Arizona wakes up, bloodied and bruised, on her airbag. She sees Callie's
foot on the dash, and the rest of her is on the hood of the car. She
wasn't wearing her seat belt after she dove in the back seat to recover
her phone that Arizona tossed when she got sick of Mark texting her.
Callie's voice says that the brain is the most mysterious organ in the
human body. She wakes up, panicking but speechless, at the accident site
as her mind stands nearby. Her mind is completely dispassionate, and
maybe a bit quizzical. It looks as though Callie on the hood can
actually see herself standing nearby. Mind Callie sings "Nobody knows
where we might end up, nobody knows ..." to Callie on the hood, whose
eyes close.
Meredith arrives with news for Sloane. He's just wrapping up a
mandibular repair. What's she got?
The entire staff is waiting at the airlift site for Callie to arrive.
Car vs truck, that's all they got so far. The baby? They don't know yet.
He asks for a trauma gown, but Richard tells him he needs to sit this
one out. He refuses. That's Callie, and his baby. Richard says that's
exactly why. He won't hear Richard, and gowns up. Richard insists, and
Mark agrees. But he will be in the room, and Richard okays that.
The ambulance arrives, and Arizona jumps out, listing injuries. Callie
is taken out, and she's a horrible mess. Mind Callie watches from behind
Mark, singing "we do it all". Mark asks Arizona what the hell happened,
and she tells him the truck came out of nowhere, when she asked Callie
to marry her. Hunt tells Callie to stay with him. Hunt picks up the
theme with mind Callie, as the team goes to work.
Mark and Arizona are heartbroken, and looking for answers. Bailey takes
the next verse. She's checking the baby's pulse when she sees Callie's
hand, reaching and shaking. She takes it, and Callie's eyes close. They
need quiet while Fields finds a pulse. She does so, and Callie crashes.
They bring her back. Mind Callie sings as her body is taken to another
floor. Arizona murmurs outside the elevator "I asked her to marry me,
and a truck came out of nowhere."
In surgery Hunt orders everybody to take a breath, and stop rushing.
Lexie sings "Breathe" to Callie. Derek says somebody needs to check on
Mark, and Lexie goes. Bailey has bleeders everywhere, and they need to
get them under control. Callie starts contracting. Anybody who isn't
needed is ordered out of the OR. People are tripping over each other and
dropping things. Alex heads upstairs to talk to Arizona. Callie is
trying to recuperate. They need to pack her, and get out now, or she's
going to bleed to death. They'll send her up to the ICU and see if she
lives for the next 24 hours. Bailey says if she makes it, then they'll
go in again. Richard calls for a doctor to be with Callie nonstop.
Richard asks Fields what she's going to do if Callie delivers a pre-term
baby. Fields says she may be a little out of her depth, here.
Mark is sitting in the stairwell, in tears. Lexie finds him, and he
tells her she doesn't have to do this if she hates him. Karev asks
Arizona what she needs. He offers to sew up her forehead. She says she's
okay, and breaks down crying. Mark tells Lexie Callie is his best
friend, and she takes his hand.
Fields is embarrassed. Richard benched her. She's been benched. He's
bringing in the best, for Torres. Fields thinks it makes her look like a
complete idiot in front of her colleagues. Alex tells her to suck it up.
Her colleagues aren't thinking about her, they're thinking about Torres.
The specialist they brought in is Addison Montgomery-Shepherd.
April fills in Addison, who tells her to take a break, she's got it.
Fields thinks the baby could survive if they do a c-section now. Addison
disagrees, because not only did Fields not stop Callie's contractions,
but she didn't treat the baby with something to help mature her lungs.
So she can go, too.
Once she's gone, Addison apologizes to Callie and tells her they have
this. All the attendings are going to meet and come up with a plan, she
promises.
The attendings are fighting over how to treat Callie. She has a hole in
her heart, and nobody is in agreement how to proceed even just on this
one point, never mind the rest of her injuries. Hunt yells at everybody
to calm down and sings "Turn Me Inside Out" the group to order. They
close the door, and out in the hall Yang, Karev and Grey discuss the
baby shower. Meredith takes it back. Cristina can be the baby's
godmother. Karev points out that there might not be a baby to godmother.
The only way to save the baby is to save Callie, and the only way to
save Callie might end up killing the baby. On another note, Meredith
points out that Karev has a hickey on his neck. Yang teases him. "You in
love, you love her? You love her?" Karev points out that she works here,
so surely something horrible will happen in no time. Don't get your
hopes up for Karev's big 'happily ever after.'
Arizona asks Bailey if Callie would have a better chance if they
delivered the baby now. Bailey says that Callie's cardiovascular status
could possibly be greatly improved with the baby delivered, but they
want to know - Mark mutters "what we want to do" and Arizona says no.
What Callie would want us to do. Arizona and Mark start squabbling over
if Callie wants a baby, or if Callie wants to live. The baby, in Mark's
estimation, shouldn't even factor into the discussion. Bailey sings over
Arizona and Mark's argument. She closes the door so Callie can't hear
them fight.
Lexie asks Jackson if they have a plan. Torres goes back in surgery
tomorrow. It is as yet undetermined if they intend to deliver the baby
first. They're waiting for Robbins and Sloan to decide. He asks if she
wants to go home or sleep here, and she doesn't know. He gets it. It's
Mark's kid. Cristina goes over the x-rays and test results while
Meredith tries to convince Derek to come lay down so they can be
refreshed for whatever comes next. He's very worried about what shape
her brain is going to be in, when all is said and done. Even if they
manage to fix her body, her brain might not come back. Mark was standing
there. Meredith says he has to tell him, but Derek says he can't. She
convinces him to lay down.
Arizona and Mark continue their fight. A baby born at 23 weeks is at
risk for a lot of issues. Mark knows the risks. Arizona claims Mark is
nothing but a sperm donor, since she's with Callie. Mark tells her he's
the father. He is. She's not anything. She's nothing. This is his family.
Cristina concentrates. Her eyes fly open, and she whispers "wait."
Everything reverses at high speed to Callie getting the text from Mark,
when he found out Lexie is with Jackson. But from that point, everything
unfolds differently. For one thing, they're driving in the clouds. And
instead of Arizona taking the phone and throwing it in back, Callie does
it herself. It promptly beeps again, and Callie reaches in back, but she
stops and recounts what's about to happen. In a few seconds, Arizona is
going to ask her to marry her. She doesn't answer, and then they're hit
by a truck. Arizona says then she should put on her seat belt. She
doesn't answer, because she doesn't know. Arizona repeats the request
that Callie put on her seat belt.
The phone sounds off from the backseat again. Callie muses about if this
is what love feels like. Other people can do it, she starts listing all
the couple she knows. She wants that. "Put your seat belt ON." She says
I love you, and starts singing to Arizona. Eli picks it up and starts
singing to Miranda, and Hunt to Cristina. Henry joins in to Teddy, and
Karev to Fields. Miranda sings to Eli "Hey just get over yourself, this
ain't too good for your health" followed by the rest of the women in the
couples. Lexie sings to Mark, who is asleep on her lap. Meredith sings
to Derek, as well.
At the crash site, Derek talks to Callie who is now back on the hood of
the car. He knows she's in pain, but they're going to make some
necessary adjustments. He tells her not to fight the intubation, and
asks her to follow his finger with her eyes. Meredith asks her to
squeeze her hand. Okay. At least move one finger? No. Okay. They fill
Arizona and Mark in on Callie's non-responsiveness. Mark asks for
anything else, and Derek hesitates, but Meredith says no.
Cristina tells Hunt and Altman about her brainstorm. She shows them
patients who came in with stab wounds to the chest, both presented after
their initial surgeries with DOE. Both were fixed percutaneously, which
drastically reduces the amount of Heparin needed, so they could avoid
the brain re-bleeding, and they won't need hypothermia, so the baby has
a better chance. Teddy promptly blows her off because Callie had blunt
trauma. Cristina found cases where it worked in blunt trauma. Cristina
counters that Dr. Burke uses a technique that doesn't require a loop.
Cristina remains excited, and Teddy remains skeptical. It's up to Hunt.
Cristina overcomes all her objections, and announces that it's genius.
Teddy says no. It's too risky in this case. Cristina doesn't get it. She
has done the surgery herself. If Teddy is unfamiliar with the technique,
Cristina can show her operative reports. Teddy declares the discussion over.
Cristina asks Owen, and Teddy reacts in anger. Cristina's husband is not
the head of cardio, Teddy is. Cristina says she's not asking her
husband, she's acting the head of Callie's case. He sides with Teddy,
and Cristina takes her charts and leaves.
Arizona talks to Callie. Mark is right. She's nothing. Legally-speaking,
anyway. She feels like her wife, though. She feels like the baby's mom.
She asks Callie to live, for her. Callie sings to her, and Arizona joins
in.
Callie's pressure starts bottoming out. Addison says her belly is tight
as a drum. Her lungs are full of fluid, and she's bleeding out. They
need an OR, Callie's going in.
Callie sings "Grace" "I don't know how I'll get through this." The team
scrubs in. Mark and Arizona sit down to wait. She says they should say a
prayer. Callie would want them to. Mark tells her he hasn't stopped
praying since yesterday.
Almost the minute they start surgery, there's bleeding. Cristina goes to
bat for her procedure again, and Teddy overrides her. Hunt backs her
this time. They tried Teddy's way, and it's not working. Teddy won't
back down until Richard orders her to, and then it's still several
seconds. Cristina goes to work. They sing a song about disagreement,
"and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known how to save
a life." Cristina's procedure works, but she's bleeding and they're
losing her. Addison gives Richard one minute of heart massage, and then
she's taking the baby.
Mark dashes downstairs, the baby is here. Callie is still in serious
danger. The baby is so, so tiny. They intubate it. They get a heart
beat. Callie's heart is strong as well. Now they just need to wait for
her to wake up. Derek walks away, and Mark says to Arizona "You're not
nothing." They have a kid together. Robbins is a mom, and Sloan is a
dad. He apologizes, and Arizona tells him Callie will wake up. She has to.
Derek stops the elevator so Meredith can vent. Yesterday at the baby
shower, she was jealous of Callie, because she got pregnant without
trying. They have to try. She gets shots, she takes her temperature, she
puts her legs in the air, and nothing. The universe says "Screw you,
Meredith!" and gives Callie a kid - and then puts Callie through a
windshield. What the hell is going on? What's the point. The universe is
screwed up, and random and mean. Derek holds her. He promises they will
have a baby.
Arizona fills Callie in. The baby is one pound, one ounce and has
beautiful black hair. Callie can hear her, but doesn't respond. Callie
sings "The Story." Mark sits at his daughter's incubator. Jackson tells
Lexie he's not the guy who waits around for the girl who's in love with
someone else.
Dr. Alton tells Cristina she can't teach her anymore. If she can't
listen, if she can't learn, then she needs to find someone else to learn
from.
Callie tries to get through to the body in the bed. When she grabs
Callie's ankles, Callie opens her eyes. She grunts, and Arizona picks up
her head. Callie says yes. She'll marry her. Yes.
