A Tale of Two Audreys - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The FBI agent identifying herself as Audrey Parker draws her gun and identifies herself. Audrey suggests they all put their guns down but Nathan refuses. Audrey Two says that Audrey knows she’s a fraud, but Nathan refuses to back down. The newcomer finally puts her gun down.

Outside the Good Shepherd Church, a young boy puts a newspaper boat in the gutter water and follows it down the street. Meanwhile, Duke comes up to the church in response to Reverend Ed Driscoll’s invitation. Driscoll invites him in but Duke refuses to come in. The reverend explains that Duke’s father was brave and just and stood with the righteous, and understood the struggle they faced. Unimpressed, Duke asks what he wants. Driscoll explains that he wants to protect Haven and help Duke. Duke asks about the maze symbol, but Driscoll refuse to help until he knows where Duke stands. Before Duke can pursue the matter, they hear the boy scream as he reaches into the drain where his boat has gone. Duke runs over and discovers that the boy’s arm is covered in blood. However, the blood isn’t the boy’s: it’s flowing in the gutters and coming out of the nearby water sprinklers. Duke calls the police but Driscoll warns that the police in Haven aren’t the answer.

Audrey 2 warns Nathan that he’s making a mistake as he puts her in his truck. Audrey says that she’s okay as they check out Audrey 2’s car. She admits that she was someone named Lucy once and that Audrey 2’s ID is good, but Nathan insists that Audrey 2 is lying. Audrey asks Nathan what they’ll tell people about his dad, but he insists that he’s dealing with it. A storm blows up and frogs start falling from the sky. They take refuge in Audrey Two’s car as frogs slam down.

Once the storm ends, Nathan insists it was a freak natural phenomenon. However, they both wonder if Audrey Two might have caused it, since they appeared when she arrived. Audrey notices that Audrey Two made a phone call, and the imposter says that she called Agent Howard. They hear a humming noise and look up as a swarm of gnats passes over Haven and head into town. They hear the sound of a car crash and go to investigate. One truck is turned over and the other one is empty because the driver has fled. Nathan stops traffic while Audrey tends to the driver in the damaged car. Audrey Two offers to help and Audrey reluctantly removes her handcuffs. They get the man out and Audrey Two applies CPR using the same harmonic that Audrey learned from the Campfire Girls. Audrey calls Agent Howard, who says that no one has called him pretending to be her. He tells Audrey that she’s to detain the imposter until he arrives.

As they go over the crime scene, Nathan points out that Audrey removed Audrey Two’s handcuffs. They check the other car and find a bloody handprint and empty beer cans. Audrey tells Audrey Two that she talked to Agent Howard, but lies and said that she’s supposed to take care of her. She has Audrey Two taken down to the station. Duke arrives and tells them about the blood. Nathan and Audrey both realize what blood, frogs, and gnats signify. As they talk, Duke gets a glimpse of a woman he recognizes in the crowd, but she slips away before he can point her out. Once he leaves, Nathan and Audrey wonders if God is punishing the town. As Nathan goes to talk to Rockwell, flies swarm out of several nearby objects and fly off into the sky.

Nathan goes to the Good Shepherd Church to talk to Driscoll. Driscoll also recognizes the Ten Plagues of Exodus and notes that the final plague is the death of the first-born son. He insists that he doesn’t want anyone punished, but he does want the “cursed” to seek forgiveness. Nathan insists that the Troubled did nothing to bring evil upon them, but Driscoll tells him to seek God’s forgiveness.

At the station, Dave and Vince approach Audrey and insist that Chief Wournos should be buried. They offer a piece of private land and Audrey promises to talk to Nathan. Audrey then talks to Audrey Two, who denies causing the plagues. Audrey still thinks there’s a connection, and Audrey Two refuses to say anything further until Agent Howard arrives. When Audrey goes over the pattern of incidents, Audrey Two decides to help. They realize that each of the plagues is following someone on foot using the roads, and figure it’s the missing driver. Audrey concedes that Audrey Two has nothing to do with the plagues, but leaves her locked up.

When Duke returns to his boat, he finds the woman from the crowd waiting for him: Evidence “Evi” Ryan. She insists she doesn’t want anything but Duke doesn’t believe her. She wonders why Duke is still in Haven and approaches him, but he tells her to stop. Evi wonders how he can be mad after three years and suggests she came to Haven to make it up to him, but he doesn’t believe that either. Finally she tells him that there’s a job, but Duke says that he’s not interested. Evi gives up for the time being but promises that she’ll be back/

Nathan and Audrey go to the home of the truck owners, the Shuberts, Arelene and Bud. The couple explains that their son-in-law, TJ Smith, had their truck. They haven’t seen him since their daughter Connie died a week earlier giving birth to TJ’s son, Aaron. Since then, TJ has been drinking heavily. The Shuberts don’t know where TJ is and say that they’ve been caring for Aaron themselves. Nathan and Audrey are called to a nearby cow field where they find hundreds of cows, dead. The field is on the way back to Haven from the last plague location.

Evi comes to see Duke at the Grey Gull. She tries to convince him to take the job, insisting that she owes him. Duke insists that he doesn’t want anything to do with her.

At the station, Nathan puts an APB out on TJ. Officer Allan reports a possible chemical leak causing boils and Audrey realizes that it’s connected. Allan asks where Chief Wournos is and Nathan claims that he doesn’t know. Audrey checks the new incident and Audrey Two points out that the new plague occurred in a circle, meaning that TJ has stopped. They get a report that a car was stolen in the same area and Audrey Two insists on going so that they can stop whatever is going on. Audrey agrees and convinces Nathan to let her come with them.

The boils occurred at a pawnshop owned by a man named Steve. He explains that TJ came into the shop and wanted to buy a gun, but Steve refused. TJ stole the car and left. Audrey Two threatens to call the ATF and Steve admits that he sent TJ to a man named Little Mike who hangs out at the Grey Gull. They go to the bar just as flaming hail rains down from the sky. Audrey spots TJ at the bar but he manages to drive away before they can catch him.

As Audrey calls to set up a blockade, Audrey Two asks what kind of freak could create the plagues. Audrey insists that they’re Troubled, not freaks. TJ comes over and explains that TJ has been drinking heavily because he was out of town when his wife died in labor. Nathan brings over Little Mike, who tells them TJ had a gun and was going to protect his son. They figure he’s going after whoever is causing the plagues. As the women leave, Nathan asks Duke if he has any older brothers. When Duke confirms that he does, Nathan asks him to come along so he can help if Nathan is stricken by the plague of the first-born son.

As they drive to the Shuberts and Aaron, Nathan tries to set up a roadblock but Laverne tells him that only Chief Wournos can do that. He finally tells Duke that Chief Wournos is dead, and that his remains are in the cooler on the seat next to Duke. As they pull up to the Shuberts, they see a cloud of darkness settling over the neighborhood. They continue to the house and find Driscoll and his people outside. Driscoll says that he’s there to help and refuses to leave. He invites Nathan to join them, but Nathan tells them to move back. The Shuberts are outside and tell them that TJ is upstairs with his son.

The two Audreys go to the upstairs nursery and finds TJ holding his son. Audrey agrees to put down her gun but Audrey Two refuses. TJ explains that he plans to kill himself and came there to kill himself. If the plagues continue, Aaron will die from the plague of the first-born. Audrey explains that he’s Troubled and that they need to stop it before it’s too late. The plague of darkness lifts but Aaron starts crying. Audrey looks outside to where Nathan and other first-born males are dying.

Audrey offers to help and asks TJ what happened earlier that day. He admits that he went to the Good Shepherd Church and read a Bible. Ever since then, the plagues have been chasing him. Audrey hands him a copy of The Velveteen Rabbit and tells him to read it aloud. As he does, first Aaron and then the first-born outside recover. As the two Audreys leaves the father with his son, the silhouette of a rabbit appears on the wall behind them.

Outside, Nathan asks Driscoll what would have happened if Audrey hadn’t succeeded. The reverend insists that sometimes sacrifices must be made, and that he is involved in a war against sin. Driscoll warns Duke that a side will choose him and he should be careful of the company he meets. Evi comes over to talk to them and introduces herself as Evi Crocker. She finally explains that she’s Duke’s wife and realizes that he never told them about her. Duke ushers her away and tells her that there’s nothing for her to make a buck off of in Haven. Evi doesn’t believe it and figures he set up shop in Haven for a reason.

At the station, Vince and Dave come to see Nathan. He agrees to tell the townspeople that his father was lost at sea, and the reporters agree to print a cover-up story.

Later, Nathan is in the field burying the cooler with his father’s remains. He takes out the ring that his father wore on a chain and examines it. Duke comes up with a shovel and offers to help. They both claim they haven’t been thinking about what Driscoll said and go to work.

At the Grey Gull that night, Audrey Two insists that she’s the real Audrey and that Audrey must have Googled her. Audrey tells her a private story of how when she was in her third foster home, she stabbed the abusive father of another foster girl. Audrey Two has the same memory, but neither one of them ever told anyone what happened. The FBI agents come in and Audrey tells Audrey Two that they’ll figure it out together. Agent Howard steps forward… an Agent Howard that Audrey has never seen. Audrey Two lies and tells him that Audrey escaped and is heading for Canada.
