Horatio joins the Royal Navy at seventeen, a bit old to start a Naval career. Although he started out behind the other midshipmen he has a good mind for navigation. What he doesn't take to is the bullying from one particularly nasty chap. One thing leads to another, and that leads to a duel.

Episode Quotes

Captain Pellew: Whatever mask he may hide behind, a Frenchman is still a Frenchman and we will beat him as we have always beaten him!

Hornblower: My name's Hornblower.
Cleveland: What an infernal piece of bad luck for you.

Captain Keene: The son of a Doctor. Hah! You would have done better to choose a Lord as your father if you wanted to make a career in His Majesty's navy.

Clayton: (with gun to Simpson's head) Stand off, Jack, or I'll trim the walls with your brains.

Kennedy: Difficult to say who smells worse, the men or the beasts in the manger forward.
