Paladin is riding back to San Francisco and spots a sign for Crescent City ahead. He rides into town just as several townspeople scream and run as a man, Doggie Kramer, steps out. Kramer steps out onto the street and faces off against another man. Paladin ties up his horse and notices that the curb strap is broken.
