The Best Man - Recap

Barney is getting ready to get married to a "mystery bride". He is nervous and is scared that it is a disaster. Ted tells Barney that at least it isn't like Punchy's wedding turned out. He also told his kids in the beginning that he would not have met their mother if it weren't for Barney's wedding.

They tell the story about Punchey's wedding. Ted has had issues with giving toasts at wedding's before and he needed to write the perfect speech. There are plenty of videos of Ted's toasts and they always end up in him crying and trying to commiserate. He feels he needs to nail this toast. Barney says that he just needs to bring the magazine that he was on the cover of to nail something. He had been on the cover of an architecture magazine and the youngest at that.

Barney tries to give dating advice, but Robin tells him that he can't because he didn't even call Nora even though she seems to be perfect for him. The gang gives him some grief and pressures him to give her a call. He says he doesn't want something serious, but she does. Robin offers to buy wings for everyone, but Marshall and Lily say they've got it so they can talk about what they're holding in. Marshall doesn't know how they're going to keep the baby a secret for three months. He is so excited and wants to tell everyone.

Lily orders 4 beers, plus 1 non-alcoholic and the bartender goes "You're pregnant?! Get in here!" and gives her a hug. This secret is already proving harder than they thought it would to keep.

At Punchey's wedding, Barney goes on about how he is trying his new scam to get someone to sleep with as the "man slaughterer escapee". He slaps broken handcuffs on his wrists and goes to see if the shtick works. Punchey and his wife come over with alcohol and tell the gang to drink up because his wife's father paid for it and he hates his guts. Marshall has to drink for both he and Lily, because they are hiding their pregnancy. A woman goes screaming and Barney comes over to say that was flawed in hindsight, then he throws a medical mask on and says "Next up, Patient Zero".

Robin uses her truth voice and she still has feelings for Barney. Lily tries to get her to admit to it, but she denies it. Punchey is rooting for Ted to have a melt down at his wedding. Drunk Marshall decides to help Ted save face, but then Marshall sees a baby and concentrates on the baby instead while Ted tries to brag himself.

Lily convinces Robin to go to Barney and talk to him. They dance with one another and are completely perfect almost as if it were choreographed. Robin almost admits that she still has feelings for him and Nora calls. He asks Robin to tell him what to say and she tells him what she wanted to say to him, sadly.

Marshall and Lily decide to tell everyone they're pregnant after hanging out with babies. Robin goes to the roof to smoke a cigar with Ted. Ted is upset, because he hasn't settled down yet. He has stopped believing in love and fate. If you have chemisty, you only need one thing; timing. If you have bad timing, it could ruin everything.

She makes him promise to not cry during the toast and to start believing again. Marshall and Lily tell the gang and they are happy. Then Ted goes in to do the toast and he is crying happy tears. People mock him and Marshall gets up drunk and says that he is happy for his friends, because they are expecting. The wedding party misunderstood and the bride asks "how'd you know?!" causing quite a bit of a commotion.
