Audrey is walking along the Haven beach, considering what she's learned about herself and Lucy.
Elsewhere, Ex-convict Max Hansen arrives in Haven.
Audrey sits at the site of the Colorado Kid murder and wonders if God has anything left to send her. Max comes up behind her and assures her that she'll be able to handle it, and he's been in the same situation. He assures her that he's been in similar situations, and admits that he's been in Haven before. Max wishes her luck and leaves.
Next, Max goes to the paper to see Dave Teagues, who knows who he is. Max explains that he's been in prison since 1985, and Dave wonders what he wants. Max tells him he wants a job, and overrides Dave's objections. However, he tells Dave that he'll need a week or two wrap some things up first.
Chief Wournos is eating at the Grey Gull when Max comes in to see him. Wournos knows who he is, and Max notes that he was lucky to get out after Garland's testimony. Garland tells him out of Maine, but Max says he has some things to take care of. He tells the chief to either kill him or get away from his table. As the chief angrily leaves, a lighthouse across the bay collapses.
Audrey and Nathan confirm that another crack destroyed the lighthouse. They try to find a pattern to the appearance of the cracks, but Audrey is clearly distracted. She tells Nathan that she hasn't been sleeping, and he tells her to go home and relax.
Duke finds Max waiting for him on his boat, sitting in his seat, but has no idea who he is. Max knows him, and says a prisoner, John Draft, said that Duke owed him money, and Max could collect it. Duke finally realizes that Max is the man who killed a family 25 years ago. Max takes off his shirt and prepares to fight, and Duke notices the maze tattoo on his forearm. He realizes that Max isn't there to fight, since it would risk his parole. Duke wonders why he's really there, but Max avoids the question and leaves.
Nathan enters his father's office and notices the file on Max, but Garland tells him not to concern himself about it.
Duke goes to see Audrey at the B&B, but she refuses to answer the door. Julia comes up and tells him that Audrey doesn't want to talk to anyone right now. Duke tells Julia to pass on a message about Max having a tattoo, and wonders if Julia's mother said anything to her about it. Julia tells him that she doesn't like what he's become and tells him to leave, but promises to pass on the message. Once he's gone, Audrey comes out and Julia tells her about Duke.
Audrey goes to the Grey Gull to find Max. He admits he's in town to talk to several people, and Audrey asks him about his tattoo. He avoids her question and she demands answers, but Max bumps the waitress and she spills coffee on his arm. He says that it's cold coffee and then tells Audrey he's going to church. She accuses Max of killing the Colorado Kid, but he points out that Garland believed that and was never able to prove it. When she has nothing else to say, Max leaves.
When Duke comes back to the restaurant, Audrey tells him what happened. Duke tries to remember anything about the day of the Colorado Kid murder, but he can't. The waitress overhears them and mentions that the coffee was scalding hot, and Audrey realizes that Max has the same condition as Nathan.
Nathan is out measuring another crack when Max comes to see him. Max claims he's an old friend of Garland's, and Nathan realizes who he is. He says he wants no trouble, but Nathan draws a gun and tells him to go. Max realizes that Nathan has no sense of touch, and insists that he has friends, the right kind of friends, in Haven.
Duke and Audrey talk to Leo, Max's former cellmate. He explains that Max didn't have the tattoos in prison, and he was a fighter. Nobody could beat him because he didn't feel pain. Leo tells them that Max said he was planning to contact some family when he got out of prison.
As Max walks down the street, Vince confronts him and asks why he's there. Max says he's there to get the family and the life back that Garland took from him. Vince warns that Garland isn't alone, but Max insists he has friends. Vince threatens him, and Max tells Vince to inform Dave that he'll be back for what's rightfully his. As he goes, he tells Vince that he'll kill him the next time they meet, but Vince reminds him that he couldn't get it done the last time.
On the docks, Duke wonders if Audrey has told Nathan whatever it is that she's holed up over. She refuses to tell him, and Duke realizes that she has to tell Nathan first. He wonders if he should like that, and she tells him to put up with it today.
At the station, Audrey tells Nathan that Max has the same condition that Nathan does, which means that they're related. Nathan goes to see Garland and demands the truth. Garland is resigned to telling him that Max is Nathan's biological father, and that he wanted to tell him. Nathan leaves, furious that Garland has kept another secret from him. Garland defends himself to Audrey, admitting that he hoped that things would get better so he could tell Nathan. Now, Things never got better and he's lost Nathan. Garland explains that he adopted Nathan after Max went to prison, and Max beat his wife and Nathan.
Max is walking down the street when a crack opens up behind him. He tries to run but the crack swallows him up.
Audrey and Duke come to the scene and Julia confirms that Max is dead. Nathan wonders if Duke is involved, but Audrey defends her friend. However, he isn't convinced and goes to the restaurant. Duke is waiting with a shotgun, and admits that he's afraid of Max. They explain that Max is dead, swallowed by a crack in the ground. Duke is relieved, and notes that if he was Troubled, he wouldn't be hiding. He has no idea why Max came to see him, but Nathan doesn't believe him. As Nathan goes, Audrey warns Duke that there could be someone else with a tattoo who plans to kill him, and says he should focus on that.
Garland goes to see the Teagues and tells them that Nathan knows the truth. They insist what Garland did for Nathan matters, and Vince notes that Max said he had friends. Garland isn't convinced, and figures that Nathan will be the only one at the funeral. The brothers tell Garland to give Nathan time, but he isn't convinced.
Julia comes to see Duke and admits that she might have been wrong about him. She shows him a photo of his grandfather with three men, and they all have maze tattoos on their forearms. Julia takes him to see something.
Nathan tries to get a lead on Max at the restaurant, and Dave and Vince are there. He realizes that they know, and Dave tries to reassure him. Nathan ignores him and asks the waitress about Max. When Dave pushes the matter, Nathan yells at him and Vince gets him away. The waitress confirms that Max was talking to Garland when the lighthouse fell. Audrey realizes that Garland is the one who is creating the cracks, and they appear when he gets upset.
The officers go back to the station and discover that Garland has left. Audrey asks Nathan what he plans to do about his father, and she insists that Garland is his father in every way that matters. She doesn't believe that Garland killed everyone, and pints out that Nathan could have left Haven but chose to stay there and work things out with his father. Nathan isn't convinced, and Audrey asks him where Garland would go.
Julia takes Duke to a cemetery and shows him that many of the graves have the maze symbol on them, including her grandfather's.
Audrey and Nathan find Garland on his favorite spot on the beach. He congratulates them on figuring it out, and explains that he couldn't find a way to control his abilities. Garland admits that he accidentally killed Max, but it doesn't matter. He prepares to shoot himself, warning Nathan that it's the only way out. When Audrey wonders what he's trying to hold together, he insists he's trying to hold the entire town together. As the ground shakes, Nathan tries to get his father to come in. Garland refuses, saying that it's Nathan's turn now and he's stronger than his father. He points out that Audrey knows the truth, that there's nothing that can be done. Nathan asks Audrey to say something, but she can't. Cracks spread around Garland and he tells Audrey to be careful, because not everyone's thrilled that she's back. He then turns into stone and shatters into a million pieces.
Later, Vince and Dave come out to help collect the pieces. They tell Audrey to talk to Nathan while they gather the evidence and hide it. As she goes, she asks them about the people that Garland mention. They claim they have no idea, but once she's gone, they wonder whether to tell her the truth. Dave insists that they should let it sort itself out, and keeping the secret will keep them alive.
Audrey tries to reassure Nathan, but he blames her for Garland's death. He points out that she didn't say anything when he needed to hear that she could help him like every other Troubled person. Audrey insists that Garland knew there was no hope, and tries to tell him about Lucy. Nathan doesn't want to hear it and tells her to go.
Duke invites Julia to his boat for a celebratory drink. He thanks her for her help, but she tells him to figure out the rest on their own. As they talk, Duke is unaware that the tattoo has appeared briefly on her shoulder. Julia insists that she may not even be there that long to help him, and insists that she still doesn't like him very much. Once Julia leaves, Duke adds her name to a chalkboard where he's assembled names and photos about the strange events in Haven.
Nathan is on the beach and finds Garland's badge. As he picks it up, the assembled pieces in the box start to quiver on their own.
At the station, Nathan finds Reverend Driscoll sitting in Garland's chair. Driscoll informs him that he and his "friends" plan to replace Garland with someone of their own. When Nathan vows to stop him, Driscoll tells him to leave or suffer.
Nathan finds Audrey on the beach and explains about Driscoll's plans. She tells him that it's his job to run things now, and they apologize. Audrey insists that he's the one person she can absolutely trust, and takes his name. She realizes that he can feel her, and tells him that she's really Lucy. Before Nathan can absorb the implications, a woman in a suit walks up to them. She asks Audrey to identify herself, and says she's an FBI agent. She reaches for her pocket, Audrey and Nathan draw their guns, and she draws her gun. She them her ID and says that she's Audrey Parker, Special Agent with the FBI.
