At the Hotel Carlton, Paladin comes down to the lobby and the clerk gives him a telegram. Upon reading it, Paladin tells the clerk to have the clerk cancel his dinner for two. The gunfighter then rides out to the town of Bonanza. Paladin arrives at night and finds the town seemingly abandoned. The only light on is at the saloon, Jacks, and Paladin goes inside. Elmer Jansen: It was pretty dangerous, though, Bonanza in the old days. I collected the first tax that was ever collected, with my hat in one hand, gun in the other.
Elmer Jansen: Well, where is it?
Paladin: Where is what?
Rafe Adams: You know what.
Elmer Jansen: You better come downstairs.
Paladin: Well--now, first, you're gonna have to explain to me.
Elmer Jansen: You're gonna have to come down or we'll have to take ya.
Paladin: Mr. Jansen, I have a gun here.
Elmer Jansen: It don't matter.
Paladin: It don't?
Paladin: Well, it's going to be a unique experience, anyway, being run out of a town for discovering a man was taking his own property.
Armand Boucher: You're out of your mind. I'm offering you wealth and immortality.
