At the Carlton, Paladin is in his room cleaning his gun when Hey Boy comes in with his meal. A man, Mr. Warren, barges in and Paladin reminds him that he's warned him before not to harass Hey Boy or try to offer him money. Warren explains that he wants to hire Paladin to protect Aaron Bell from him. Aaron has been out of prison for a week and already bought a gun and horse. Warren figures that Aaron plans to kill him or one of his fellow townspeople in Lime Creek. Paladin notes that Warren's town hung Aaron's brother Paul eight years ago for fighting on the opposite side of the Civil War. Frazier: There were a lot of hands on the rope that night.
