Dr. Craig "Huff" Huffstodt is a Los Angeles psychiatrist whose life and career comes under fire after a 15 year old gay patient of his commits suicide in his office. While at home, Huff tries to deal with his families insanities, including his very opinionated mother, Izzy, who is constantly butting into Beth, his wife's, business.
Huff has to go to the Medical Board and defend himself and his practice with Russel as his attorney. At work, Huff has his hands full with Melody Coatar, who is a dangerous bipolar patient and is later informed that he's being sued by the boy's parents who committed suicide in his office.
Byrd sneaks off to a teenage party and when Beth finds out what her 14 year old son did there, she goes ballistic, as Huff tries to convince her that nothing is wrong. Izzy's best friend, Lois, ends up having a major stroke. Huff has to prepare for his testimony in the wrongful-death lawsuit. Meanwhile, Russell has a party at his house that involves a ton of liquor and drugs.
Huff is upset when he discovers that a surprise witness has been called in the wrongful-death lawsuit. Russell hits Huff with tough questions in his preparation for the suit. Beth and Izzy fight about Izzy's not reserving privacy in the early morning. Meanwhile, Byrd ends up tutoring one of his high school classmates, Gail.
Huff gets a surprising visit from his father who wants him to be a go-between for him and Izzy. Beth discovers that her mother has found a lump in her breast. Russell tries to rescue a client, a sitcom star, who is now addicted to drugs and alcohol. At work, Huff discovers that Melody wants a transitional session between him and her new therapist and gets a visit from Doris, the mother of his now dead patient, who wants to know more about her son.
Pepper, a hooker Russell picked up not too long ago, comes to him for his services this time because she's facing grand larceny charges. Beth tries to stay busy as she deals with her mother's cancer and Izzy getting on her last nerve. Teddy goes missing from a field trip. Huff and Doris try to heal one another as they finally come to an understanding.
After he keeps having a surreal dream about his childhood, Huff decides to take off on a visit to the woods for a camping trip at the family cabin with his father and son. This marks the first time all three generations of the family are together at the cabin. Meanwhile, Russell embarks on a liver detoxification and cleansing program, with a surprising result. Also, Beth ends up having a strange encounter with one of Huff's patients while home alone.
Huff goes to Russell in hopes he can help him find his brother Teddy in Mexico. Beth's mother is dying and she is trying her best to deal with it. Izzy begins drinking heavily. Russell decides to take on a new client who ends up causing him a ton of problems.
Huff leaves to Tijuana in hopes of finding his brother Teddy, though he doesn’t know much about where Teddy is except that he’s near a pharmacy. Meanwhile, Teddy runs off after being threatened with arrest if he didn’t pay for a piece of candy that he gave a child, so he gets his hair shaven off in order to try to avoid the police. When Huff finds Teddy, he realizes that he isn’t going to be able to get Teddy back home without identification, so Huff swallows his pride and he asks Russel to forge a driver’s license for Teddy and bring it down to Tijuana.
Huff has reservations about Teddy's choice of an assisted-living facility; Russell asks Huff's professional opinion about his new client and her odd behavior; Beth's mother's condition takes a surprise turn; Teddy has a heart-to-heart chat with Byrd.
Huff and Beth's romantic weekend getaway turns steamy; Izzy meets an interesting man in a Palm Springs casino; Byrd is caught breaking into a neighbor's house; Teddy's mental health appears to be slipping after he begins exhibiting bizarre behavior; Dauri has fun with Russell.
Beth deals with a demanding, politically incorrect client; Huff has a high old time with a colleague; Teddy gets a job as an overnight security guard at a flower shop; Beth finally agrees to go to couples therapy; a law-firm partner gets a line on Russell's drug problem.

Huff's fractured relationship with Beth leaves him feeling emotionally and physically ill; Ben's attempt to reach out to Izzy fails; Russell fails to a keep a promise he made to Kelly; Teddy has been embellishing his situation to Alyssa and it's starting to catch up with him.
Huff decides to leave Beth, and his decision doesn't sit well with Byrd or Izzy; Teddy's dishonesty with Alyssa might be the undoing of their affair; Russell's irresponsibility toward Kelly has repercussions.
A surprisingly understanding Izzy helps Beth in her "hour of darkness"; Eli and Byrd hatch a plan to get even with James; and Huff and Russell hit the town for a "separation celebration." Elsewhere, Beth's dinner party ends on a disastrous note.
Huff and Russell's friendship is in danger; Izzy physically disciplines Byrd; Beth gets chummier with Alec; and Teddy's mental descent sends Alyssa packing.
