The show opened with Doctor Grey giving a patient review presentation to full fledged doctors and residents alike.
A very distraught Torres, sick with grief at her partner and love interest, Arizona Robbins, going to Africa to continue her medical career with ill children, was blowing her nose when the phone rang. It was Mark on the other end, asking her if she knew what was going on with Christina Yang. Torres said she didn't have a clue, but that since she had the day off, that she would go over to Yang's new house and check up on her. Mark said that the whole staff was worried about Yang, not certain if she truly did want to give up her spot on the current medical program at the hospital. Torres cleaned herself up and headed over to Yang's place only to find Yang jumping up and down on the bed with loud music blasting from her headphones. Christina didn't want to talk about the hospital or the program, but would cut Torres' hair, if she wanted that. After some wild snips with a pair of scissors, Torres looked into a handy mirror and was shocked to see the mess Yang had made of her hair. A distracted Christina said that she wanted to buy some new furniture for her place and pulled out several credit cards. She told Torres that she might want to get a hair cut at the local mall, which Torres wholeheartedly agreed with. The women headed for the mall where Christina looked at some furniture, asking the furniture salesman if he had same day delivery. The man said they did and Christina said she wanted to buy the entire roomful of furniture, to have it delivered as soon as possible. Torres looked at Yang as if she had turned purple all over. Later, at the beauty shop, while Torres had her hair cut, Yang stared at a woman eating a large stuffed warm pretzel. Yang wondered aloud at what she might do with her life: would she just become a mall rat, what to do? She went and bought a pretzel.
Doctor Careff showed up at the pediatric wing of the hospital with a hang over which did not endear him to attending physician Doctor Stark who blandly told him that would not excuse him from rounds, but to get started right away. An obnoxious boy of about ten persistently fired ping pong balls from a plastic gun at Careff's head, making him angry. Doctor Stark told Careff to go attend a four month old girl with bilateral atresia, also known as liver failure. She, Lisa, was up for a liver transplant, but it would have to be a portion of an adult donor's liver, cut to size. Doctor Stark would operate on the baby, but Careff was to talk to the parents, which he did, telling them the pros and cons of the operation. They were both very fearful, asking many questions of the doctors, who reassured them that most likely the operation would go well. When the time came for the operation, Doctor Stark made a bit of a sloppy go of it, leaving the four attending residents including Careff to wonder if he had done it correctly, even going so far as to leave the wound open. When Careff questioned Stark about that, Stark said to just watch to see that the swelled liver would go down and he walked out. The residents looked at one another in dismay and took procedures as best they could to prevent infection.
Later, when the residents were chatting amongst themselves at lunch, Careff came up with the bright idea of using ping pong balls, such as the one that boy had fired at him, to put into the baby's belly to allow the liver to grow around and prevent infection, thus allowing the wound to be closed and be closely monitored. When Careff told Stark about his idea, Stark told him he was crazy, but later, when Stark decided to use that very idea on the baby, he passed it off as his own and took all the credit, which angered Careff, but let it slide. An upset April came to Careff with the news and when they groped each other in excitement, April had second thoughts, saying she was still a virgin, which angered Careff. He told her to go away, that he couldn't take care of everyone and she should know what she was getting herself into when approaching a man like that. She teared up as he tore out of the room, leaving her shocked.
A middle aged woman, Louise Cortez, was readmitted to the hospital needing a drain inserted into her pancreas, which would drain excess pancreatic fluid from her body. If not done, the fluids would begin to dissolve her inner organs, resulting in death. The operation was to be done by Doctor Bailey, who, when the time came, was called away to emergency surgery on a mystery patient and could not be there for Cortez. The surgery was done by Doctor Avery, who freaked out when a fistula found on Cortez's pancreas erupted, resulting in her death, and he vehemently told Bailey that it was not his fault, that he had done everything that he could have. Bailey agreed with him, told him not to worry, that he was a good doctor.
Meanwhile, Bailey and Webber were summoned into a separate wing of the hospital to attend an emergency operation of a very mysterious VIP patient. It turned out to be an Arabian ruler attended by a contingent of bodyguards, Arabic and American. He was escorted, unconscious, into surgery where open heart surgery was performed. He went into heart arrest on the table, defibrillated and was brought back to life by the doctors using the paddles. The bodyguards were very nervous and asked questions of the doctors once the patient was taken into the recovery room, but were reassured that he was doing well. After he recovered, but was still unconscious, he was whisked away by private helicopter to parts unknown. The staff seemed to heave a group sigh of relief once the mystery patient was off the premises.
Back at Christina Yang's house, Torres and Yang decided that Yang would throw a housewarming party that night and everyone on the resident list was invited. Torres did the honors by texting and calling all involved and as the potential guests received the invitations on their phones, they discussed as to whether they would bother to attend or not, and if they each had an obligation to do an intervention at the party to get or coax Yang back to the medical program. Some were positive that they should, others were not convinced it was worth the effort. Mark seemed adamant that they should, since Yang had saved his life with a necessary operation to remove a bullet in his chest just after the shootings at the hospital. Some of the others seemed to agree, but not sure if it was worth the effort since Yang seemed convinced that she did not want to be a doctor any more because of the stress involved.
At the party that night, everyone seemed to be having a good time, drinking, chatting, dancing, eating and admiring the new furniture that Yang had just purchased that day. April showed up crying, apologizing profusely to Owen that she had not brought them a housewarming party and collapsed in Avery's arms, telling him all about the incident that afternoon with Careff. When Careff showed up, he was punched in the mouth by Avery.
Most of the party attendees were wondering where Christina was, including her husband, Owen. She was not at her own party. She was upstairs on the roof, sipping wine with Shepherd. They were chatting about such mundane things as to what kind of floor she should have put down, what sort of bathroom tile, etc. When Shepherd tried gingerly to ask her if she was going to stick with the medical program, she ignored him and poured herself more wine. When she got up to go to the party, she thought of another question and sat down again, avoiding both the party and Shepherd's question. Not this time, she thought to herself, not just yet.
