Actors Charles Matthews and Victoria Vestris are performing
The Tragedy of Othello in San Francisco as Paladin applauds from his personal booth. He sends them flowers and they look up to acknowledge his gift and his invitation to dinner. Over supper, they thank him for making their stay in San Francisco so pleasant. They inform him that they're heading for San Diego for its annual Round-Up, where they've been invited to play some scenes while the rest of their company heads east. Paladin warns that San Diego is a dangerous place but the actors are more amused than frightened. They insist that all audiences are receptive to Shakespeare and invite him to catch one of their shows. Once they leave, Paladin checks the advertisement for the actors' San Diego performance and sends his card to their manager, Lucien Bellingham...

Episode Quotes
Paladin: Hello, Ben.
Ben Jackson: Paladin. Nobody gun you down yet?
Paladin: They keep trying.
Ben Jackson: Good luck to them.
Paladin: Thank you.
Ben Jackson: I don't expect much trouble.
Lucien Bellingham: Now, now that's the way I like to hear you fellows talk. No trouble, we all just have a rip-roarin' time, and then settle it kind of peaceable-like. That's Mr. Paladin's job here--kind of a, a spreader of, of, of sweetness and, and peace.
(after hearing the manager wants a real-life gunfight show)
Paladin: Mr. Bellingham, you are a showman.
Lucien Bellingham: Yeah, it'd be an attraction folks'd talk about around here for years.
Paladin: And only one performance.
Lucien Bellingham: That's right, only--only one. That would be kind of a drawback, wouldn't
Lucien Bellingham: Now, look, you're into me $500. I'll make it $1,000 if they stay in town and do the show tonight.
Paladin: I can try.
Lucien Bellingham: And remember, my establishment has to remain in one piece.
Paladin: Well, that could happen.
Lucien Bellingham: And I've gotta be here, too. And alive, besides.
Charles Mathews: When he began issuing orders in that tone of voice. I came close to striking him, if you hadn't held my arm.
Victoria Vestris: I did?
Charles Mathews: Yes.
Paladin: This is not a theatrical costume I am wearing. This isn't a toy, it's a gun. There are six bullets in it. Possibly six lives. And it's part of my working gear.
Ben Jackson: How much you paying?
Lucien Bellingham: Oh, roughly $100. (Jackson glares) Uh, roughly. Smooth it out, it's more like $500. That's it, $500. Uh... $1,000.
Ben Jackson: Then that's what I'm getting.
Lucien Bellingham: Now, wait a minute, Mr. Jackson. You gotta let a man put by a little money for his old age.
Ben Jackson: Maybe you won't need it. I'll take the job.
(Paladin gives the actor a gun)
Charles Mathews: What do I do with it? I'm--I'm not familiar with a gun.
Victoria Vestris: He's very good with a sword.
Charles Mathews: Yes.
Paladin: There's nothing to it. Just close your eyes and squeeze. In a crowd like this, you're bound to hit a few.
Paladin: Ben, you'd better ask the lady's husband about this.
Ben Jackson: Husband?
Victoria Vestris: Of course he's my husband. What sort of woman did you take me for?
Ben Jackson: Well how come you got different names?
Victoria Vestris: We're actors, not people.
