Mohinder has traveled to Kanyakumari, India to dispose of his father’s ashes in the waters, while his mother tries to comfort him by assuring that her husband has gone on to the next life.
Isaac is in a room on a bed while Eden tends to him and assures him that he’ll soon overcome his heroin addiction. Isaac wonders if he’ll still be able to paint the future without using drugs, but Eden reassures him that she’ll show him how to pain without the heroin, and prevent the explosion in the future. She notes that she has been through the same thing he’s going through.
In Midland Texas, Hiro and Ando have stopped at the Burnt Toast Diner. While they discuss the menu, waitress Charlie is talking with Sheriff Davidson and his deputy Lloyd. Charlie shows off by displaying her memory of whatever she’s read. She comes over to Hiro’s table and translates the Japanese writing on his jacket, and explains she just learned Japanese a few days ago from a book. She’s planning on going to Japan and explains that recently she’s been remembering everything she’s ever seen and read. As she takes their order, they’re unaware that Sylar is watching them from across the room.
Nirand, a friend and colleague, talks to Mohinder at the funeral and confirms that he won’t be going to New York City. Nirand point out that Mira, another old friend and colleague of Mohinder’s, is at the funeral and suggests she might have feelings for him. He then tells Mohinder that he can start his classes at Chennai University and can use their father’s old office. Mohinder goes there and turns on the computer, finding the algorithm program. Mira comes in and apologizes for what she said about Chandra before Mohinder left for the States. She offers him a job at her genetic research company as long as he doesn’t follow his father’s line of reasoning, and Mohinder agrees to think about it.
Matt is talking to Audrey, who is furious he attacked his former partner Tom. They then prepare to talk to Ted Sprague before Homeland Security hauls him away as a terrorist, and Audrey gives Matt a radiation badge.
Hiro helps Charlie learn Japanese and the two of them flirt, while Sylar keeps a particular eye on Charlie.
Matt and Audrey go into the interrogation room and Ted complains that he isn’t allowed to attend his wife’s funeral. As he gets angry, the radiation badges start to turn red and the water in the pitcher boils. Matt gets Ted to calm down by demonstrating his own power and showing he’s not the only abnormal one. When Ted thinks about having a blackout, Matt checks his neck and finds the same marks on his neck that he got after blacking out at the bar.
Mohinder looks through his father’s journal and finds a key that he pockets. Then he drifts off to sleep and have a dream of himself arguing with Chandra before his father left for New York City. Then he has a vision of Chandra speaking with his wife and admitting the trip may be a bad idea. His wife convinces him that he should go if it’s what he truly believes in, even if Mohinder is mad at him. Inside the dream, a small boy bounces a ball up to Mohinder and notes he wants the ball back… but points at Mohinder. Mohinder wakes up from the dream, confused.
Ted explains to Matt and Audrey that he blacked out at a hotel bar in Kansas, near a Haitian student. He woke up two days later with no memory of what happened, and has had headaches ever since. Matt explains that the same thing happened to him and the same Haitian was present at the scene. Before they can go further, Homeland Security takes Ted away and Matt is unable to stop them.
In Odessa, TX, Mr. Bennet arrives at the Primatech Paper Co., a secured warehouse. He talks to Eden who tells him they’ve cured Isaac of his physical addiction but he’s still hooked mentally. They meet with Isaac and assure him that his ability is a gift, not a curse, and they need his help.
At the diner, Hiro goes to the bathroom and Charlie goes in the back to open a can of food. There’s a cutting noise and blood pours down from her scalp. Sheriff Davidson investigates and finds Charlie dead. Hiro returns and is shocked to find her dead in the few minutes he was gone.
Mohinder discusses his dream with his mother and she admits it was true. Further, she explains that Mohinder had a sister, Shanti, who was three years older then him and died when she was five. Chandra had believed it was special, but never mentioned her after her death because it was too painful.
Bennet explains to Isaac that the cheerleader he has been painting is his daughter Claire, and the figure pursuing her is Sylar, who is going to kill her the next night at the homecoming game. He explains that they need Isaac’s help to find Sylar, who is killing other “special” people,” before he gets to Claire. With time running out, Bennet offers Isaac heroin but the artist refuses. Bennet explains that he adopted Claire 14 years ago after she was left an orphan after a recovery incident involving “special” people. Touched, Isaac offers to try one more time without using the drugs.
Mohinder returns to his father’s office and finds the boy from his dream trying to open a locked drawer. The boy runs out the door and when Mohinder follows him, he finds himself in New York City watching a man in the back of Chandra’s taxi brutally kill him. The cab vanishes and the young boy appears, and shows Mohinder the key he found earlier. Mohinder wakes up and looks at the key.
Claire visits Primatech and asks her father for paper for a homecoming banner. Eden arrives and after Bennet sends his daughter to the sample room, she explains that Isaac still can’t paint. Bennet insists that Isaac will have to use the drugs for now, but Eden protests since she’s been working to keep the artist clean and that he said she’d never have to “do it” again. Bennet talks briefly about the past and warns that using her is the “easy way,” and they know what the hard way is. Eden goes into Isaac’s room with a needle of heroin and whispers into his ear, and despite his earlier reluctance he takes the injection.
Sheriff Davidson is talking to Hiro and Ando while Charlie’s body is taken out. He reveals that her head was ripped open and asks them to stay. Hiro believes her death is connected to Isaac’s in the future and the same person is responsible. Hiro refuses to do nothing this time and prepares to jump back to save her. Ando warns that he doesn’t have control over his powers yet but Hiro tells him to count to five and he’ll return. Hiro disappears… but doesn’t reappear after five seconds. Or ten. Or twenty.
Matt arrives home to find Janice going through a photo album. She knows that he punched Tom McHenry and Matt overhears her thinking that he knows. He’s been suspended for one month without pay, and she admits that something happened between her and Tom. She says it’s over, but before they can talk further Matt gets a call from Audrey, saying that Ted has escaped.
Mohinder uses the key to unlock his father’s desk and finds a hidden file with the name “Sanjog Iyer.” It’s about the Indian boy Mohinder saw in his dream, holding a ball, and talks about sleep and earning.

As Ando waits for Hiro at the diner, he’s unaware that a birthday photo of Charlie now shows Hiro as well.
