During a Haven 10k marathon, one jogger, Reggie Buzzwell, grows increasingly thirsty. He finally runs into a first aid tent and sits down. Several seconds later his body dehydrates and Reggie dies in a matter of seconds.
Nathan and Audrey arrive to investigate and confirm that every drop of water was sucked out of Reggie’s body. They check his ID and confirm his identity, and Audrey wonders if Lucy Ripley ever ran a marathon. Nathan reminds her that she killed Driscoll but Audrey says that the investigation cleared her. He warns her that everyone in town is talking about the shooting. Dwight comes in and recognizes Reggie as an old fishing buddy, and tells them that Reggie was also Troubled but never said how. The cleaner then says that some of the Troubled are meeting the next night to discuss what might happen since Driscoll died and how they can look after each other. Nathan considers shutting it down.
Outside, one jogger, Patrick Grolsh, confronts another, Stu Pierce, and accuses him of being Troubled and causing Reggie’s death. Nathan confronts Patrick, who warns him that he won’t tolerate another cover-up of Troubled activities. While they argue, Stu slips away and Patrick warns the officers that if they screw up they’ll both go down.
At the station, Nathan takes a call and hangs up as Audrey comes in. The coroner’s report confirms excessive dehydration and Audrey notices that Nathan has used a different coroner so they can keep it as quiet as possible. He suggests that they need to avoid provoking the townspeople after Driscoll’s shooting. The officers are called to a home where another man, Barry, has turned up dehydrated to death while riding his lawnmower. His wife, Annie, confirms that her husband was Troubled and ashamed, and nobody knew except his family and his friend Stu. Stu was organizing the meeting and had convinced Barry to attend.
As they go to Stu’s house, Nathan notes that Annie told them that Stu had a list of Troubled and suspects that he might have wanted to kill his own. When they arrive at Stu’s house, they discover that someone has broken in. Stu’s wife Colleen tells them that someone abducted Stu and his list, and knows everyone who will be at the meeting.
At the
Cape Rouge, Duke tells Evi’s parents that he’ll inventory her stuff. He finds the silver box and a note inside from Evi, telling him to put it under his UV lizard light. When he does, Duke sees the name Crocker on the lid.
Nathan and Audrey interview Colleen and she confirms that two of them had numbers written on their legs, a 3 and an 8. Audrey confirms that the numbers belonged to Patrick and brings him to the station for questioning. He denies killing anyone, being Troubled, or working with someone who is. Patrick tells them that he’s a lawyer and will file a suit against them for harassment. Nathan abruptly ends the questioning over Audrey’s objections and says that he’s protecting her. She asks what he thinks of her shooting Driscoll and Nathan says that he knows she did the right thing. However, he says he can’t do his job if he’s under indictment and at least one of them has to follow procedure.
Dave and Vince are delivering the third edition of the paper announcing Driscoll’s death when Duke finds them and shows them the box. Vince claims he doesn’t know what it is even after Duke shows them his name. Dave examines it and says the design belongs to one of the town’s early silversmiths. Duke asks them to research the box’s providence and Vince says they’re too busy, but Dave agrees to help. Vince asks to keep the box for the research but Duke realizes something is up and keeps it. Once he leaves, Vince warns Dave that he’ll stop him, but Dave says that Haven has to face all of its realities. As Dave walks away, Vince makes a call to someone and says that he has a job for him.
That night, Duke returns to the
Cape Rouge and sees a light in the cabin. He sneaks in and the intruder attacks him. After a brief struggle, Duke turns on the light and confirms that it’s Dwight and he’s after the silver box. As they struggle for it, a key falls out. Duke grabs the key and Dwight grabs the box. They have a standoff when Duke refuses to give Dwight the key. Duke figures that Vince sent Dwight but wouldn’t tell him what they key was for. He pours two drinks and suggests that they join forces to learn the truth together.
The next day, Audrey puts an APB out on Patrick and finds him at a. Nathan catches up to her and complains that she’s just making Patrick’s case for her. She explains that she feels obliged to help the Troubled no matter what and doesn’t care if she breaks the law. Patrick comes out and Audrey goes over to arrest him for jaywalking.
Dave calls to tell Duke that the box was commissioned for Fitzwilliam Crocker, a distant ancestor who had it made as part of a set with a larger box. Once he hangs up, Duke tells Dwight that the key probably opens the larger box. He admits that his father never told him about the box or the key and they didn’t talk much. Dwight says that he and his father never got along either. Duke figures that his father Simon hid it on his old boat.
Audrey takes Patrick into the warehouse and handcuffs him, and demands answers. Nathan figures that Audrey wants to get fired and admits that he’s concerned about her personally, not just professionally. A fire alarm goes off and the officers spot smoke. Patrick tells Audrey to check when she asks if Stu is up there. Nathan figures that it’s a trap but Audrey says that she’ll be okay and goes upstairs. Stu is gagged and tied to a chair in the middle of a flaming room. He warns Audrey that his sweat causes the dehydration effect, but she’s able to free him due to her immunity and get him out.
Duke searches the bilge of his father’s old ship but finds nothing. Simon sold it to a man named Sal before he died and it was the last one he had. Dwight suggests that Simon might have found it hard to discuss the Troubles with his son, and finally admits to Duke his own affliction. He found out about it when he served a tour in Afghanistan, and his own father let him go without telling him about his affliction, rather than admit what he and Dwight were. Sal comes down and demands to know why they’re there. When Duke says it was the last boat that Simon owned, Sal tells him that Simon gave him a sweet deal because he was busying a 120. Duke confirms that Sal bought the
Cape Rouge and sold it to a man named Fiegler. Duke won it in a poker game from Fiegler, and they realize that Simon set it up.
At his home, Stu tells the officers that he was running with Reggie, who wanted to back out of the meeting. They argued and Stu touched his arm. The stress triggered his affliction, Stu ran home, and Barry inadvertently touched him. Stu agrees over his wife’s objections, explaining that Patrick planned to parade his affliction in front of the entire town. Patrick will go to jail for arson, but Stu worries that there are others in town with the same feelings. Colleen insists on going with Stu even though she can’t touch him until the Troubles end.
As Stu and Colleen prepare to leave, Nathan offers him the list back that he recovered from Patrick. Stu tells him to keep it and tells Nathan that the town is already divided and all Nathan can do is choose a side. As the Pierces leave, Nathan gets a text message. Audrey comes over and Nathan tells her that they’ll make it and that touching isn’t everything. She wonders if Nathan was right and she made things worse, but Nathan assures her that she did the right thing and he knows who she is. He then gives her the message, which is Lucy Ripley’s address. He explains that he’s been putting together everything they learned and hired a private investigator to track Lucy down. Audrey thanks him and promises that she’ll come back, and tells Nathan that he’s not just her partner either. She starts to walk away and then turns and kisses him.
Audrey arrives at Lucy’s home and goes in back to where an older woman is fishing. The woman, Lucy, recognizes Audrey and says that Audrey herself said 27 years ago that she would come there. They talk and Lucy says that someone must have found her if she doesn’t remember 27 years ago. Audrey came there on the run and said she had Lucy’s memories. Further, someone died and she discovered a terrible secret about how the Troubles started and how they could be stopped. Audrey then said that Lucy couldn’t tell anyone about it or the same people would come and erase her as well, and she should wait until Audrey returned to tell her what happened. A few months later, a man from Haven came there and said he could help. Lucy didn’t trust him and sent him away... after learning that his name was Simon Crocker.
Duke and Dwight search the
Cape Rouge and find a hidden barrel. Inside is the second silver box, containing a variety of weapons and a ledger. Audrey arrives and tells Duke they need to talk. She tells him that Simon knew Lucy Ripley and was looking for Audrey. Dwight grabs the box and heads off the boat, and Duke tries to stop him. The cleaner hits him with the box and Duke stabs him with a knife. Audrey goes to her friend’s side and watches as Dwight’s blood is absorbed into Duke’s skin. Duke gets up and reacts with superhuman speed, casually pushing Dwight 20’ over the side of the ship.
That night, Dave invites the Troubled to meet at the
Herald over Vince’s objections. Vince warns him that Dave is starting a war and refuses to have any part of it, but Dave just walks away. Dwight comes in to tell Vince that he didn’t get the box and that he didn’t know what he was up against. Vince admits that he didn’t tell Dwight the truth because Dwight would have either backed up or killed Duke. When Dwight wonders what they should do, Vince says that they’ll discuss it later. Nathan comes in and Dwight wonders if he’s going to shut the meeting down, but Nathan says that he can’t worry about what the town will think anymore and he’s gong to do what he thinks is right.
On the
Cape Rouge, Duke discovers that he’s lost his abilities. Audrey reads the ledger and discovers lists of names. The last few pages are written by Simon in anticipation of his death, despite the fact that he supposedly died in an accident. Simon wanted Duke to finish his work... and kill Audrey.
