Unfaithful - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A priest, Daniel Beeson, works at a soup kitchen. After they close for the night, Beeson sends his assistant Emily home and cleans up. A homeless man, Daryl, comes by and begs for a coat against the winter cold. Once Beeson finds one and sends him on the way, he goes up to his apartment where he drinks heavily. He hears a knock downstairs and goes to find that he has a unique visitor: Jesus, bleeding from his wounds and hanging in mid-air before the priest.

As House arrives at the hospital, Cuddy invites him to her foster daughter's Jewish naming ceremony. House declines, saying the whole thing is hypocrisy. He goes on to the ER to pick up the file on Beeson, who House is interested in because of the religious connotations to the case. After verbally sparring with Cameron, who is back to her own duties after her brief job trying to rein House in, House has his team run a differential. They figure that the Jesus-sighting was a hallucination brought on by alcohol and figure House wants to either screw with them or the priest. House just smiles and tells them to test Daniel and take toxicity samples at the soup kitchen. As Thirteen and Foreman start to go, House calls them back and tells them that if one of them doesn't quit, he'll fire one of them. They have until they resolve Beeson's case to decide.

As Taub and Kutner test Beeson, they go over his file and note he's moved from parish to parish. Beeson explains that he was accused of molesting a child, Ryan, and was then transferred repeatedly. Taub suggests that syphilis could cause the hallucination but Beeson insists he was innocent and hasn't sex with anyone else. When Kutner wonders if Beeson actually saw Jesus, Beeson admits that he doesn't believe in Jesus.

House gets wind that Wilson is going to Cuddy's ceremony. He tells Wilson to avoid the whole thing, but Wilson wonders why Cuddy invited House knowing that he'd decline. Meanwhile, Foreman and Thirteen consider House's ultimatum and they figure that it's another of House's game, and Foreman insists that they call House's bluff.

House and Taub both figure that Beeson is guilty of child molestation but Kutner believes the priest's claim of innocence. House concludes there's nothing wrong with Beeson and tells them to discharge the priest.

Foreman and Thirteen confront House and tell him that neither one of them is quitting. He tells them that Foreman compromised his medical ethics over the Huntington trials and he's fired. Meanwhile, Kutner and Taub prepare to discharge Beeson, who is claiming nausea and numbness of his foot. Kutner checks and discovers that Beeson is suffering from necrosis and one of his toes has fallen off.

Now that they have a real test, House calls Kutner and Taub in, and they wonder where their teammates are. House informs them that he's fired Foreman and Thirteen is standing by her man. They come up with a differential of carbon monoxide poisoning and House orders Beeson into a hyperbaric chamber while Taub and Kutner search the priest's apartment. Meanwhile, Foreman packs and tells Thirteen that House is right: he compromised his judgment when she was concerned and would do so again.

As Kutner and Taub go over Beeson's apartment and gossip about their teammates' relationship, Cuddy extends another invitation to House to attend the ceremony. He tells her she's a hypocrite when she isn't even particularly Jewish, but agrees to go. Surprised, Cuddy goes to Wilson and accuses him of convincing House to go to the ceremony. She was bluffing and figured House wouldn't call her bluff. Cuddy tells Wilson to get House to not come now that she's invited him to come. Wilson is less than thrilled.

As the team check Beeson, who is inside the hyperbaric chamber, he starts to gasp for breath. They get him out as he has what seems to be a heart attack.

Foreman asks Cuddy for a letter of recommendation, but she tells him that he screwed up on the Huntington trials and she's not going to give him a letter. Without it, he can't get a job.

The team goes over Beeson's new symptoms but the tests prove negative for any cause of the apparent heart attack. House tells them to do an angio but Thirteen refuses to cooperate in protest of Foreman's firing. House ignores her and goes to see Beeson. House is surprised and pleased to learn that Beeson doesn't believe in God either. Kutner and Taub run the angio and find nothing but a new symptom: Beeson's chest is numb.

As House orders neurological tests, Wilson approaches him and asks why he's going to the ceremony. House explains that he knows Cuddy is bluffing and didn’t want him to come, so he decided to accept the invitation.

Thirteen talks to Cameron and Chase and sees if there's a job available in ER. Chase wonders if House is trying to do the couple a favor but Cameron points out how unlikely that is, then agrees to make some calls to other hospitals.

Taub and Kutner run the neurological tests and Beeson stands by the fact that he lost his faith. He goes blind in his right eye and the team goes to differential with the new symptom. Thirteen suggests cancer or infection, but there is no indication of either. House suggests that the lack of white cells indicating an infection means there is an infection and Beeson as problems with his spleen. After he sends the others to run a biopsy, Thirteen asks if he'll hire Foreman back if she quits. House agrees but wonders if Foreman knows about her self-sacrifice. She lies, saying he does.

As the team runs the biopsy, House talks to Beeson again. The priest points out that House is the hypocrite: he hates people but keeps treating them because he's looking for something to give him hope. House denies it and leaves, and runs into Cuddy. She tells him she doesn't really want him at the ceremony and he easily gives in. Meanwhile, the biopsy shows that Beeson has pneumocystis, which he got from holy water. The germs are normally harmless unless the patient has a compromised immune system... as caused by AIDS. Beeson insists he doesn't have AIDS but refuses to let them run a test, which could provide a false positive and prove nothing. The AIDS treatment could injure Beeson's internal organs if their diagnosis is wrong. Taub insists that they should go ahead and should also contact Ryan. However, they can't violate Beeson's confidentiality without his permission so House orders Taub to drop the matter and put Beeson on AIDS medication.

At Foreman's place, Thirteen tells him that she's got a new job. Foreman is angry with her for going behind his back and the two fight. Meanwhile, House and Wilson have a fight of their own when Wilson wonders what House's obsession is with proving Cuddy's a hypocrite. He accuses House of really wanting to go but trying to find reasons not to go.

Taub goes to see Ryan at the diner where he works. Ryan doesn't seem concerned about the news that Beeson has AIDs and says that he tested negative. However, he is worried about Beeson.

Foreman confronts House and asks for his job back. Thirteen storms in and the two of them fight again because now he's going behind her back. House watches the whole thing in amusement. After Thirteen leaves, Foreman has to choose between Thirteen and his job. Foreman chooses his job.

As Beeson undergoes treatment, he breaks out in a rash. Back in differential, Thirteen suggests micro-tumors but Foreman violently disagrees with her and the two of them fight. House concedes they might have something and orders the necessary genetic tests. As they do so, Ryan arrives and begs Beeson's forgiveness.

Wilson keeps on trying to convince House to go to the ceremony. As he notes that Cuddy isn't a hypocrite because she admits she doesn't know everything about God, House gets an idea. He goes back to the white board and considers the symptoms, then eliminates the hallucination. Without that, the diagnosis is Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome, which also weakens the autoimmune system. House orders genetic tests to confirm and explains that drinking brought on the hallucination. Beeson doesn't believe it, noting that if it hadn't been for the hallucination, House would never have taken his case and never cured him. House dismisses the entire thing as coincidence but Beeson isn't so sure.

Cuddy visits Cameron and notes that House has succeeded again, taking on a case that no one else believed in, and even House didn't believe in. Cameron tells Cuddy to talk to House and tell him that she wants him at the ceremony. Cuddy catches House as he leaves but she can't bring herself to ask and House can't bring himself to give in.

Later, Cuddy holds the ceremony without House. Thirteen and Foreman make up, and House sits in his apartment alone.
