A younge german man called Dieter Lotschmeyer arrives in Aidensfield to visit his father's grave. however, his father dropped a bomb on the village during the war, killing popular residents, Joe Tyler and his wife, and Dieter is forced to face angry villagers, especially Joe's son, Tyler. When the graveston is vandalised, Nick attempts to stop a bitter battle from breaking out by trying to unite the two boys. Meanwhile, Walter and Hilda Openshaw are holidaying in the area. But Walter is far from impressed by the village, so Greengrass decides to take him on a drinking binge. however, both men fail to return and a search party gets underway.
