Distractions - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Claude is training Peter in the use of his powers, and as their first lesson plans to show him how to retain a power even when the source isn't around. Claude steals a woman's purse, gives it to Peter, then walks away… leaving Peter visible.

Dr. Witherson tries to get Niki to let her speak with Jessica. Niki starts to talk about her childhood but then Jessica takes over and starts ripping free of the chains.

Sylar telekinetically slams Mr. Bennet into a wall, takes his driver's license, locks the cell door behind him, and leaves.

Isaac and Simone talk about where Peter is. Isaac admits that he doesn't know, even though he's been trying to paint Peter's future to get some glimpse of his location.

Claire tells her mother Sandra that she and Zach are going to skip school an aquarium to talk to a marine biologist for their manatee paper. Sandra says it's okay. She then prepares to go to Kermit to talk to her biological mother.

At a warehouse in Port Washington Harbor, Hiro confronts his father Kaito and his sister Kimiko. His father insists Hiro return to Tokyo and take the job of executive vice-president as a step toward taking Kaito's place. Hiro refuses and explains that he has a greater destiny. Kaito responds by taking Isaac's painting of Hiro and the T-Rex and ripping it apart.

Niki regains control and discovers that Jessica badly beat Dr. Witherson. The prison guards come in, knock her out, and haul her back to her cell.

Claude bails Peter out and suggests that since he's always thought of himself as helping others, he can't use his abilities without the source being around. The Englishman doesn't believe in that mentality, insisting that everyone is out for themselves. When Peter swears that Simone isn't like everyone else, Claude suggests they pay her a surprise visit.

Kaito moves away and as Hiro attempts to piece the painting back together, his sister Kimiko explains that his rebellion has weakened Yamagato Industries. The shareholders are starting to doubt Kaito, since he can't even manage his own wayward son.

Claire and Zach locate Meredith, living in a trailer park in Kermit.

Sylar goes to the Bennet home posing as a Primatech deliveryman. Sandra invites him in for dinner.

Claire makes contact with Meredith, who explains that she's been in Mexico for a while and just returned to Kermit. They talk about the fire and Claire demonstrates her power by cutting her arm and letting it heal. Meredith returns the gesture by demonstrating her own power: she lights a fire with her mind and holds it in the palm of her hand.

When Sylar starts talking about Claire, Sandra gets suspicious and tries to call her husband. Sylar telekinetically knocks the phone out of her hand and prepares to kill her. Mr. Bennet and the Haitian arrive and Bennet shoots Sylar. Sylar flees out the back and Bennet has the Haitian erase Sandra's memories of the incident.

Claire asks her birth mother about her father, but Meredith begs off until later, saying it's complicated.

Simone confronts Isaac on the roof of the building. He says that he doesn't think there's any hope for the future based on what he's painted, but Simone assures Isaac that she believes in him. The two draw close, unaware that Claude and Peter, invisible, are watching them.

Hiro decides to accept his father's officer, and begins issuing orders about consolidating their management operations in Tokyo. Kimiko disagrees, pointing out all the flaws in the plan. Hiro says that he is the one entitled to give orders, but when Kimiko gives all the valid reasons not to consolidate, Hiro notes she's the one who should take the position and succeed Kaito.

Aron Malsky, Linderman's lawyer, visits Niki in prison. Malsky informs her that she's going to be freed as a death row prisoner confessed to all of the crimes she committed.

Claude continues to taunt Peter over his idealism and then tells him to fly… and shoves him off the roof. Peter slams into a taxicab below, but regenerates. Peter understands that he needs to remember people and starts duplicating all the powers he's mimicked, and has another vision of himself exploding in the future.

Isaac gets a vision of Peter, partially visible and sitting on the ground next to the cab. He calls Bennet with the news and Bennet realizes that Peter's invisibility means an old acquaintance isn't dead as he thought.

Kaito reluctantly agrees to make Kimiko his successor. The family makes their peace and Ando tries to give Kimiko a hug.

Micah calls for Niki once he gets the news that she's been cleared of all charges. However, Jessica is now in complete control.

Claire and Zach come home and Sandra gives them grief for skipping school. When Claire reminds her that she gave her permission earlier to go to the aquarium, Sandra becomes confused and Claire realizes that the Haitian wiped her memories.

In Kermit, Meredith makes a phone call to Claire's biological father: Nathan Petrelli. She tells him that their daughter is alive.
