The Play's the Thing - Recap

The scene opens with Victoria about to put on Crisco on her face. Victoria tells that she is delusional from lack of cosmetics. Joy mentions that they are going to a wine tasting later on and Victoria wonders if the Cleveland paparazzi are going to be there. Joy tells her that he is not going and that Victoria already called him twice. Elka enters dressed in black to which Joy asks if she’s gone Goth. Elka tells that she is going to a funeral. Saddened Joy asks who died. Elka doesn’t know because her friend and her like to crash funerals to meet men. Victoria tells Elka that she has Max to which Elka replies, “I may be tied to the fence but I still can bark at the cars.” Melanie and Pete come downstairs and they kiss. Melanie and Pete are like a young couple and Pete tells that he has to go off to work. Joy tells Victoria and Elka that she can’t wait until the pun stage ends and tells that she needs to get earplugs because she can hear them at night. Victoria tells that she could borrow hers because of an owl that keeps her up. Joy tells that the owl is Melanie and Pete. They laugh and Melanie tells that she can’t go to the wine tasting because she is going hiking. Melanie apologizes for canceling and comments on how Pete pretended to read her Miranda Rights by saying “You have the right to remain adorable”. Elka tells that they are turning against Melanie.

Zack Adams comes in and gives Victoria her cosmetics and says that the mailman got the addresses mixed up and that he probably is smoking weed. He compliments Victoria and tells that he is a fan. He asks Victoria is she could help out in their school play “Romeo and Juliet” because the soccer coach is doubling as the drama teacher and he wants to put their character names on the back of their outfits. Victoria tells that she hates jocks and Joy tells that Victoria was married to a wide receiver to which Victoria replies that she still doesn’t know what sport that is. She agrees to help. At the school, Victoria is giving acting advice to the kids and tells them to never give up. The coach, treating it like a team, tells them to take a knewe and tells them that they are going to have to do great for their parents. Victoria tells that she can see what Zack is dealing with and Zack tells that he can’t talk to her because the coach will make him do “boy” pushups. At the movies, Joy is already there and a man walks over and asks if the seat next to Joy is taken. She tells it is because she is waiting for a friend. He walks off. Back at the house, Melanie and Pete are watching the Bachelorette instead of Melanie being at the movies with Joy.

Joy is at the movies and attempt to tell the guy she turned down a seat that it is available but he has already found a different seat. Victoria is at the school and the coach is drilling the students with rehearsal and they seem tense. Victoria is with Zack and Zack’s girlfriend, to which Zack is not happy about, Gina is there. Victoria offers her acting skills to the coach and he doesn’t want them. He tells that the kids just need a kick in the butt. Victoria tells the coach that he is wrong and the coach tells Victoria to direct the play. The next morning, Joy gets her eyebrow waxing kit out and tells Elka that she is waxing Melanie’s eyebrows. Elka tells that Melanie has not treated Joy like a friend and Joy tells that she understands that Melanie has a new boyfriend. Joy starts to pluck Melanie’s eyebrows. Victoria comes in and tells that she is directing the play and that everyone is great except Juliet. Joy tells that she needs to put herself into the shoes of the untalented and to give the girl advice she tells that she has an idea. Melanie tells Joy she has dinner with Pete and his friends and has forgotten about Joy and her plans. Melanie tells that she would cancel on Pete but friends are important. Joy rips off the wax and accidently rips off the entire right eyebrow.

At the school, Victoria gives Juliet advice by telling her to imagine herself getting all the lines and moving around stage perfectly and tells her that she is a young Victoria Chase. But she doesn’t want to be Victoria Chase and tells that she quits. Zack has the initiative to try to “come out of the closet” to which his girlfriend tells him to wait until after Prom. Victoria wonders who will play Joy, Elka, and a one eyebrow Melanie enter the school for the play and Joy tells that she is sorry that she hurt Melanie but she had good reason to. Elka tells that Melanie has ostracized her friends because of her new boyfriend and acting like a teenager. Melanie apologizes and tells that she will do better. The play begins and Elka tells that she hates it already. But when Juliet turns around, it is Victoria. At the part where Romeo and Juliet kiss, everyone laughs because it is Victoria kissing a boy. Later at the restaurant, Victoria enters and they clap for her. They tell that she was great in it. Victoria tells that the school wants Victoria to stay as the drama teacher and everyone feels that would be great. Melanie gets a text from Pete saying that he wants to meet. But Melanie texts back and tells that she is spending the evening with the girls. Elka tells her not to mention that she looks like a hideous freak with no eyebrow.
