On the morning of her first day as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, Meredith Grey is running late as she recovers from a one-night stand and prepares for her first day. Meredith quickly befriends George O'Malley, who's quirky, yet lovable, Cristina Yang, a highly competitive woman, and Izzie Stevens, a model turned surgical intern. Each of the new interns get assigned to Dr. Miranda Bailey, who past interns have dubbed "the Nazi".
Meredith's first patient, a young beauty pageant contestant, recently began having severe, life-threatening seizures and Meredith uncovers that she'll need brain surgery to save her life. However, things take a turn when the neurosurgeon, Dr. Derek Shepard, happens to be Meredith's one-night stand. He wants their brief relationship to progress into something more, but Meredith is firm on her stance - their relationship should remain strictly professional.

| Meredith: I can't think of a single reason why I should be a surgeon, but I can think of a thousand reasons why I should quit. They make it hard on purpose. There are lives in our hands. There comes a moment when it's more than just a game, and you either take that step forward or turn around and walk away. I could quit but here's the thing, I love the playing field.
| Burke: The only person that can keep a promise so big is God, and I haven't seen him pick up a scalpel lately.
| Cristina: (about George) Total 007.
Izzie: 007? What's 007?
Meredith: Licensed to kill.
| Dr. Bailey: (to new interns) Don't bother suckin' up to me. I already hate you. That's not gonna change.
| Meredith: I'm going to go upstairs and take a shower. When I came back, you'll be gone right?
| Meredith: Did you let me scrub in for this operation because I slept with you?
Derek: Yes... Just kidding.

| In the scene where the helicopter is landing, you can see a logo for KOMO 4 on the side of the building that is supposedly the hospital. KOMO 4 is the local ABC news station that was used for the helicoptor scene, but the logo wasn't covered up.
| Near the beginning of the episode, Dr. Bailey shows four pagers to Meredith, George, Cristina, and Izzie. George is the last one to pick up a pager, but when he gets it off of the table there are two pagers left.
| While on the roof preparing for the helicopter's arrival, Izzie is not wearing glasses. But in the next shot she has glasses on, and then they once again disappear in the subsequent shot.
