Protestors have chained themselves to a truck at a coal mine. Troopers are holding off the miners, who object to the protestors interfering in their business. One of the protestors, Susan, passes out from dehydration, and the leader, Doug Swenson, agrees to free everyone. A trooper revives Susan but as Doug tries to get up, he collapses.
Cameron stops in to see Chase and tell them she has to cancel their vacation. She’s asked House to take on a case for her and wants to stay and make sure that House sticks with. Chase isn’t thrilled but Cameron assures her that she’ll leave with Chase once she’s sure House is on the case.
Cameron takes the case to the team and notes there are no abnormalities. they suspect that Doug is faking an illness but Cameron doesn’t believe it. House wonders if she’s trying to fill Kutner’s shoes and tells her to run the tests. As she does, Doug talks about the environment and then throws up.
House talks to Wilson about Cameron and his suspicions she is interested in House. House notices that Wilson is eating healthy. Wilson wonders if House is deflecting and notes that House is wearing the watch Kutner gave him as a gift. House insists that he’s over Kutner after his death.
The team wonders if House is trying to get Cameron back so she ca mother him after Kutner’s death, and Cameron reports on the vomiting. House orders heart test and again tells Cameron to do it. As she runs the test, Doug starts to hiccups and explains he’s been doing it for the last week. Chase stops by but Cameron says that she thinks the hiccups are suspicious. Chase wonders if she’s avoiding him and Cameron says she has a reason to stay on the case but she can’t explain. Chase accepts that... for now.
Cameron reports to House, who notes that he isn’t her boss and wonders why she’s taking orders from him. He asks if she has the hots for him and Cameron denies it, and House figures that there’s some reason other than the obvious. Cameron takes control of the differential with House’s approval and Taub suggests MS. House orders Cameron to do a lumbar puncture to confirm and tells her to find a way despite the hiccups. Foreman agrees to help her and he wonders why she’s choosing House over Chase.
Chase talks to Cuddy about House filling Kutner’s slot., and Cuddy says Cameron hasn’t mentioned anything. Chase asks if she thinks Cameron is in love with House, and then asks if she’s in love with House. Cuddy says both are ridiculous but Chase notes she didn’t answer either question.
House raids the refrigerator and discovers Wilson’s new lunch: kale. Doug’s wife Franni arrives and House notes it took her 18 hours to get there and Doug didn’t say anything about having a wife. She says she had to find a sitter for their son, which Doug didn’t say he had a son either. House goes to Cameron and accuses her of spying for Wilson, but she points out Wilson could spy on his own. He’s interrupted when Doug’s neck starts to swell due to leakage from the lungs.
Thirteen suggests an auto-immune firestorm caused by systemic sclerosis caused by exposure to solvents, and House tells Thirteen and Taub to take over from Cameron. House wants to see where Cameron goes when she can’t be attending to Doug. Cuddy asks why Cameron is still there then asks her if she’s in love with House. Cameron figures that Cuddy views her as intruding on her territory.
As the team give Doug steroids, Franni asks when Doug is going to stop protesting, and wonders why he hates her and their 4-year-old son. Doug says that just because their son is biologically related doesn’t mean that he should care for him more.
House goes to see Wilson, who figures he’s there to check out his kitchen. House figures that Wilson views Kutner’s death as a sign that he should eat healthy. Wilson points out he has ice cream, chips, and bacon in his refrigerator. Before House can pursue the matter, Foreman calls to report that Doug is suffering from pain in his leg. House figures it’s an infection that they made worse with the steroids and orders new lower-body x-rays. Once he hangs up, Wilson wonders why House thinks he would have hid his diet change. House just eats some chips in his face.
Thirteen and Taub check Doug’s life and Thirteen wants to talk about the fact Foreman shut her out after Kutner died. Taub notes that’s how men are, but then observes that Doug’s femur bone is broken despite the fact he was lying in bed. Back in differential, House orders chemo for possible contamination. They take Doug to surgery where Chase prepares to set the bone, and Foreman comes in to tell him to do a bone biopsy. Chase realizes that Cameron is no longer on the case.
House goes to see Cameron and wonders why she cares. He figures that she’s trying to separate herself from Chase. Cameron admits that she found the engagement ring Chase is going to give her and she doesn’t want him to ask right now. She figures if Chase proposes, it’s because he’s scared and seeking comfort after Kutner’s death.
House is seeing a wife who is trying to hide the fact she’s having an affair. Cuddy comes in to ask about Cameron and House says she’s not interested. House tries to deduce why but Cuddy slips away. House is forced to admit that the wife got a skin infection from a crowded hot tub.
Foreman analyzes the bone biopsy and concludes there was no contamination. He checks Doug’s leg and discovers that he’s bleeding out. Irradiation will destroy Doug’s immune system, but Taub suggests they make his cancer worse via insulin-like injection so they can find and remove it. House agrees and orders them to proceed. He then goes to see Wilson and admits he’s been wrong about Kutner and Cameron, and Taub came up with an idea he should have had. House wonders if he’s losing his mind and Wilson points out sometimes there is no reason and House would be crazy not to be distracted.
Franni isn’t thrilled with the new treatment but Doug admits he’s exposed himself to a lot of contaminants. He insists he wants his life to mean something, then his heart stops. They manage to revive him.
Chase goes to see Cameron and wants to know why she doesn’t trust him with the truth. She asks for a little more time but Chase refuses, believing she doesn’t want him. he tells her to let him know when he can pick up his thing and walks away.
The team goes back to differential but everyone’s out of ideas. House tells them to open Doug up and put in a defibrillator so he can live long enough for them to finish a new round of tests. House then goes to Wilson to bounce some ideas off of him. First he notices that Wilson has put money in a vending machine but hasn’t ordered. He concludes that Wilson is eating healthy to get House to stop mooching food from him. Wilson admits that it’s true that he was screwing with him, and he finally figured out that after Amber died, he had to get back normal. Now he thinks House needs to do the same. House just smiles, but then gets an idea.
House goes to see Doug as Taub explains the procedure to him, and the fact he can’t protest near hospitals. House believes he has a commercially-grown plant in their house, but Doug and Franni insist they don’t. House concludes that all marriages suck and Doug doesn’t love Franni any more. Doug explains he missed dinner with her to go to a rally, and he bought roses. When he got home, she was gone and he threw away the roses. Doug got a sporotrichosis infection from the rose thorns, which they inadvertently spread with their treatments.
House goes to see Cameron and tells her that Doug is cured and heading off for another protest. He suggests that Cameron has lost one husband and Kutner’s death is causing her to reconsider her new long-term relationship. House tells her that she’s trying to force Chase to dump her.
Cameron goes to see Chase and explains she found the engagement ring. She admits she didn’t want him to propose because of a knee-jerk reaction to Kutner’s death. Cameron ends up proposing that he propose to her. Chase considers the matter, then kneels and proposes to her.
Franni kisses Doug on the forehead and leaves.
Wilson orders some food and House mooches from his plate.
Chase and Cameron give Cuddy the news.
House sits at home and plays the piano… then hallucinates Amber congratulating him on not losing it.
