Hiro collapses into a trance after eating Usutu’s food. He finds himself looking back into the past, 18 months ago, where Arthur Petrelli is introducing his sons and wife at a party. Linderman is there to offer his congratulations and then talks to Nathan about his investigation into Linderman’s affairs. Nathan tells him to be ready for arrest and walks off. Linderman asks Arthur what he’s reading from Nathan’s mind, and Linderman warns that Nathan could realize that Arthur is behind everything Linderman has been doing. He wants Arthur to convince Nathan to back off but Arthur warns that he won’t. Arthur says he’ll have one last talk, and then kill him if it doesn’t work.
One year ago in Memphis, TN, Meredith and Flint are robbing a convenience store and Flint sees a man who seemingly ignores him. The man turns around: Thompson. When Flint attacks him, Thompson sprays Flint with flame suppressant and he runs off. Thompson draws a taser and prepares to subdue Meredith.
In Brooklyn, NY, one year ago, Gabriel is in his store considering suicide while remembering the man he acquired is first power from. He hangs himself just as Elle comes in. Seeing him hanging, she uses her powers to cut him down. He begs her for forgiveness and she tries to assure him that everyone does bad things. She encourages him to talk about it and claims that she was just there to get her watch fixed. When she leaves, she meets with Noah Bennett outside, and he says it’s important that they observe Gabriel’s unique power in his natural “setting” rather than capture him. Elle wonders how she can get close to Gabriel and Noah suggests she offer him pie.
Thompson meets with Meredith in a cell and goes over her record, which includes setting group homes on fire. He suggests she join the Company as an agent and she tries to bargain for Flint’s immunity. Thompson refuses and Meredith nonetheless agrees to train as an agent.
Despite Arthur’s disappointment in Peter, Angela assures him that when Peter manifests his powers, Arthur will be impressed. Nathan comes out and Arthur tries to warn him off of Linderman without success. Later, Nathan and his wife are run off the road and Nathan manifests his powers for the first time. In the hospital they’re informed that she’s crippled. Angela and Arthur arrive and Nathan accuses Linderman of being responsible for the attack. Peter pulls Nathan off but Nathan says he’s going after Linderman and warns Arthur that if he’s standing by Linderman, he’ll be hurt as well.
Later, Angela reports to Arthur on Heidi’s condition, and wonders if Nathan was right. Arthur dismisses her suspicions that Linderman was responsible for the attack and wants to him say that he didn’t order Linderman to kill Nathan. Arthur denies it and Angela believes it.
In Austin TX, Thompson takes Meredith on a training mission and they approach homeless vet Denny Pine at a shantytown. Thompson identifies them as VA representatives but Pine doesn’t believe it. He transforms his hand into metal and knocks Thompson down, but Meredith superheats his hand and then stuns him with a taser. Thompson congratulates her, welcoming her to the Company.
One year ago in New York, Gabriel is going over maps and lists when Elle arrives with a pie while Noah runs surveillance outside. She notices the list he has and flirts with him, but he hastily throws away the list when she shows an interest in it. He explains about his power and gives a demonstration, and says they’re others. Elle asks who the others on the list are but he takes an interest in the pie. When his back is turned, Elle grabs the list.
Thompson and Meredith take Pine in and he says that the real test is loyalty, and when she obeys without question then she’ll be an agent. As she takes Pine to a cell, she sees Flint in another cell. He says he’s going to be trained as an agent as well. Thompson asks if there’s a problem and Meredith says there isn’t.
Elle talks to Gabriel about his abilities and the others like him, and how he has a hunger for obtaining powers. She assures him he’s special just as he is. When she goes outside, Noah says they need to kick it into high gear but she says she doesn’t think he’ll kill again. Noah insists Gabriel will kill again and they need to continue surveillance. When Elle protests, he realizes that she likes him. She refuses to participate but Noah warns her that if she doesn’t go through with the mission then she’ll be on her own. Elle finally agrees to go along and Noah suggests they arrange a meeting with another person with special powers.
Linderman meets with Arthur, who is displeased that Linderman’s attempt failed. Linderman suggests they postpone but Arthur doesn’t want to postpone the plan for New York. Linderman agrees but Angela overhears them. Arthur goes after her as she runs into the kitchen and grabs a knife. He uses telepathy on her to convince her that Nathan has to die.
In the present, Hiro sits up and says “Murder!” but Usutu warns Ando not to warn him. He tells Ando to mix a substance to generate fumes food and determines that something has disturbed Hiro. Usutu exposes Hiro to the fumes and he collapses again.
Meredith goes to get Flint out of his cell and explains that the Company is tricking him. They escape and get on a train heading for Houston, and she explains that he can’t trust the Company. They’re interrupted when Thompson stuns her with a taser. Flint thinks Thompson killed her and Thompson agrees then goes after him. As he goes past Meredith, she wakes up and hides. She then calls out a warning to Flint and Thompson goes after her, and she tackles him and they struggle. Flint jumps out of the train and Thompson blames Meredith for screwing things up. She sets the train on fire and both of them are forced to jump as the contents explode.
Angela is preparing supper when Linderman comes to visit. He says he has a shred of morality and refuses to let Arthur destroy her. She doesn’t know what he means and he offers to heal the scars of the damage Arthur has done to her mind. She refuses to hear anything bad against her husband but Linderman offers her the chance to know the truth. She agrees and recovers her memories, and realizes what Arthur has in mind for Nathan.
As Meredith and Thompson leave the site of the train explosion, she explains that the Company killed her baby daughter. Thompson realizes that the Company lied to her and cuts her free, telling her to go before he changes his mind. Down below, Claire Bennett runs through the burning wreck and rescues a fireman.
Gabriel and Elle are having dinner and she suggests they go out. There’s a knock on the door and Elle lets in Trevor, who she says she contacted from Gabriel’s list. She wants Gabriel to meet others with powers and has Trevor demonstrate his power to shatter objects by pointing at them. Elle steps out while Noah watches.
Angela and Arthur enjoy supper and Arthur notices something is wrong. She wonders if he would know her without his power, and he realizes his telepathy has been negated. The Haitian steps in behind him and Arthur realizes what’s happening. He says he knows her like he knows his own heart and she asks him if he thinks she’s going to kill him or kiss him.
As Trevor demonstrates his ability, Elle fawns over him and Gabriel telekinetically slams him against the wall. He tells Elle to leave and when she refuses, she electrically stuns him. She tells him he doesn’t need to do this and slams her against a wall, then tells her to get out. Gabriel then immobilizes Trevor again and cuts pen his skull telekinetically. Elle runs outside where Noah is watching Gabriel uses his abilities. Gabriel finishes and runs out.
Angela challenges Arthur on how he’s lost his vision and his humanity, and she isn’t willing to sacrifice Nathan. He insists that he hasn’t changed… and then collapses from the poison Angela put in his supper. She has the Haitian prepare to dispose of Arthur when Nathan arrives and sees his father’s body. Nathan assumes he’s had a heart attack and calls the EMTs.
Noah informs his superiors that they’re almost done but have one more thing to do. Elle is angry that they’ve created a monster, but Noah says they’re not mercenaries. He tells her that they follow orders as Company agents. Noah then spots Mohinder driving a taxi and gets in with him as he lets Peter off.
Angela and Nathan are at the hospital and Dr. Livitz informs them that Arthur is dead. Angela orders a cremation and Livitz sends them both home and says they’ll deal with the paperwork later. Angela turns to Nathan for comfort. Meanwhile, Livitz goes in and informs Arthur that it’s done. Arthur telepathically tells the doctor to fake a corpse for the cremation, but Livitz warns that paralysis brought on by the poison is permanent.
Nathan and Peter attend the funeral at their home, and Angela tells them not to idolize Arthur, and that he was deeply flawed.
In the present, Hiro comes out of his trance and determines that they must warn Nathan and Angela that Arthur is alive. They hear a scream and run out to see Usutu lying on the ground, decapitated. Hiro sees Usutu’s head nearby and looks around to see Arthur. Arthur grabs Hiro’s head and Hiro screams.
