Following controversy surrounding Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) and an altercation with T. R. Knight (George O'Malley) over his sexuality in October of 2006, Washington's contract with the series was not renewed. It was announced on June 7, 2007 by ABC that his character was dropped from the show.

Every episode title, with the exception of season 1's "The Self-Destruct Button", comes from the title of a song.

Season 1 was originally set to be 13 episodes long instead of the 8 that originally aired as season 1. Though 13 were filmed, the remaining 5 episodes were moved to season 2.

Fisher Plaza, home to Seattle's KOMO-TV, is the building used for exterior shots of Seattle Grace due to its location, which is close to the Space Needle and Seattle high-rise buildings. Interior scenes are filmed at VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in North Hills, California. Exterior shots of Meredith's home are of an actual Seattle home, but the interior scenes are shot on a set.
