The show opens with Teddy's husband, Henry, sitting up in a hospital bed coughing up blood in gouts. Doctors are milling about him, taking tests, monitoring his vital signs, a very
anxious Teddy at his side. She is talking to Doctor Webber about CT scans to which Webber agrees, also suggesting that Teddy go along with Henry to encourage and stabilize him
emotionally. Henry apologizes to her a little later for being ill again and repeats his good intention to attend medical school when he is able to. Teddy encourages him to do just that but
also asks him to be real and understand that he may possibly have a tumor once more. Henry has had serious tumor concerns in the past that almost killed him and Teddy wants him
to know that it may have recurred again. She tells Henry that the CT machine is being prepared for a scan for him to possibly diagnose another tumor, which news makes him very unhappy
but resigned to the fact.
A young woman, Laura Lewis, is sitting in a wheelchair going through the process of handling paperwork prior to being released. She is recovering from a recent spinal fusion operation in which
screws were placed in her spine to correct scoliosis. Her young son, Drew, is asking his mommy how she feels and his father is concerned because she has a very painful expression on her face. Suddenly Laura leans forward, crying out in pain, her husband trying his best to help her. He yells loudly for help and staff comes running. They see no possible present cause for the pain and quickly put Laura
on a gurney and rush her into an examining room. X-rays are decided upon to find out just what may be causing the problem.
Janet has told Meredith Grey that the hearing for baby Zola has been canceled, to Meredith's great disappointment. When Meredith asks if there is a chance another hearing might be scheduled in
the near future, Janet tells her to move on, to get on with her life. Unhappy, Meredith confides in Christina about the canceled hearing and says that she doesn't want to try to adopt again or have any more children.
Christina tries her best to encourage Meredith, but she seems set in her thinking. Christina tells Avery about this who feels that he is responsible for the canceled hearing because he pushed Meredith to
try to adopt.
Chief Webber is in the x-ray room where the CT machine is being prepped prior to x-raying Henry. Webber once more calms Teddy down, telling her that this will show what may be causing Henry's bleeding. She asks him to watch Henry while she leaves to make an important phone call. Once the x-rays are finished, a tumor is showing on them. Webber tells Teddy that he feels the new laser should be used
to excise the tumor which is in a very critical spot in Henry's anatomy and he has never used this laser, so he bows out. He racks his brains for an experienced doctor with Teddy's help and together they
decide upon Christina Yang. They both know that Christina is a nervous person and would be very nervous if she knew she was operating on Teddy's Henry, so they decide to mask Henry under
sedation and try to convince Yang to do the operation that way. Finally, Yang agrees and suits up for the operation. There is some bleeding which blocks Yang's view for a bit, some clots, but use of the laser
is able to get them out of the way. The operation is a success and done within the guesstimated time Yang thought it would take. She is very pleased with herself and rightly so because it saves Henry's life
for which Teddy is very grateful.
Meredith and Alex are called to transport a newborn baby from a hospital some distance away. There is a terrible storm brewing with lightning lighting up the sky. They take an ambulance to
the hospital and while there, have trouble locating a small enough catheter to inflate the baby's tiny lungs. The infant has serious pneumonia and is put on a breathing machine once its lungs
are inflated. Once the incubator is placed securely within the ambulance, they set off for their own hospital in the pouring rain.
Laura Lewis is on the operating table, the doctors poking about in her heart because it stopped while on the operating table. Doctor Bailey finds a screw that came loose from Laura's previous
spinal fusion operation, has lodged in her heart and every time it beats, it jabs her heart, causing great pain. Bailey scolds the doctor who did the operation and removes the screw, closes the incision and the patient is taken to the recovery room.
In the distant ambulance, its engine sputters and fails, then stops altogether, leaving them stranded in the storm, on the dark road, in the middle of nowhere. Alex phones the hospital and informs them of the problem. The staff says that they should leave the ambulance. The doors to the ambulance are opened by the drenched driver, who tells the two doctors that he is putting out warning cones, that he
will head back about a half mile to a store he saw on the route. Meredith protests loudly that they don't want to take the baby out in the storm, but the driver insists they get out, leaving the incubator inside. Well, what if we get hit, Meredith asks? Get out anyway, he says, and just watch for someone coming. The driver takes off at a run and the doctors phone the hospital again, asking what they should do.
Staff there advises them to get out of the ambulance and wait roadside for help. Arguing back and forth, Meredith and Alex feel something hit the ambulance with a terrific force. They are not hurt seriously and climb out to see bodies strewn over the road and a mangled vehicle lying on its' side. What next?
