Into Asylum - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Nathan and Claire check into a hotel in Patzcuaro, Mexico. Nathan plans to make some calls to deal with Danko and hopes that he can’t reach them there. Claire goes for a walk despite Nathan’s warning that they need to stay together.

In New York City, Peter flies with Angela to a church. She insists it’s where she needs to be and goes inside. Peter hesitates and then follows her in.

Danko and Noah travel to Arlington, VA, and meet with Jenkins, one of Danko’s agents. Their target, a teacher named James Martin, killed the other three experienced members of Jenkins’ team, shooting each one in the back of the head at close range. Noah asks what information they have on Martin, but Danko says they don’t need to know. Noah points out Danko’s men didn’t know what they were going into and it got them killed. Danko isn’t convinced and says that Noah needs a major capture to prove himself since Nathan’s power was revealed. Danko goes outside to his SUV and Sylar appears from the back seat. He offers an alliance, noting that Danko interests him and Danko needs someone with Sylar’s experience in dealing with special powers. Sylar offers to find Martin, but Danko tries to draw on him. Sylar escapes before Danko can turn around and watches from a nearby rooftop as the government soldier drives away.

Back at Building 26, Danko mobilizes his people to find Martin, then admits to Noah that he needs a win as well. Noah insists that they need someone with powers and that Danko has done the same thing in the past, turning the natives against each other. Noah suggests they go after Sylar, who he thinks is somewhere in Washington. Danko says he wants Noah to go after someone else: Angela Petrelli.

Claire finds Nathan drinking in a cantina. She shows him the money she made selling the necklace that Noah gave her as a gift. Nathan, partially drunk, tells her she should be thanking him for giving her the “free pass” from Danko and his men. Unimpressed, Claire asks why he helped her but Nathan refuses to answer. Instead he takes the money and goes over to some college boys from the States who are drinking heavily.

Angela sits in a pew at the church and explains to Peter that she hasn’t slept in a long time, but that’s the only way she can acquire precognitive dreams. She talks about bringing Peter to the church for his baptism and holding his hand, then wonders if God can forgive her for everything she’s done since then.

Nathan challenges the college students to a drinking contest for money. Last one standing takes the pot. Claire tries to convince him to stop but he insists they need the money and he’s going to provide it.

Jenkins arrives at Danko’s office and thanks him for his inspirational speech. A cell phone ring and Danko finds it in a delivery box that he hasn’t noticed before. As Jenkins leaves, Danko answers the phone and Sylar tells him that he delivered the package. It contains another of Martin’s victims. Danko opens it: inside is Jenkins’ head. Danko realize that the “Jenkins” that just left his office is Martin, and that the man is a shapeshifter. He and his men chase Martin into the parking garage. As he runs, Martin bumps into a janitor and gets away. A few steps later, his face begins to change and he changes his shape into that of the janitor. He quickly ditches Jenkins’ clothing and merges with the crowd outside, evading pursuit.

Peter goes to the church’s charity box and brings back a coat for his mother. She says that it’s her coat and she donated it a week ago, but that it wasn’t a sign of devotion: just her giving an object. She apologizes for not comforting Peter during all the times when he had trouble growing up, and for not telling him the truth about his abilities. She wonders if Peter still hates her, and he says that he doesn’t and that she’s his mother no matter what.

Only Nathan and one boy are left. Claire tries to get Nathan to stop. He refuses and then passes out. As the last boy prepares to collect the pot, Claire flirts with him and then challenges him. She offers Nathan’s watch to sweeten the pot. He points out that he’s had a lot more drinks then she has, and she quickly starts drinking to catch up.

Sylar goes to Martin’s house and finds Danko waiting for him. Danko figures that Sylar wants Martin’s shapeshifting ability, which would prove particularly useful. Sylar taunts Danko, warning that his regeneration makes him difficult to kill. Danko knows the precise spot to injure to kill Sylar, and prepares to shoot. Sylar says he can not only help him capture Martin but the remaining specials at large as well. Once Danko has done that, he can shoot Sylar if he wants. Danko thinks about it, then agrees.

As Angela prays, Peter approaches the altar and ask God if He’s listening, and if He even cares that they’re on the run for their lives. Peter lights a candle but the wind from the door opens it; government agents have arrived. Peter grabs Angela and hustles her into a confessional.

Sylar examines Martin’s apartment looking for clues. He points out to Danko that Martin could have left the city but is staying for some reason. Sylar points out that while Martin at least had a pretend life, Danko has little nothing in his apartment, or in his life. They find a collection of uniforms and Sylar concludes that they all belong to identifies of people with power, and that Martin likes to assume the form of people with that power. Looking further, Sylar finds photos Martin in different bodies, each with a different beautiful woman. He figures that Martin is looking for love as well as power, and they find a matchbox for the Garden of Evil singles bar.

As Claire drinks with his opponent, he admits his parents are divorced and can understand Claire’s problems with Nathan. She says that Nathan is trying to be a good guy, but she’d rather he act like a normal human being. Finally the boy passes out and Claire, perfectly sober, collects her winnings, picks up Nathan, and hauls him out.

As they wait to see if the agents find them, Angela tells Peter that she was once young and hopeful, but then her power manifested. She tried to tell people of the dreams she had but no one believed her, so she turned to manipulation and lies. Now she’s lost everything, but she had no choice if she wanted to save the world. The door rattles as someone tries the knob but then gives up. Peter and Angela look out, and see Noah outside. He nods to them and then tells the agents that the booth is clear.

Danko and Sylar search the club and spot… “Danko,” hitting on a woman. Sylar, amused, notes that Martin is doing better with women in Danko’s body then Danko does. Danko isn’t amused. Martin spots them and leaves, and Danko and Sylar separate to try and corner him.

Nathan manages to fly back to their hotel room, and he figures out that Claire’s regeneration heals her liver so she can’t get drunk. He apologies for messing up and that initially he tried to deny there was a problem between them. Since then he tried to keep his distance, but wanted to earn her love so obtained a free pass for her. Nathan says that he’s going to fix the situation and make amends to his family. He passes out on the bed and Claire gently covers him over.

Sylar and Danko meet back up and admit that they’ve lost Martin. As they go outside, Danko draws his gun, turns and shoots Sylar. As “Sylar” collapses to the ground, the real Sylar comes up. Danko says that he only wounded Martin, then asks if Sylar can use his ability without slicing open Martin’s head. Smiling, Sylar kneels next to the wounded man and reaches for him.

Nathan wakes up in the morning and thanks Claire for helping him. When she asks what he’s going to do, he admits that he was drunk and doesn’t know of anything he can do. He’s on the run and all of his friends and allies have abandoned him. Nathan admits that everything is out of his control but Claire explains that she thought Nathan could fly, and do anything. Nathan has nothing to say for himself and Claire leaves, disgusted.

Later, Angela finds Peter at the church and says that she was finally able to sleep... and dream. She looks up at the stained glass window and then says that she’s seen that they need to bring the family together. After that, they need to meet with the sister that Peter never knew she had.

Claire is preparing to get on a bus back to the States when Nathan comes up. She explains that she’s heading back to San Diego. Nathan shows her the necklace, and explains he sold his watch to buy her necklace back. He puts it on her and says he’s going back to do what he can. He invites her along and the two of them leave, together.

Noah goes to the club where Danko and a female medical technician are taking care of “Sylar’s” body. There’s a piece of metal embedded in his skull, seemingly killing him for good. Noah appears satisfied that Sylar is dead for good.

Angela and Peter leave the church… together.

Danko and the female technician get into Danko’s SUV. The “technician” concentrates, and Sylar shifts back to his normal form. Danko asks what he felt seeing himself dead, and Sylar admits it was cathartic. As they leave, Danko warns Sylar that if they succeed, he’ll be the last one left. Sylar admits that’s what he expects, and it’s funny how it works that way.
