How I Met My Mother - Recap

The scene opens with Elka asking Joy to stand like the Statue of Liberty. She tells her dog to attack. Melanie comes in and asks what is going on. Joy tells that Elka is trying to get Dummy to attack her. Melanie says that his name is Chance now because Elka thought that the old name was holding him back. Melanie tells that there is a program at church where dogs are going to reenact Stories from the Bible. Joy tells that Elka can’t even get him to sit. Elka tells that she can and attempts to show her, but Chance doesn’t want to listen. Victoria comes in and tells she has a confession. She tells that she pen-paled an inmate in the prison and pretended to be Joy. She says that he got paroled and the last letter that he wrote was that he was going to track her down and get her. She says that she is sorry and Joy says that they need to be on the lookout and asks if they have a picture. Victoria says that she never asked for a picture of him, but she sent the picture of Joy in a see-through bikini. They get a call. The caller asks if Joy is there and then hangs up.

Later that night, Melanie and Victoria sneak downstairs and Melanie says that she thought she heard a sound. Melanie has sunscreen that she thought was her pepper spray and Victoria has a mirror to scare Gary, the ex-con, away with his reflection. Joy comes out and asks what is going on and Melanie sprays her with sunscreen. Elka comes out with a big gun and tells that it is a Polish pellet gun and Joy asks if it shoots backwards. Elka asks if she should be telling polish jokes when she has a gun. Joy tells that they don’t need any guns because she has a alarm guy coming in the morning. She tosses it and it goes off. The bullet shoots out the window and hits someone. They go outside to see who it is. The man says that his name is Owen and he is looking for his birth mother Joy. Nervous, Joy tells that it is Melanie. Afterward, Joy has Owen on her shoulder and Melanie asks why he fainted. She tells that all the men in her family faint at the sight of blood. She tells that Melanie has to pretend that she is her. Owen comes to and Melanie tries to talk like Joy, but it is not good at all. However, Owen buys it. Victoria pretends to be Melanie’s step-mother with her English accent and introduces herself as Lady Windchester. Joy tries her American accent and sounds like a guy. Joy tells them to stop and comes clean about being his mother. The ambulance comes and Joy tells Owen that things are not as crazy as they seem.

The next day, Melanie tells that Gary can’t leave Pennsylvania. There is someone at the door and the man asks for Joy. Thinking that he is from the alarm company, they invite him in. Melanie goes into the kitchen and plays a message from the alarm company telling that they are not going to be coming out today. Melanie realizes that the man out in the living room is not the Alarm Company, but rather Gary instead. She calls Victoria in and tells her the news. Elka comes in and asks what is going on. Melanie tells that they need to get out of there. However, Gary tells them that it is not a good idea. Meanwhile at the hospital, Joy tells Owen that she is really sorry about shooting him and Owen says that things didn’t work out the way he wanted it and says that it might have been a bad idea. However, Joy tells that they can work on that. Owen tells that it is best that they leave it alone and just say that they met each other. Back at the house, Gary asks where Joy is. Melanie tells that she is gone and tells him to not kill them. He says that he is not going to kill him and asks where they got the idea that he would. Victoria tells that is why he went to prison. However, Gary clarifies and says that it was for Auto Body Parts. Victoria comes clean that it was her who sent the letters and just put her picture with her writing. Gary feels betrayed and Victoria feels insulted that he is not interested in her.

Later, Joy comes home and Gary is crying on the couch. He tells that he didn’t picture this in this way. Joy yells and asks why it is always supposed to be the way people think it is and tells that she has to go. Elka tells Gary that he dodged a bullet. Victoria gives Susan Lucci’s number to Gary. Joy goes back to the hospital and tells that they need to get to know each other. They ask and answer questions and they get to know one another. Owen tells that he is an Actuary and Joy tells that she convinces celebrities that their brow is messed up. He asks why she gave him up and she tells that she was hoping that he was raised right and that they could be friends. They hug and Joy admits that she wants to be taken care of when she is old. Later, the girls get back from the church from Chance’s debut. Elka tells that he stole the baby Jesus. They get in and the alarm code is asked to be put in. Victoria tells that it was the year she was born, but the code is denied. She tells her to subtract 12 years and the alarm tells Victoria that it is accepted and that she looks nice today.
