Ball and Chain - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Dave and Vince Teagues are fishing on the dock when they hook their line on a dinghy. They pull it in and discover an aged corpse beneath a tarp. Nathan and Audrey are called in and discover the man is extremely old. When they learn the body was found under the tarp, they figure somebody put it there. Dave and Vince explain that the corpse has aged even since they found it. Dave shows them a sketch he did of the body proving their claim. As Nathan talks to the officer on the scene, Audrey asks them about Lucy, the woman who looks like her. They don't remember a name attached to the photo, but promise to look into it. There's no ID on the body, but there are lobsters in the boat that are least three days' dead. The harbor mistress, Beatrice Mitchell, comes by and shows off her newly adopted baby, Benny. Nathan coos over it and asks to hold it. Beatrice says that the boat was stolen from the Camden harbor. Nathan reluctantly returns Benny to his mother and Audrey notices a tattoo on the corpse. Audrey goes to see Duke at his new bar and invites Nathan along, but he refuses to go.

That Friday night, Duke is holding a grand opening for his new bar and restaurant, the Grey Gull, and Audrey tries to find someone who can identify the body from a photograph. She finally offers free drinks and Duke doubles her offer. He then offers her a drink and suggests she have dinner with him the next Friday so she can do something other than work for just one night. Audrey figures he'll cancel, but Duke bets her that she'll cancel first and she agrees. She then talks to the bartender, Nora, and they notice a local, Joe Campbell, kissing a tourist in a booth.

A few days later, Nathan and Audrey check out the remaining tattoo parlor. The owner confirms he designed the tattoo, but never put it on an old man. He admits that someone could have stolen the design, and that the man got it decades ago, before he designed it. Next, the officers talk to the town EMT and coroner, Eleanor, while she practices tennis. She informs them the man died of old age, and he's decomposing far faster than possible. The tox screen was clean and nothing accounts for the rapid aging, but he was aging even before he died. An old man staggers onto the court and is hit by a tennis ball. He collapses, dead, and the ID reveals he's Joe Campbell from the bar, now almost a hundred years old.

Nathan and Audrey confirm that Campbell died the same way as the man in the boat. They go to talk to Duke and see if he can identify the woman at the bar. He doesn't know who she is, but Nora tells them that the woman's name was Heather. Nathan suggests they have Dave do a sketch based on Audrey's description. Nathan confirms that Joe Campbell was picked up for poaching out of Portland, and they figure Heather had issues with poachers. They take the sketch to Beatrice, who says she doesn't know anyone who looks like that. Beatrice's nanny, Abby, comes in with Benny. Abby is an old family friend and Beatrice is leaving on maternity leave. Once the officers leave, Beatrice warns Abby that the police know about Heather, but not when she's coming back to Haven.

Outside, Nathan gets a call that a man matching the dead man's description, Phil Reiser, and a second unidentified man bought the boat in Camden. The two men have a special engine on order for pickup on Friday, so the officers watch the boat shop. As they wait, Duke calls Audrey and she admits she has to cancel. Campbell's partner, James Wardel, arrives and they arrest him. At the station, James identifies Heather from when she was at the bar with Phil. Phil started aging afterward and James couldn't take him to the hospital because he had outstanding warrants. Phil died and James put him into the boat. When James confirms that Phil died two weeks ago that Friday, they realize that it's the third Friday and Heather will strike again.

At the Grey Gull, Duke is drinking when a woman joins him for dinner: Heather.

The next morning, Duke wakes up alone on his boat. He slowly dresses for the day and goes out, and Abby and Beatrice walk by. They say that they're looking for a friend. Meanwhile, Nathan and Audrey check state records and discovered that a man died of accelerated old age in Derry in 1954, A woman named Alexandra Leidner found the body, but she died in childbirth in 1954, one week after the man died. Duke keeps calling Audrey and she finally takes the call, and he tells her that Heather was at the Grey Gull on Friday. The officers go to see Duke and discover that he's aged a dozen years. Audrey realizes that he linked up with Heather and slept with her, and the other men she's slept with have died of old age. Duke explains that she seemingly hypnotized him. Nathan wants to get him to a hospital but Duke figures they can't do anything and he's better off sticking with the officers. When they ask if he's seen anything extraordinary, he tells them about Beatrice and Audrey remembers that she was supposed to be gone on maternity leave. They figure Beatrice and Abby are looking for Heather and go to see her at her home.

At the house, they find Abby preparing to leave. They come in and find several baby cribs and the dresses that Helena was wearing. Abby warns that they can't stop Helena, Nathan spots Beatrice's certificate and realizes her maiden name is Leidner, and Abby admits that Beatrice is Alexandra's granddaughter. Audrey realizes that Beatrice is Helena, and Abby explains that Beatrice goes to the lighthouse when it's her time. They go to the lighthouse and break in, and find Beatrice pregnant and two babies less than a week old. Audrey realizes that the babies are draining the men's life. Beatrice apologizes, and admits that she can't control what Helena does. Nathan figures they have to stop Beatrice from delivering, but her water breaks and Abby takes over.

Outside, the now elderly Duke admits to Nathan that he didn't today would be the day he died. Meanwhile, Audrey works with Beatrice and tries to figure out a way to save Duke. Beatrice explains that she ran into her ex-husband, who had a new family. She lost a baby, which brought on their divorce. Beatrice went to bed and transformed into Heather, and then woke up pregnant the next day. When she saw Phil at the docks, she recognized the tattoo and realized the man. Abby warns that she can't stop the process, and Alexandra died in childbirth.

Duke wonders if Nathan hits him, and Nathan tries to reassure him.

Abby admits that a father has never survived childbirth in the Leidner family. Audrey goes back over the deaths and realizes that Joe Campbell died a day later. Beatrice explains that the baby needed to be under a warmer for a day, and she didn't hold the child until a day later. Outside, Duke arrests and Nathan tries to revive him.

After Beatrice delivers, Audrey takes the baby outside. It makes Duke worse, and they realize they have to keep them separate.

After the separation, Duke recovers but doesn't remember anything of what happened. They arrange an adoption and Audrey takes a picture,

Later, Audrey meets the recovered Duke at the Grey Gull. She tells him that Jean is his baby and he's shocked to hear that he has a daughter. Audrey shows him the picture she took and warns him that he can never see her because the baby was the source of his aging. She explains that she took the picture for Jean because she doesn't have any pictures of the first day she was in the world. Duke walks away, trying to appear unaffected. He sees Nathan pull up outside and they look at each other for a moment, and then Nathan turns and leaves.

At the lighthouse, Abby and Beatrice tend to the two remaining babies. Beatrice then transforms into Heather again and goes out onto the lighthouse balcony, and looks out at Haven.
