|In the critically acclaimed first season of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith Grey, the daughter of world-renowned surgeon Ellis Grey, begins her job as an intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. There she meets fellow interns Cristina Yang, Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, George O'Malley, and Alex Karev, four individuals that will bond together as they deal with the stress and life-and-death situations that come with their job as surgical interns. The interns are lead by Dr. Miranda Bailey, who is nicknamed "The Nazi", and resident surgeons Dr. Derek Shepherd and Dr. Preston Burke. The chief of surgery, Dr. Richard Webber, who was once close to Meredith's mother, lends a guiding hand to both the first year interns and his resident surgeons. |
As the first season unfolds, Meredith struggles to draw the line between a working relationship and intimate relationship with Derek after she has a one-night stand with him the night before the start of her internship. George quickly falls for Meredith, but hesitates to tell her his true feelings. Cristina and Burke slowly form a relationship, but agree to hide it from their friends and co-workers. Away from the hospital, Meredith has to deal with the stress of keeping her mother's Alzheimer's disease a secret from her mother's colleagues. The season ends in a cliff-hanger when Derek's estranged wife, whom Meredith did not know about, arrives in Seattle.
