Doctors Torres and Robbins were packing their luggage prior to leaving for Malawi, Africa where Robbins would begin her work for sick children there. Torres made a comment that her partner couldn't possibly use all those kitchen appliances and to give some of them away. Robbins left the kitchen in a huff and resumed her packing elsewhere, leaving Torres looking puzzled. She looked at room mate Mark, asking him what he thought was going on with Robbins; he didn't know.
At the hospital, lung/heart transplant hopeful Roy was in bed chatting with Christina about being excited that his estranged daughter was coming to visit him when she walked through the door, calling Roy's name, which sent the patient into cardiac shock with the surprise of it. Christina yelled "CODE!", bringing fellow staff members rushing to help. Christina pounded Roy's chest and shocked his heart with the electric paddles several times, finally getting a heartbeat. The stress of the incident brought Christina to tears, reviving her old fears that she was not adequate to the task of being a doctor. Doctor Grey came in, saw Christiina's state of emotions and stayed by her, encouraging her, giving her advice about putting a heart embolism pump temporarily into Roy's chest. Christina was very anxious but said that she felt she was up to the job if Grey were to stay close by. Christina went to prep for the surgery.
Grey went to Christina's husband, Owen, informed him of the situation and asked him to talk to his wife, which he did, resulting in Christina getting angry and upset with Grey, but she could do nothing about it. Meanwhile, Owen began a long outdoor certification triage class for the residents in which they had to decide and triage multiple accident patients before an imaginary helicopter came to whisk the dummy patients away to a fake hospital. It began to rain heavily, complicating things. Resident Avery became angry after several hours of strenous effort on his part to perform on the dummies what he thought Owen wanted, then gave up and shouted he was quitting. Owen became equally angry, telling Avery that he could not possibly quit now, that his team mates were depending on him, that to quit now was to totally fail himself, his training and his team. Avery screamed back that he was done, he was soaked, very tired and exasperated, that if this had been a real emergency, the helicopter would have come long ago and the patients would have been cared for as they should have. He did not see the advantages of continuing in this deluge and that an end should be called to the certification class. Owen said that when it was done, it was done, not until. Avery stood up and stalked away in disgust. This only encouraged April to redouble her efforts. One by one, several teams were disqualified by Owen for various things they'd done wrong until only the blue team remained. The downpour only added to the students' problems as time went by until one female resident grabbed up several dummies one by one, tossing them into a nearby ambulance and driving the very short distance to the real hospital close by and began yelling for help. Only then did Owen yell to her that her team had qualified for certification and won the effort. She was jubilant, dancing in the pouring deluge with a male resident. Victory was hers and her team's!
Chief Webber bore a long face when he caught Torres and Robbins in a hallway, telling Torres how much he was going to miss her, that he had had very big plans for her continued absence at the hospital when Robbins had gone to Africa, but now that was moot. He said that he had hoped Torres would stay on,but of course the decision was entirely up to her. He praised Robbins for her past work at the hospital and once again commended her for winning the Carter grant, saying that he hoped she would accomplish what she'd set out for. Torres cast Webber an upset glance and walked out of sight with Robbins. Torres and Robbins quarreled because Robbins felt that Torres could better serve humanity by staying in Seattle where she was needed most, but Torres disagreed.
Doctor Bailey was asked to attend an autopsy on Mary Cortman, a young Alzheimer's victim, which said autopsy was intended to confirm the diagnosis. Bailey did not approve of the cavalier manner in which the female pathologist performed the operation, talking on her cell phone about dinner reservations, taking a long lunch when vital organs needed closer examination, etc. Bailey, when the autopsy did not reveal cause of death, left in a huff and talked to Chief Webber about her concerns, but she decided that there was nothing she could do and told Mary's waiting husband that the autopsy was inconclusive. Bailey afterward went into an empty hospital room and cried. She later confided to Mark that she felt the autopsy was sloppily done, that the removed organs should have not been allowed to just sit there, but should have been weighed, etc, right when they had been pulled out of the body. She hated the fact she was not able to tell Mary's husband the exact cause of her death so as to settle the husband's mind.
Chief Webber and resident Mark threw a very small going away party for Torres and Robbins. Torres seemed disappointed that it was so small, but decided that a small one was better than nothing at all.
With Doctor Grey at her side during the embolism heart pump insertion operation, Christina came through just fine, though self doubt still rode her mind. Afterward, Owen praised Christina for putting her fears aside and doing a great job.
When Torres and Robbins were walking through the airport, baggage at their sides, they began to quarrel once again about Torres staying in the USA. Torres said how much she loved Robbins and Robbins told her to stay, not come with her to Africa. Tears followed, but Torres stayed behind, watching Robbins board the airplane alone.
