The Kindness of Strangers - Recap

Noah is looking at the Mendez painting showing his death, and Claire with a boy, when his wife comes. He asks her if Claire is dating, just as Claire comes in asking about dating. When she mentions a boy that she considers a possible danger, her father says he wants to meet the boy but Claire says it’s just hypothetical.

Molly wakes up at her apartment in New York City. She’s had a nightmare and Matt and Mohinder come in and try to comfort her.

Nathan visits his sons at their school in Washington D.C. and talks with them briefly, asking if they like him with the beard. They’re less then enthused. Their teacher comes over and says that he can’t be there, forcing him to leave.



Derek, Maya, and Alejandro are driving through Mexico and Derek warns them they’ll have problems getting over the border to America. They come across a man lying in the middle of the road: Sylar.

Micah and Damon get ready for school and Damon asks Nana for money so he can watch a wrestling PPV. Monica comes in, acting more confidant, and notices Nana watching a cooking show where the cook is making tomato roses. After Monica leaves, Micah says he has a way to get the PPV.

Matt and Detective Fuller talk to Angela Petrelli and she admits that she killed Kaito, and then later attacked herself out of guilt. Matt picks up her thoughts and realizing what he’s doing, Angela tells him to drop the matter, since otherwise the public will find out about the Heroes.

Claire stands up to Debbie and is offered a slot on the cheerleading team. She thinks about it, taking a release form, and West comes over to talk to her. Claire tries to warn him off, saying her father is overly protective. West pushes the matter and she refuses to let him meet her dad, but agrees to a date.

Nathan meets with Matt at the police station and Matt indicates that he knows Nathan’s mother is innocent because of his telepathy. Matt refuses to drop the matter, pointing out Molly drew the same symbol that was on the death threat photos. Nathan offers to help but insists on getting five minutes alone with his mother. He tries to find out why she’s making a false confession but she tells him to get back to his family and refuses her help. She insists that it doesn’t matter if she killed Kaito, since she’s guilty of so matter other crimes.

Sylar explains to Maya and the others that he was robbed and all of his money and papers stolen. Maya shows him the Chandra book and how the plan to find him in New York, and Sylar says he’s the doctor’s old friend. He introduces himself as Gabriel Gray, which Maya thinks sounds like an angel’s name.



Monica is working at the fast food restaurant with her friend Camille, and complaining about how Hurricane Katrina took away her mother and the chance for her to get a college education. As she talks, she is unconsciously cutting a tomato into the rose like the chef on the television. The manager informs her that she won’t be getting the management promotion because she can’t afford to relocate.

After supper, Claire goes out, saying she’s working on a research project and turning down her father’s offer of a ride. Noah follows her but just misses West flying her off.



Nathan and Matt are looking for the Company photo while Matt mentions that his own wife was pregnant with another man. They find the photo and Matt recognizes one of the men as his father Maury.

West flies Claire up to the Hollywood sign and he encourages her to open up. She’s reluctant to and he tells her he knows how she feels but he can’t help her if she won’t trust him. Claire jumps off the sign but West catches her, saying that even if she would have healed, he doesn’t want her hurt. They hover in the sky and kiss.



Micah and Damon are at the house and Micah uses her power to unscramble the pay-per-view. Monica comes in, unaware that Micah used his power to get the signal, and tells him that he shouldn’t be doing something illegal. As Micah tries to comfort her about her messed-up life, she watches the wrestlers on TV.

Matt is at the apartment when Mohinder comes in with Molly. He asks Molly to try and find his father, who abandoned him when he was 13. However, when she sees the picture, she recognizes Maury as the “nightmare man” from her dreams.



Nathan is looking over pictures of Peter, but as he glances in a mirror he sees a reflection of himself covered in hideous burns. Furious, he smashes the mirror with his bare hands.

West drops Claire off near her home and they’re running late. She wonders what to tell her father and West advises her to lie about something else to cover up the important lie.

Derek and the others stop off in a town and he shows Sylar a newspaper with the twins’ shown as wanted criminals. Sylar tells a concerned Derek he should go the police, but picks up a brick and follows Derek. A few minutes later, he goes back to the car alone and asks Maya about the wanted notice. He warns her that Derek is calling the police and Maya starts to bleed black. Sylar starts to collapse but Alejandro negates her ability with his own and Sylar realizes the nature of their powers. They drive off, unaware that Sylar has killed Derek and left his body behind.



Claire comes in late and lies to Noah that she was trying out for cheerleading. He’s angrier, thinking it will ruin their cover, but she asks for just one normal thing for herself and he reluctantly agrees.

Later, the Haitian arrives with news about the Mendez paintings, saying they’re hidden in Odessa. He then has to explain that he means Odessa, Ukraine, rather than Odessa, Texas. Noah agrees.

Matt tries to convince the frightened Molly to locate his father, over Mohinder’s objections. The two men spar until Molly agrees to find Maury.

Monica and her boss are closing the fast food restaurant when an armed gang banger comes in. He tries to get at the register but Monica springs into action, using the wrestling moves she was watching earlier. The gang banger runs off, and Monica tries to explain to her boss she learned the move from TV.



In New York City, Molly uses her power and starts to narrow in on Matt’s father in Philadelphia. She starts to home in on him, locating a third floor apartment and giving them the information. However, then a violent psychic attack hits her, knocking her unconscious. As Matt hovers over her, he can hear her frightened mental screams using his telepathy.
