Torres was readying herself for work at the hospital when a male friend knocked on her door and informed her that he was helping Arizona Robbins move her belongings into Torres' apartment. Torres, with a displeased expression on her face, stepped out into the hallway only to find Robbins surrounded by boxes and bags, sporting a happy smile. Robbins said that she was there to move in and to work things out with her former lover. Torres snapped back that she did not want to see Robbins and to get her crap out of her apartment immediately. Torres stated that Robbins was not trustworthy, was emotionally unstable and she wanted nothing to do with Robbins, so just get out! Torres turned on her heel, slamming the door in Robbins' face.
Christina Yang was in hospital garb, walking down a hospital corridor with Mark at her side, discussing how glad she was to be back. They walked into a conference room where Chief Webber was introducing first year medical students to the older residents. The students were to shadow the residents during the day and at shift's end, give Chief Webber their evaluations of their host doctors. The residents were not told of the pending evaluations until the end of the day, much to their later dismay. The students were assigned to their residents and sent on rounds with them immediately.
Webber mentioned to a few of the residents before they dispersed that the race for chief resident was on, to which the residents raised their eyebrows and exchanged knowing looks. Webber told Christina that since it had been a while since she had worked at the hospital, that he wanted her to go with him on his rounds, to which she looked pleased.
A previous patient, Henry Burton, was lying in bed in his hospital room when Christina and Webber walked through his door. Burton had previously been denied treatment for a tumor on his kidney because his insurance had run out, but Doctor Grey had taken pity on him and married him in order to qualify for medical treatment. It was not a conjugal marriage, merely legal. This arrangement had raised medical eyebrows throughout the hospital, but it was a done deal. Webber told Burton that he would be given a series of tests to determine just what treatments might help him to get better. He agreed and thanked the doctors for all the efforts being made on his behalf. He was given an MRI which showed he had a tumor on his kidney plus a large cyst on his pancreas, ready to rupture. He would need immediate surgery. Webber asked Grey to okay the surgery since Burton had listed her as his emergency contact and next of kin. Grey dithered about, not wanting to have responsibility for this, but in the end agreed to allow the surgery done. After surgery, Grey stood waiting beside Burton's bed for him to wake up. When he did wake, she gently scolded him for putting her in such a situation. He said that he knew he had done wrong, but what else could he have done? She understood and said that she would have to find him a support system because since such a large chunk of his pancreas had been removed due to the cyst, he might possibly be diabetic the rest of his life and besides, he would have to recover from this invasive but very necessary surgery and she did not think that she could provide it because she worked such impossible hours. He said that he understood once more and thanked her for her efforts, then closed his eyes and faded off.
A fifteen year old girl named Sarah Cassidy, accompanied by her parents, was assessed by Doctor Careff for possible bone surgery to her face. Her cheekbones were not growing properly and it was determined by Careff that skull pieces needed to be taken from Sarah's skull to be implanted in her cheekbones. Careff gave the risks and complications possible to the parents and the girl. The parents asked if further research could be made immediately about this surgery since it was rather new to which Careff said he would look into. Sarah told her parents that she was a tomboy at heart and resented having to confine herself to sedate activities. Her parents understood and agreed to the surgery pending further research. The doctors went into another room. A young male student was present during this consultation. Grabbing him, Careff turned him about and using black marker, made lines here, here and here, displaying where incisions needed to be made on Sarah's skull and face. The bewildered student, asking what was going on, was released by Careff. As his colleagues left, Careff muttered to the student that he was sorry, that he shouldn't have used permanent marker on his skin, then left the young man with mouth agape. The surgery was done very carefully by Careff with the first year students watching. It turned out to be a resounding success with Sarah pleased and full of hope for her future.
Doctors Owen and Torres were called in to attend a thirty two year old gay man, fresh from his wedding, named Brady, accompanied by his male partner, Kyle. Kyle had arranged for a team of horses to pull a hired carriage for the occasion, but the team had panicked and run over Brady. The man had suffered contusions and severe abrasions to his chest which necessitated immediate surgery. Kyle sobbed and apologized to his partner as he was taken into surgery and then told to leave the room. He very reluctantly went to the waiting room where he awaited news of the surgery. As Brady was lifted from the gurney to the operating table, he defibbed. A first year student saw the signs on the monitor and alerted the doctors to the fact to which they reacted instantly, saving Brady's life. They began the surgery and halfway through the procedure, Torres came out to tell Kyle that it looked good for Brady. Kyle told Torres how much he loved his partner and had just wanted a real marriage but had to settle for a domestic partnership. That set Torres to thinking about her relationship with Robbins, but she kept mum about it. She reassured Kyle once more and went back to the operating room. The surgery went well and Kyle was by Brady's side when he awoke.
Torres happened to walk by Robbins and they exchanged a few words, Robbins saying that she was not perfect and that she hoped that they could work it out. Torres just listened and walked away.
A bit later, a handsome male intern kissed Doctor Bailey and whispered in her ear that he had left her a dirty note on a patient's chart. She said that that was totally inappropriate to which he kissed her soundly again, told her to meet him later if interested and left her. She later told Grey about it and said that she might just take him up on his invitation. What did she have to lose?
At the end of the shift, the older interns gathered in Webber's office to hear what he had to say. He told them that the first year students had been secretly evaluating them to which they appeared shocked. Webber read the evaluations which did not favor the doctors, but it didn't seem to bother them much.
Torres grabbed an elevator, thinking she was alone, when Robbins ran inside and stood there with an appealing expression on her face. Robbins told her lover that she was here now, back again, planning to stay and try to work it out with Torres if only Torres would give her another chance. Would that be possible?
Could Torres possibly forgive her, please? Torres turned to face Robbins and said just listen...she stated that she was pregnant with Mark's baby and what could she do now? Robbins gaped at her.
