Bill wakes up and finds his friend Arlo McMartin in his room. Arlo tells him that someone is breaking into his house and Sheila is in danger. Bill says that Arlo is dead and thinks that he’s dreaming, but Arlo insists that the intruder has a gun. Bill gets a gun out of his dresser and runs to the house next door. Meanwhile, Arlo brings Sheila downstairs and says to keep the lights out so the intruder won’t see her. Arlo then reaches for her throat. Bill, coming in, shoots Arlo in the back, thinking he’s the intruder. The bullets go through Arlo and kill Sheila. Arlo tells Bill that it’s payback for screwing his wife and leaves.
The next morning, Duke pulls up to the
Herald as Audrey gets out. She tries to ignore him but Duke tells her that she needs to know that he doesn’t plan to kill her because of the journal that his father Simon left him with orders to kill her. Audrey softens and says that they’ll figure it out together, and then goes to see Dave and Vince. She finds a photo of Dave on their bulletin board, confirms that it’s Dave, and then shows Dave a similar photo of him with Lucy. She smashes his coffee cup to the floor and tells them that it’s time for the truth. Vince apologizes and ignores Dave’s objections, saying there’s no point in keeping secrets now that Audrey knows. Audrey demands answers and Vince explains that she was Lucy, and before that Sarah, and before that they’re not sure. Each time she looks the same but has a different person’s memories, and she disappeared in-between each period of the Troubles. Whenever Audrey returns, she always helps the Troubled. The Teagues have no idea who Agent Howard is, but Vince gives her a ring that belonged to Sarah, the woman in the photo. He explains that Sarah was a friend and gave him the ring, and it belongs to her now. Before Audrey can question them further, Nathan sends her a text message saying they have a case. Once Audrey leaves, Dave says that Vince told Audrey too much, but Vince says that she needs his help and Dave won’t get in his way this time.
On the
Cape Rouge, Duke gets out of the shower and puts on the necklace with his boat whistle. Simon is standing there and compliments his son on the décor, as Duke stares in shock.
Audrey arrives at Sheila’s house and Nathan asks why she was late. She avoids the question and Nathan explains that Bill claims that Arlo made him shoot Sheila. Arlo was Sheila’s husband and died some time ago. Neighbors saw Arlo leaving the house and Audrey suggests they check and find out how he faked his death. Nathan then suggests that they should have dinner together and Audrey agrees. When she offers to make pancakes, Nathan wonders if she’s inviting him to dinner or breakfast. Audrey just smiles and walks away.
Duke casually accepts his father’s presence as a drug-induced hallucination, but Simon assures his son that he’s really there as a ghost. Playing along, Duke figures that he’s going to disappear for a few days and then come back wounded and expect Duke to nurse him back. Simon admits he was a lousy father and notices the box of weapons. He realizes that the Troubles must be back and asks if Duke has cured anyone yet. Duke tries to walk away but Simon insists on explaining that he was out killing people. The Crocker affliction is that when they kill someone, they kill the curse in all of their victims’ descendants. Simon realizes that he’s there to make Duke understand.
After failing to find Arlo’s electronic trail, Nathan and Audrey go to Eastside Cemetery to confirm that he’s dead. The gravedigger, Kyle Hopkins, tosses away a joint and refuses to cooperate, pointing out that they killed Driscoll and are siding with the Troubled. Nathan threatens to arrest him for the joint and Kyle reluctantly agrees. They confirm that Arlo is in the coffin. Nathan gets a call about another homicide. At the station, they talk to Bruce Fresnel, who killed Kurt, the man who raped his sister Annie. Annie told her brother the truth and Kurt confirmed it... eventually. As Bruce is taken away, Dave and Vince arrive and ask about Sheila’s murder. They confirm that Bill and Sheila were having an affair and Bill died of a heart attack when he found out. Audrey and Nathan figure that the dead are coming back to even old scores and using the living to do it for them.
At Eastside Cemetery, Kyle is reburying Arlo when Driscoll appears and asks for his help to finish God’s work in Haven.
Simon shows Duke a field where 14 people were killed during a third-grade campout. One of the children was Troubled and, after she was frightened by a campfire story, unleashed a wave of fear that killed the others. Simon could have killed the girl’s grandfather a week earlier but couldn’t bring himself to do it. The day after it happened, the grandfather begged Simon to kill him and he did. Simon insists that Duke has a responsibility and asks if anyone he’s cared about has died due to the Troubles. Duke hesitates but then walks away.
Audrey and Nathan go over the files together to try and figure out a connection between Arlo and Annie. As they work, they briefly lean close to each other but then awkwardly move away. They realize that both were buried at Eastside Cemetery.
Driscoll tells one of his men and Kyle to mark the houses of the Troubled using the list that he’s provided.
Audrey and Nathan go back to Eastside and Nathan tries to warn her about Duke. He explains that when Duke came back to Haven, they went fishing and Duke used Nathan as cover for his smuggling operation. They fought over it, triggering Nathan’s affliction, and Duke never cared. Audrey suggests that Duke might have trained, but Nathan says that she can never trust him. They check out Annie’s grave and confirm that everything is normal. However, Duke sees 20 of the cemetery’s dead walk toward them. Audrey can’t see them because of her immunity to the Troubles. The dead stare at them for a few seconds and then walk away, and Nathan figures they’re going to kill 20 more people.
As the officers leave the cemetery, they see Nathan burying something at his father’s grave. Audrey goes over against Nathan’s advice. Duke explains what Simon told him, and Nathan points out that Simon was buried at another cemetery. However, Duke confirms that Simon was moved there a year ago and they call the caretaker to determine who buried who. As Nathan goes to make the call, Duke asks Audrey if she ever wonders why she’s there. Audrey says that she’s there to help the Troubled and that’s all that matters, but Duke asks if it bothers her that she never ultimately solves anything and people keep dying. Audrey says that she doesn’t have an alternative, and Duke asks what she would do if she did. Nathan returns and confirms that Kyle is the person who buried all of the people involved.
Before they can find Kyle, Duke and Nathan see a familiar face: Chief Garland Wournos, visiting a grave. Audrey tells a reluctant Nathan to take the opportunity to be with his father one last time while they look for Kyle. Nathan explains that they covered up his death and buried his pieces in a cooler at a different cemetery. Garland says that he doesn’t know why he’s there and complains that Nathan is already arguing with him. Nathan admits that things are getting worse since Audrey killed Driscoll. Garland is happy to hear that Audrey killed Driscoll and figures that he’s there to see Nathan. He admits that he didn’t know how to tell Audrey that he knew Audrey when she was Lucy, and realizes that Nathan has fallen in love with Audrey. The Chief tells him to stop because Audrey is too important and she can’t take risks on Nathan’s behalf because she cares about him. Nathan tells his father that he’s wasting his time telling him not to love Audrey.
Audrey and Duke drive through Haven looking for the ghosts. She notices a red mark in front of a house, one of several, and follows a trail of wreckage to a nearby house. As they step onto the porch, Duke sees Driscoll walk toward them. He suggests that Audrey go inside and she agrees, and Driscoll tells Duke that he has more important things to do than hurt Audrey. He’s there to help Duke fulfill his destiny and invites him to come with him, and says that he’ll take his revenge on Audrey if Duke doesn’t. After a moment, Duke goes with him.
Nathan picks up Audrey after she realizes that Duke has abandoned her. They go to Kyle’s house just as the man’s pregnant wife Marissa comes out. Audrey notices red paint on her hands, the same as the color of the marks, and she pretends that they’re lost. Marissa drives away and Audrey and Nathan follow her. She drives into the woods and goes to a cabin where Kyle is working with Driscoll’s men. They’ve abducted dozens of the Troubled, chloroformed them, and locked them into an old barn. As they prepare to set the barn on fire, Nathan sees Driscoll walking up with Duke. Driscoll’s men find and capture them.
Driscoll shows Duke the unconscious Troubled and the smuggler realizes what they have planned. However, Driscoll says that rather than burn them, Duke is going to save them. Duke grabs a knife from a man as Nathan and Audrey are brought over. They ask if he’s working with Driscoll and he drops the knife. Nathan reminds Driscoll that he used to preach forgiveness, but Driscoll says that he’s all out. When Kyle asks Driscoll what he should do, Audrey tells Kyle that he’s the one who brought the ghosts back. Simon appears and explains to Duke that Kyle is going through the same process that so many of the Troubled that he “cured” did. Kyle asks Driscoll for help, but Driscoll says that only Duke can help Kyle by killing him and sparing Kyle’s son the curse.
One of Driscoll’s men puts the knife back in Duke’s and, and both Driscoll and Simon tell Duke to accept his destiny and save Kyle’s family. Kyle himself begs Duke to kill him and save his child, and Duke and Simon tell Duke to ignore Audrey when she says there’s another way. Duke pauses and then says that Audrey is his friend, but Simon says that Audrey was Sarah when she killed Duke’s grandfather, and Lucy when she killed him. He insists that Audrey will kill Duke, and that the tattooed men are her pawns. As Duke hesitates, Kyle runs forward, grabs Duke’s hand, and impales himself.
As Duke absorbs the blood, Kyle thanks him for saving his son. As Nathan stares angrily at Duke, Garland arrives and tells Simon that he planned to kill him, but Audrey beat him to it. Driscoll says that what matters is that Duke has a taste of what he can do. Garland says that Audrey will kill Duke, but Simon says that this time she’ll be unable to save her son. In response, Garland says that he has a son and tells him to take care of Audrey. As Kyle dies, the ghosts of Driscoll, Simon, and Garland fade away. Audrey grabs her gun and orders Driscoll’s men to surrender, and they give up.
Later, Vince returns to the
Herald and Dave reveals that he knows that Vince had Kyle dig up the cooler with Garland’s remains. Vince claims that he did it three weeks ago and that they needed Garland back, and warns that Audrey is different this time. Dave doesn’t believe it and storms off.
At her apartment above the Grey Gull, Audrey prepares for her dinner with Nathan. There’s a knock and the door and she goes to answer it, but someone tasers her unconscious. Nathan arrives a little later and finds no sign of Audrey. He does find Duke’s whistle necklace.
On the
Cape Rouge, Duke is drinking when Nathan storms in and demands to know where he can find Audrey. Duke has no idea what he’s talking about despite the evidence and protests his innocence. Nathan shoves him to the floor and aims his gun at him. As Duke reaches for a hidden gun, he sees the maze tattoo appear on Nathan’s arm. After a few seconds, there’s a gunshot.
