Over dinner, Derek happily rambles on about the clinical trials. Karev
stares at Meredith, who he saw leaving a room she had no business in,
that does have something to do with the trials. At the rehearsal dinner,
Mark gives a toast, while Arizona's dad reacts unkindly. Her mom orders
him to calm down. Callie realizes they forgot to say grace and despite
the fact most of them are already eating, they pause and say grace.
Except Mark, who continues eating. The baby cries, and Callie excuses
herself. She returns, bearing the baby. Barbara leaps out of her seat to
get some baby face time with her daughter Arizona's new baby. Callie's
mom, on the other hand, refuses to stop eating so she can hold her.
Mark, Callie, and Arizona all register and react, without words.
Karev has single-handedly leaped to the front of the chief resident line
with his "sick children from Africa" campaign. Between that and Yang
getting benched, the playing field has been leveled. Richard asks them
all to keep it down.
The surgeons go to work on the various visitors from Africa. Teddy looks
at a young male patient's chest, where his heart can be seen beating
through the skin. Cristina immediately approaches her husband and asks
him to go to bat for her with Teddy. He refuses, and advises her to
apologize.
Stark, Hunt and April are with a girl. April learned some Swahili to try
to help facilitate communication. Stark takes a shot at her for trying
to learn a new language, saying she should spend more time doing her job.
Cristina apologizes to Teddy, who asks if she means it, or if she's
trying to get back on her service. Christine asks it it matters. Wrong
answer. Teddy walks out.
The family is planning the hours leading up to and including the
ceremony. Arizona needs to get back to the hospital but wants to know
why no moment of silence was incorporated, as requested. Her father says
they ran out of time. She needs it for her brother. It would take all of
two minutes. Her mom intervenes. Mark joins them, and both the fathers
have a reaction to his presence.
Both fathers will be walking their respective daughters down the aisle.
Callie tries to hand off Sofia again, and her mother takes a pass. Her
dad takes him.
Avery and Lexie talk about his study. Until he gets FDA approval, he'll
be working on rodents. She talks to him about Teddy's case. Teddy,
meanwhile, asks Hunt to give her 20 good reasons not to let Cristina
back on her service, since she's ready to buckle. Hunt goes to bat for
his wife. Teddy points out that Cristina got lucky, in Callie's surgery.
It could just as easily have gone south. Hunt tells her to tell
Cristina, but Teddy doesn't believe she will be heard.
Alex fills Derek in on Zola, the African baby with spinal bifida.
Meredith arrives bearing notes on the next group of Alzheimer's patients
for the FDA trial. Derek excuses himself, and Karev confronts her. He
knows what she did with the clinical trial envelope, he saw her hiding
it under her lap coat. Does Derek know? She becomes increasingly
defensive, but Karev won't back down.
April has words with Stark. He blows her off about her African patient,
and she's had enough of his attitude. He promised that he'd treat her
like every other resident, that it wouldn't be weird between them. He
assures her that he is treating all the other residents just as badly.
She gets a 911 beep on the patient in question. When they arrive, the
patient vomits blood.
Callie and Arizona regroup for comfort. It's just two more days. They
can survive two more days, and then they'll have the wedding and it will
be done.
In surgery, the African girl is shown to have intestinal tuberculosis,
per Dr. Hunt. April knows what to do, and Hunt backs her.
Derek chats up Meredith in relation to the alzheimer's trial. Karev
looks upset, but says nothing.
Arizona and Teddy touch base about the wedding. Teddy gets beeped, and
Arizona wonders if it's hotty husband, or hotty boyfriend. And does
hotty boyfriend know there IS a hotty husband? Teddy doesn't think it's
any big. He's just a date.
Averya discovers one of his rodents has passed on.
Callie had a veil made to look like her mother's. Her mom acts as weird
as she has the entire visit, and Callie finally calls her on it. She
admits she's angry about both the baby being born out of wedlock and her
daughter marrying a woman. Callie doesn't get it. Her mom isn't some
backwoods moron, she's an attorney, out in the world. Her secretary is
gay. That's not enough to stop her from retreating to believing she
won't see Callie in heaven, because of the decisions she's making.
Callie's not a bride, and she's not the mother of a bride. She refuses
to stay for the ceremony.
Arizona finds one of the patients sitting outside his brother's room.
He's grieving at the thought of losing him. That's his only brother (the
one with the heart you can see beating outside his chest).
Stark finds April in the kitchen. She's been ignoring all her pages, and
he's concerned about her. Yes, she was exposed to HIV+ blood, but she's
a doctor, and she knows the proper protocol. She's making food for her
patient that she should be able to eat, since it's from her country.
Callie's dad tells her that he's very sorry about her mom. Callie
insists he leave, because she doesn't want to cry in front of him. She
finally gets through to him, and he leaves with her mother.
Karev refuses to speak to Meredith until she admits that she switched
Adele so she would not get the placebo. Things get tense just as Derek
arrives. Karev says he's late for work.
Mark arrives. Callie jokes about needing something borrowed, as she
already has old, new and blue (Cash?) The father's wife was in an
accident, so he won't be able to perform the wedding. Mark was given
some numbers to get a replacement, but Callie's had enough. Forget it.
She's not getting married.
Avery tells Richard about his dead rodent. He did an x-ray and a CT on
the mouse, but when it didn't turn up anything, he did an MRI. The
device works, it's just in the wrong place. They need to relocate it.
Derek paged Meredith so he could introduce her to Zola. Neuro exam is
good. He wants to know if she wants to adopt Zola. He's serious. He
thinks she's supposed to be with them.
Bailey visits Callie. She says there are too many roadblocks. Bailey
talks some sense into her. Where do you think God is? He's in them. So
where they get married doesn't matter. A marriage is what you decide it
is, and that's all that matters. Bailey laughs at herself. She got
married, to a man, in a church. Look how well that turned out.
Teddy, Grey (Lexie) and Yang work on the boy with the heart defect.
Cristina is impressed, since Teddy is going in blind. She tells Lexie
she can tie off when they finish. Bailey waves at Mark through the
window to give him the high sign that all is well.
Hunt says that April made a hell of a save with her surgery. Stark puts
in a good word for her for chief resident. It's a glowing
recommendation, and Hunt thanks him for the feedback.
Richard thanks Avery for his help with the project.
Mark arrives to pick up Arizona. Now it's her turn to be a wreck. She
misses her brother. She says her dad schedules every minute of every
day, and this is why. So he won't have time to miss his son. She wants a
minute to miss her brother. Mark holds her.
Derek and Meredith go over all the paperwork involved in adoption. She's
overwhelmed. Derek promises they'll get through it. There's one thing
they can do right now. Meredith says she doesn't want to, but Derek says
it's for the baby. So they head for the courthouse, to get married.
Bailey heads up front to officiate at the ceremony. Arizona's dad walks
her up the aisle. Mark walks Callie up. The brides are beautiful. Derek
and Meredith get married at the same time as Callie and Arizona. Both
couples grin from ear-to-ear.
April dashes up front to take a "first dance" photo of Callie and
Arizona. Hunt asks Cristina if she spoke to Teddy, and Karev joins them
to say his date got stuck delivering a baby. He stops Hunt from
drinking, since he has him scheduled for surgery first thing in the
morning. Richard asks Cristina when they're cutting the cake, since he
wants to take a piece home to Adele. He always thought Cristina would be
the first choice for chief resident.
Teddy goes by, and Cristina reams her a new one. She insults her up one
side, and down the other. It's a backwards apology. She's sorry Teddy is
so weak that she can't stand the competition, etc. Teddy just says "And
yet? You still don't get it" before she walks away.
Her date tells her he has a job opportunity in Germany, and he accepted
it contingent on her joining him. He wants to settle down, and start a
life with someone. He hopes that someone is her.
It's time for the father/daughter dance. Mark stands in for her dad.
Meredith wants to go to the reception, but Derek doesn't want to give up
baby face time. Callie's dad comes back and joins her. Derek dances
with (hopefully) his baby girl.
