The Eclipse, Part 1 - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Arthur is doing more precognitive sketches: Nathan and Peter falling toward a jungle; Sylar and Elle kissing; Matt, Hiro, and Ando in a cornfield; Noah holding a bleeding Claire.

Angela considers a family photo and looks out the window toward the approaching eclipse.

Hiro and Ando look at the issue of 9th Wonders! which ends with an eclipse.

At Pinehearst, Sylar is testing the lightning power he obtained from Elle and says he needs to prove himself. When she wonders who, he says she wouldn’t understand. Arthur comes in to ask Sylar to find Claire Bennet. Sylar immediately agrees and Elle insists she should go with him, as it’s what she was raised to do. Sylar thought she let it all behind her, but Elle say it’s all she knows. Arthur agrees it’s a good pairing.

At Primatech, Angela tells Claire that Nathan is going to find the Haitian and Matt Parkman is locating Hiro. Claire’s role is to not get caught. Claire says she can do more but Angela says she’s to go into hiding. Angela lets her into Level 5 where Eric Doyle and Danny Pine are confined. Angela has another plan, and Noah comes in and says hello to his daughter.

Peter insist on going to Haiti with Nathan, and explains that the Haitian is there looking for a Level 5 escapee, Baron Samedi, who is into slavery, drug trafficking, and kidnapping. Peter admits he’s not sure what this purpose is without his powers, and insists that going with Nathan will help him find it. Nathan reluctantly agrees and they fly toward Haiti.

Mohinder is dissecting his test subject and notices that his hands are mutating further. He goes to see Arthur and says he needs the catalyst to cure himself. Arthur warns that their plans might be for nothing and shows him the sketch of a dead Claire. He says it’s going to happen tomorrow and Mohinder insists that it’s impossible. Arthur asks how it could happen and Mohinder says that the eclipse occurred last time when the powers manifested. He doesn’t know what it means, but if Claire dies then the catalyst dies with her and he wont’ be cured. Arthur shows him another sketch of himself in a cocoon, and warns that today everything changes.

Matt and Daphne go to Matt’s apartment to find his file on Kaito Nakamura’s murder so he can obtain Hiro’s phone number. Daphne is concerned that Arthur will come after her and strip her of her power. She also believes she betrayed Matt and he assures her she’s now a good guy. She asks if he trusts her and he says he does. She wonders why and he explains that he saw their future in his spirit walk and will protect her. Daphne wonders how they’ll find Hiro and there’s a pounding on the door. Hiro and Ando are outside. Ando shows them the 9th Wonders! comic books, which shows them coming to Matt for help. He explains that Hiro has mentally regressed to the age of 10. Hiro has to use the bathroom. Daphne, unimpressed, figures they’re all going to die.

Noah takes Claire to Stephen Canfield’s house, a simple set-up where he can control things. Claire comments about his desire to control everything and accuses him of worrying about her only as a catalyst. He insists that he’s interested in her as herself, not as a catalyst.

Matt tries to read Hiro’s minds but can’t understand as Hiro’s thoughts are in Japanese. Daphne notes that the last time she saw Ando, he was “dead,” and he refers to her as “nemesis.” She says she’s a good guy now and Matt admits he can’t help Hiro. He thinks Hiro can still help them given how powerful he is, but Hiro is busy playing with Matt’s turtle. Daphne says she’s leaving, because she sensed a pause when he said he trusted her. He readers a mind and realizes her home is in Lawrence, KS. She superspeeds away and Hiro yells “Cool!”

Sylar assures Arthur via cell phone that he has the situation under control. He goes into a car rental place where Elle is waiting. Sylar tells her that they know Noah has Claire and thinks that’s a good thing: he knows how Noah thinks. Elle is concerned that he’s suddenly so obedient and responsible. He wonders where the rental guy is and Elle tells him that she told the agent that she said Sylar was a serial killer who kidnapped her. She says that they can do and take whatever they want. He grabs her and starts to leave, but the agent comes out with a rifle. Elle pretends to be a damsel in distress and Sylar says that he doesn’t understand what’s going on. Elle taunts Sylar, asking who he really is. The rental agent hits Sylar in the face with the rifle butt, and Hiro glares at him, the wound on his forehead healing.

At Pinehearst, Mohinder is making a voice log entry wondering about the eclipse and how it affects them. He admits that he’s changing and can’t control it. He starts coughing and more adhesive fluid oozes from his hands.

In the Canfield house, Noah tears up a board from the floor and tells Claire to hit him as part of her training. She says she’s done fine but he says she’s been acting like a stupid, careless girl, who can’t get hurt. She says she’s been doing fine and accuses him of leaving her. He tells her again to hit him and she takes a swing, which he easily blocks and then reverses to put her in a chokehold. He analyzes her attack and tells her to start again.

Traci calls Arthur and tells him that Nathan is going to get the Haitian. Arthur warns that he may be putting himself in harm’s way and there’s nothing he can do about it. He orders her to go to Parris Island to recruit a small army. When she initially refuses, he says that if she doesn’t obey him then Nathan won’t get to the White House. Angela comes in and Traci quickly hangs up and leave.

Hiro is reading 9th Wonders! as Matt tells Ando that Daphne is scared and he needs to find out why. Ando insists they need to help Hiro but Matt says it will only take a minute. Hiro holds up the comic, which shows them in a corn field in Lawrence, KS. Hiro concentrates and teleports them all there. As they approach the farm house, the eclipse begins.

Arthur throws all of the sketches on the floor.

Mohinder cocoons himself to the wall of his laboratory.

Angela looks at the family photo.

Nathan and Peter fall out of the sky over Haiti and land in a river.

Sylar puts the dead car rental agent into the back of a stolen rental car, then drives off with Elle.

Claire beats on a column in the Canfield home as Noah looks on in approval.

Mohinder wakes up within his cocoon and pulls himself out. He goes to a mirror and realizes that the mutation has disappeared.

Nathan and Peter pull themselves out of the river and Nathan admits he doesn’t know what happened, but he still can’t fly. Peter remembers the eclipse on the first day they flew and wonders if there’s a connection, but Nathan wonders if it’s the Haitian. They start off into the jungle. They find voodoo pwen, which Peter identifies as “messengers,” prayers for salvation and redemption. Peter has the location of the Haitian’s village on the map but Nathan insists he saw it in a different direction from when he was falling. Peter follows him.

Matt knocks on the farmhouse door and talks to Daphne’s father. Her father claims she isn’t there but Matt insists and Daphne calls out, telling him to go away. Matt tries to use his powers as Hiro and Ando look on. However, nothing happens. Daphne’s father goes inside and Matt talks to the others. Hiro realizes his powers are gone as well. Inside, Mr. Millbrook talks to Daphne, who is sitting on the bed. She doesn’t want to talk about Matt and says she just wanted to come home. She admits she isn’t feeling okay and says it’s happening again. Mr. Millbrook admits he’s sorry and goes to get something for her.

Peter and Nathan come to a ravine and Nathan says they need to double back. Peter asks him if he’s going to admit he’s wrong and that Nathan needs to stop treating him like an idiot kid brother. Nathan says he only bought Peter along to protect his ego, and says he’s been bailing Peter out all his life. Peter accuses Nathan of lacking a spine, and letting Arthur manipulate him. He tells Nathan he’s seen the future where Nathan does what Arthur wants. Nathan says he’s trying to stop Arthur now. As he heads out, the Haitian arrives and tells them to remain silent.

Claire is tiring and Noah tells her to focus her anger and swing at him. He provokes into talking about how she felt when he leaves, and she smashes his leg. She goes out for some air but Elle comes in and tries to use her lightning powers. They don’t work and Noah draws his gun. Sylar comes up behind them and tries to use his powers but nothing happens. Noah and Sylar struggle for the gun, which slides across the floor. Noah dislocates Sylar’s shoulder while Elle grabs the gun and prepares to shoot Noah. Claire leaps in the path of the bullet and is shot in the chest. Noah knocks Elle unconscious and picks up Claire, carrying her out. Sylar grabs the gun and tries to shoot him but passes out from the pain.

Noah takes Claire back to their home and Sandra insists they go to the hospital. Noah warns they’ll call the police for a gunshot wound and says they can deal with it. Sandra agrees and goes to medical supplies. Claire admits that she was stupid and careless, but is happy that at least she can feel pain.

Hiro is still unable to use his powers and Matt wonders if Arthur stole their powers. Hiro says that Matt must save Daphne. When Matt says he can’t, Hiro starts throwing ears of corns at Matt. Hiro says it’s part of the Hero’s Quest, to triumph without powers. He insists Matt can’t doubt and Matt finally catches one of the ears. Inspired, Matt goes back to the house. Hiro says that he has to get his powers back and he has a plan. He and Ando start walking down the road and Ando notes they’ve reached the end of the comic. Hiro insists there’s a place in every town and city where wise men gather and he knows of a place nearby.

Mohinder determines that all of the effects of the formula have disappeared from his body and suggests further study… but not yet. He brings up Maya’s address on the computer and prepares to go to her. Flint and Arthur arrive and tell him he’s not going anywhere. Arthur wants Mohinder to get everyone’s abilities back. Mohinder warns the eclipse’s effects might be irreversible. Flint grabs him and slams him into a wall, saying he refuses to go back to being a nobody.

Hiro and Ando arrive at a Sam’s Comics in Lawrence and Hiro realizes it’s a Wednesday, the day when new comics arrive. He asks for the new issue of 9th Wonders!, and clerks Sam and Frack recognize Hiro from the cover of the comic.

The Haitian leads Nathan and Peter through the jungle and Nathan says they need his help against Arthur. The Haitian is surprised that Arthur is alive and says that he has lost his ability as well. He refuses to go with them until he stops Baron Samedi… his brother. He explains that Samedi’s skin is impenetrable to physical harm and many people believe he’s a god. Samedi has formed an army and the Haitian stopped him once. Peter offers their help, noting the Haitian helped their family. Nathan dismisses his belief as stupid but Peter notes that the Haitian isn’t coming with them until he stops his brother. Soldiers open fire on them and they flee through the woods. The soldiers capture Nathan but Peter and the Haitian escape. Samedi arrives and reveals that Arthur warned him about Nathan. Samedi knocks Nathan out and tells his soldiers to take him away.

Noah looks after Claire as she rests, and says he loves her. He leaves and Sandra tells him not to abandon their daughter. He says that he has something important he needs to finish.

After Mr. Millbrook leaves the farm, Matt goes up to the door and knocks. He explains through the door that he loves Daphne and refuses to leave until he talks to her. Matt says he knows who she is and the spirit walk doesn’t matter, he refuses to give up on her because he’s in love with her. Daphne tells him to come in.

Elle pops Sylar’s shoulder back into place and he tries to use his [[telekinesis]] again and fails. Sylar admits that he doesn’t understand anything now and they’re just human. He chuckles and admits it’s a relief not to feel the hunger any more. He hasn’t felt normal since he first met her. Elle says it’s her fault she pushed him to become a monster but he say she was just following orders. She says they can’t take what they want any more and he grabs her and kisses her.

Outside, Noah zeroes in on them with a sniper rifle and prepares to take the shot.
