Out of Time - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Hiro, Yaeko, and her father are being held in Whitebeard’s tents, and Kensei is forcing Hiro to inhale opium to disrupt his concentration. Kensei explains that after Hiro’s betrayal, he went to Whitebeard who offered him anything he wanted for Hiro’s capture. Kensei asked for half the country and Yaeko, and Whitebeard agreed. Yaeko refuses to give in and stands by Hiro. Kensei insists that he will be a hero.

In Odessa, Bennet and the Haitian examine the photos and Bennet takes pictures of them. He then calls Mohinder, who is at the Company facility watching over the comatose Molly. Examining the painting of Mohinder holding a gun, Bennet asks him if the Company has given him a gun yet. Mohinder confirms they haven’t and Bennet prepares to forward the photos electronically. Mohinder warns that his partner is watching him and admits that he isn’t sure of what he’s doing. Niki arrives and Mohinder hastily hangs up, while Bennet burns the paintings.

Niki takes Mohinder to see Bob, but the facility is on the alert and Bob warns them that Matt and Nathan have arrived and told him that Maury is coming to kill him.

Peter and Caitlin are in the future 2008 and find the streets of New York City empty. Finally the CDC captures them and takes them to a decontamination facility.

Claire wakes up in the morning and gets a text message from West. He mentions waffles and she goes downstairs to find him with her mother, making waffles for breakfast. Sandra is happy to have met West but Claire isn’t thrilled. After Sandra leaves the room, West shows Claire the newspaper article about Debbie being arrested by the police for public intoxication. Claire still isn’t happy with the high-profile situation and quickly hides a family picture so that West doesn’t see her father: his kidnapper.

At the Company facility, Matt insists on taking Bob into custody, but Bob says they need to deal with Maury now. He tells Mohinder he must inject Maury with the virus to stop him for good. Mohinder warns that they could unleash the virus on the public, endangering everyone, but Bob ignores him and tells Matt he’s the only one who can deal with Maury.

In the past, once the guards move away from the tent for a few minutes, Yaeko uses a hidden blade to pick her lock and get free of her chains. She gets Hiro away from the opium and tries to help him focus. Hiro manages to teleport them all away just as the guards return.

After going through decontamination, Peter and Caitlin are separated and Peter is taken to meet with Howard Lemay, who has a death certificate confirming Peter died in the past over New York City. Lemay then explains that a virus broke out on March 20, 2007, and has since killed 93% of the world’s population. Caitlin is to be deported as a non-American, and the building’s rooms are filled with hundreds of dead bodies.

Matt goes to see Molly and apologizes for his responsibility in her condition. Molly seems to respond, her monitors beeping. He projects “I love you, Molly” into her mind.

Niki and Mohinder go to get the virus but Niki’s haunted by the image of D.L., who calls her a killer who has destroyed their family. She doesn’t say anything to Mohinder as he gets the vial and after they leave, Maury emerges from the shadows.

Nathan tries to find out who Adam Monroe is and Bob explains that he is the one trying to eliminate the original twelve members. Adam is using Maury as a weapon against them, after engineering his escape two weeks earlier. Bob then reveals to Nathan that his brother Peter is alive.

The CDC bring Angela Petrelli in to see Peter, but he doesn’t remember her. She explains that she knows everything about him and pushes him to remember who she is. Images of his past flash through his mind until he recognizes her.

Clare and West are on the couch at the Bennet house making out and she examines the kidnap marking. She starts to tell him about her father but hesitates and he wonders if she’s uncomfortable with how fast he’s taking their relationship. She covers by asking for a Popsicle and going to the kitchen. West follows her and they see her father come in. West recognizes him and thinks that it’s a trap, even after Claire explains that Noah is her father. West runs to the backyard and flies away, leaving Claire standing there with two Popsicles. Her father wonders what she’s doing and she covers by handing him one.

In the past, Hiro prepares to deal with Whitebeard, telling her that he still believes in Kensei to do the right thing. He leaves her beneath the cherry blossom trees then teleports to the camp.

Maury is still watching Niki and Mohinder, and sends another nightmare image of D.L. to haunt Niki. Mohinder can’t see the image but Niki can, and then she sees an image of Bob come in and kill D.L. As her husband dies in her arms, he tells her that she has to kill Bob. Niki slams Mohinder across the room when he tries to stop her, then grabs a syringe and goes to kill Bob.

In Japan in the past, Hiro teleports into the tent where Whitebeard has the gunpowder for the weapons stored. He prepares to set it on fire but Kensei has figured out what he’d do and is waiting for him. They fight with katanas, just like in Isaac’s painting. They knock over a lantern in the struggle, which sets the tent cloths on fire. Hiro manages to defeat Kensei but refuses to kill him. He offers to teleport Kensei out but he refuses and vows to get revenge. Hiro has no choice but to teleport away as the gunpowder explodes, destroying the camp.

Bob explains to Nathan that they last placed Peter in Ireland, but they’re interrupted when Niki slams through the door. Matt comes to investigate but suddenly finds himself in the cheap apartment where he grew up as a child. Molly is there as well, conscious, and she explains that they’re both trapped in Maury’s nightmare. Matt tries to get out of the door and fails, but uses his burgeoning power to pull Maury into the dreamscape.

Niki grabs Nathan and Bob tries to get through to her and she manages to partially shake off Maury’s influence. She injects herself with the virus, hoping that it will kill her before she kills Bob.

In the nightmare, Matt tells his father that he isn’t scared, and the apartment is Maury’s nightmare, not Matt’s. He says that he’s a good man, unlike his father, and takes Molly and walks out the door as Maury screams. Matt and Molly wakes up, while Maury is on the floor, unconscious.

In the future New York City, Peter and Angela leave but Peter spots Caitlin being taken away with the other deportees. He tries to get to her and teleport away but ends up going back through time by himself to the moment he left Montreal.

Hiro searches the camp but only finds Kensei’s helmet. As he holds it, Yaeko tells him that he is the one who defeated Whitebeard, going back in time to become the hero he sought to help. Hiro tells her that now the legendary Kensei must complete his last story and cut out his heart to save his love. They kiss and then he teleports to the present.

Mohinder tries to cure Niki, using his blood as the basis for the antidote. However, he discovers that the virus has mutated and he can no longer provide a cure.

Hiro appears at his father’s company in Japan and meets with Ando. Ando is forced to tell him that Hiro’s father is dead.

When Mohinder gives Bob an update on the virus mutation, Bob tells him to go to California to check out a new superpowered individual: a girl who fell 50’ and lived. Bob figures that they can use the girl’s regenerative abilities to develop a new antidote. Realizing that it’s Claire, Mohinder tells Bob that he’s working with the Bennet and he no longer knows what to do.

When Bennet finds out from his wife that Claire is seeing a boy, he confronts her and accuses her of endangering the family. She says that his recent “trips” are putting them in danger a lot more then she is. Bennet finally says that the family must move again, but Claire refuses and goes upstairs.

Peter is in the Montreal warehouse and preparing to teleport forward in time to try and rescue Caitlin, but he spots someone in the shadows. He instinctively fires a bolt of electricity at the man, who absorbs it in his outstretched hand. The badly burned heals almost instantly and the man emerges from the shadows: it’s Kensei, who introduces himself as Adam Monroe and says now it’s time for the two of them to carry out their plan and change history.
