Peter, Matt, and Mohinder meet at a motel in Costa Verde. Matt has a drug prepared to give to Noah to weaken his willpower so Matt can telepathically interrogate him. They slip the drug to Noah as he drinks at a bar and then take him out, claiming he's drunk. They take him back to their motel room and Matt starts to probe his memories.
Five weeks ago: Noah meet with Angela, who gives him severance pay and a gold watch. She believes that Primatech's work is done and now wants to put her family back together. She advises Noah to do the same, but he wonders what he'll do without his life's goal.
The present: Mohinder begins to have second thoughts but Matt insists on pushing things as far as he can.
Danko calls Nathan away from a state dinner to tell him that Noah has failed to check in on schedule. He starts calling up surveillance tapes and Nathan wonders if he's monitoring everyone on the team. Danko admits he is and notes that no one is above scrutiny.
As Matt prepares to scan Noah again, Mohinder wonders if he's seeking revenge for Daphne's death. Matt insists that that he isn't and warns they need what's in Noah's head to fight back. Peter sides with him and Matt continues the interrogation.
Four weeks ago: Noah is at home with his wife, working on crossword puzzles, when Nathan pays him a visit in private. Nathan tells him of his plans to use the government to round up people with abilities as the first step to confining them until they can find a cure. Nathan sees himself as a hero but Noah warns that Claire and the others with abilities will see him as a villain. Nathan admits that he's willing to suffer that penalty, and wants Nathan to tell him how he managed to capture special persons for 20 years without powers. Noah takes him to a storage facility and shows Nathan the 20 years' worth of weapons, money, and files that he's stockpiled. He offers to help Nathan and admits that he's bored.
The present: Matt tells the others that Noah and Nathan started the program. Mohinder has second thoughts and Matt wonders if he wants to be captured as punishment for the evil he did during his mutation stage. Mohinder wonders what they can gain from Noah's memories and Matt writes down the combination for the storage facility room. Peter takes it and flies there to get the equipment. However, Danko and his men are monitoring the room with a hidden surveillance camera. Danko tells Nathan about the intrusion and they figure that Noah has been captured. Danko sends in a squad of local men but Peter blinds them with a flash-bang grenade and escapes by flying away.
Noah warns Matt that Danko will have captured Peter by now and they'll trace him back to the hotel. Matt scans his mind to learn whom he's working for.
Three weeks ago: As workers set up Building 26, Nathan introduces Noah to Danko. Noah, believing he's in charge, attempts to initiate Company protocol and create teams of one human and one special, but Danko tells him they'll rely strictly on humans. When Noah objects, Danko points out that the Company didn't succeed. As Danko leaves, Noah questions Nathan who admits that they've had to make some compromises and Noah won't be running the government operation.
Next, Noah goes to see Mohinder, who is working as a cab driver. He wants Mohinder to help him for when the government operation inevitably goes bad.
The present: When Matt reveals what he's learned, Mohinder tries to explain. He claims that he believed Noah's offer was a trick and the others wouldn't believe him after what he'd done. The two fight and shatter a mirror before Mohinder subdues Matt. They realize that Noah has used a piece of broken mirror to cut himself free and has fled. They go after Noah, who breaks open a car and tries to hot-wire it. Before he can succeed, Peter arrives and recaptures him. They tie him up with duct tape this time and Noah warns them that they're running out of time. Matt tells Peter about Mohinder and then starts reading Noah's mind again to learn who's in charge.
Three weeks ago: Noah pays Danko a visit at the latter's barren apartment and offers him a drink. He tries to bond with Danko but the soldier warns him that he has no intent of losing his focus the way Noah has. Noah, unimpressed, observes that Danko has cut himself off from everyone but he'll need to understand their targets. Danko, equally unimpressed, asks Noah if he's with him or against him, and Noah says he'll obey orders.
The present: Matt gives Peter Danko's address. Noah warns that they're in over their heads but Peter flies there. Meanwhile, the government capture team has found the motel and notifies Danko, at home, that they're moving in. Peter arrives and holds him at gunpoint, unaware that Danko is under surveillance as well. Danko puts his head to the gun barrel and dares Peter to shoot him so that he can become a martyr. Nathan arrives only a minute or so after Peter and Danko wonders how he got there so fast. Nathan confirms Danko's claim that if Peter kills the soldier, that will give the government the reason they need to kill specials rather than capture them. Peter shoots Danko in the arm but flies away. Danko reestablishes contact with his men in Costa Verde and tells them to move in.
Two days ago: Noah examines the casualties from the aftermath of the plane crash and finds Daphne, badly injured from her shoulder wound. Noah orders an increased dosage of sedative to keep her docile and to fight the pain.
The present: Mohinder takes out a few soldiers but the rest bring him down. Matt prepares to kill Noah, who warns him that doing so will only escalate the entire situation. The soldiers break in and Matt reluctantly surrenders. Noah tells the soldiers not to hurt Matt and walks Matt out. However, as they go outside Peter drops a flash-bang and uses the distraction to fly away with Matt.
Mohinder is secured at Building 26 and Noah visits him to explain what happened. He insists Mohinder and the others were simply going to be imprisoned until a cure could be found. Mohinder doesn't believe him, and Nathan warns that if he doesn't help, then his superiors will order their deaths, starting with the still-captive Daphne and then everyone else.
Danko suggests that Noah takes a few days off after his capture but Noah insists that he no longer has a life to return to. He insists that he's ready to work with Danko without distractions. Danko considers him and says that Nathan is the one who interfered with the operation by ordering a capture rather than a kill. Noah agrees that they have to put a stop to that. However, once Danko leaves, Noah meets with Angela in a nearby park. He claims that Danko trusts him but Angela warns that it won't be that easy. She tells Noah that he's going to have to do horrible things to gain and keep Danko's trust. Noah admits that he's comfortable in a morally gray area, gives her the retirement watch back, and walks away.
At Mohinder's apartment in New York City, Matt is sketching himself with explosives. When he snaps out of his precognitive trance, he draws back in horror. The final painting, done on the floor, shows Washington D.C. going up in flames.
