secret with the looming police. The doctors quickly told her that they were not lawyers and were obligated, by law, to tell the police. The woman driver broke down into tears and did not know what to do next. The doctors told her the police would have to be informed despite her feelings. The next day, the police questioned the woman driver.

Doctor Grey asked Mark Avery, her very handsome and fit resident assistant, to scrub up and assist in an operation she was going to perform. During the operation, Mark batted his eyes and openly flirted with Doctor Grey when seeking her permission to perform a part of the operation, which she said no to. Later on, Doctor Grey burst in on Mark with his shirt off in the changing room and he tried to use that to his advantage, exposing his fit body, but she told him in no uncertain terms, that if he ever tried that again, she would report him. He looked shamefaced and confessed that he had indeed been trying that, but would stop immediately. She smiled wryly and left, Mark gazing after her thoughtfully.

In the fixer upper house once more, Owen wearily climbed the stairs to the second floor to find his wife, Christina, sitting by one of the broken windows, staring out into the cool night. When she saw his face, she stood up with a broad smile on her face, raising a bottle of chilled champagne into the air and said, We,er, I bought this house and I thought that we could celebrate tonight". That brought a huge smile to his own face and he asked her if she was sure...she said of course and they shared the champagne happily.
