U.S. counter-intelligence operative Danny Cooper is chasing his target down a street. Danny begins to falter and finally collapses, bleeding from his nose and mouth. As Danny lies dying, he calls his brother Aaron and asks if he got the package he sent. Danny gives his brother a telephone number and tells him to call it for help, and then dies. His target returns and checks Danny's telephone, and discovers that he called Aaron.
When Aaron returns home, he discovers that someone has ransacked his apartment. When he hears someone in the next room, he grabs a baseball bat and attacks the intruder. It's Christopher Chance, who disarms him. Christopher confirms that he's Danny's long-time friend. When Aaron says that he called Danny's phone number and got no response, Christopher informs him that it was a special line he set up with Danny to inform him when Danny's family was in danger.
Christopher gets Danny out before the man who searched his apartment returns. As they drive away, Aaron explains that he thought his brother was a lawyer, but Christopher explains that was a cover for Danny's real job as a counter-intelligence operative, hunting down spies. Danny was tracking down a Russian agent, and told Aaron to call Christopher so that together they could complete his final mission. Aaron says that he's just a reporter and doesn't know what to do, and Christopher says that they need to start at the Russian Embassy. They return to Christopher's office and go over the package of files that Danny sent Aaron. The embassy is holding a reception and Guerrero reports that security is too tight to sneak in. There are several photos of a Russian named Alexi Volkov, and Chance figures that he's their best lead. Winston privately warns Christopher that it'll be dangerous, but Christopher insists on avenging Danny's death in return for the time that Danny saved his life in Kosovo.
Chance attends the embassy reception using the cover identity that Danny had established. He claims not to have his ID and Peter Blanchard, the State Department Liaison, comes over with Alexi… the embassy's head of security. Christopher claims that the Secretary of Defense invited him personally, and Winston scrambles to call the man and have him confirm Christopher's invitation when Blanchard calls him. Once Christopher is okayed to go in, he begins to enter and the receptionist tells him that his guest has arrived. Christopher figures that the guest is there to meet Danny and won't know who Christopher is, putting his cover at risk.
Guerrero works on Danny's coded files. He finds a reference to someone named Raven, and a list of poison antidotes. They figure that Raven had the antidote to the custom poison that killed Danny. Unfortunately, Aaron's nose starts bleeding and they realize that he's been poisoned as well. They warn Christopher about the poison and Christopher tells Guerrero to go back to Aaron's apartment and snoop around. Winston tell Christopher about Raven and Christopher goes to find Alexi.
Inside the embassy, Christopher realizes that the guards use security key cards to get through locked doors. He unbolts the leg of a table holding an ice sculpture to prepare a distraction, but is interrupted when an attractive brunette approaches him. She says that she's Carrie Jacobs, and she's Danny's "date." Christopher thinks that Danny hired a call girl to bolster his cover identity and slips her a $40 for her time and efforts. She's insulted, but the table collapses before she can protest. Taking advantage of his distraction, Christopher steals a key card from a guard and goes upstairs after Alexi, entering a locked room.
Guerrero dons a gas mask and rubber gloves and enters Aaron's apartment.
Alexi is meeting with Russian Spetsnaz commandos. Christopher realizes that they're elite soldiers and Alexis has brought them in for a reason. He picks up a letter opener but his hand shakes and the resulting noise draws a soldier's attention. Christopher hides beneath a desk to avoid detection and Alexi calls the soldier away before he can find the intruder. Once they're gone, Christopher realizes that Alexi has brought in the soldiers to find and capture Raven.
Guerrero searches Aaron's apartment and finds something in the ceiling air vent.
Christopher confirms that Alexi has beefed up security at the embassy in an attempt to capture Raven. His nose starts to bleed. Meanwhile, Guerrero calls Winston to inform him that he's found a poison dispersal system in Aaron's apartment and that both Aaron and Christopher were affected. Winston calls Christopher on the radio and warns him that the poison will cause high fever and loss of reflexes. He wants his friend to get out, but Christopher insists on staying to find the spy and get the antidote. Suddenly, Carrie attacks him. He manages to hold her off until she drops him to the floor and produces a hidden blade. Holding it to his neck, she demands answers. Christopher holds a knife of his own to the femoral in her leg and convinces her to back off. He then tells her that he's been poisoned and is looking for Raven. She figures that Christopher is a paid mercenary, while Christopher figures that she's a FBI agent and "Carrie" introduces herself as Emma Barnes. She explains that she was Danny's liaison and they were working to track down Raven. The spy stole a weapons prototype from the U.S. Government and plans to sell it at the reception in just 15 minutes. Christopher realizes that once Raven sells the plans, he'll disappear… along with the antidote.
Guerrero returns to the office and admits he couldn't find a doctor. He has a defibrillator and assures Aaron that he's in good hands.
Christopher and Emma return to the reception. He figures that Raven will trade the stolen plans off in the open, and realizes that one of the numbers in Danny's file is a transmission intercept code for a Bluetooth. Christopher programs the code and intercepts Raven's transmission. The spy is auctioning off the plans to the highest bidder. Christopher has Emma enter a bid from the U.S. government. One man reacts and Christopher spots him and pursues. The man runs outside, but Raven emerges from hiding and kills him, and then slips away. Christopher and Emma arrive and confirm that the dead man was a Russian oil magnate. Alexi's soldiers find them standing over the body.
Christopher and Emma are handcuffed together and the handcuffs are fastened to an anchored table in the security center. As they wait, Emma apologizes for mistaking Christopher for a mercenary, and admits that the trick with the Bluetooth was clever. She figures that the FBI will negotiate for her release and she can get Christopher freed as well, but he warns her that he'll be dead from the poison long before the U.S. government gets them out. She offers to carry out any final wishes that he has, and Christopher bends forward and kisses her neck. The Russian guard separates them, unaware that Christopher has managed to snag Emma's hairpin with his teeth. When Alexi arrives, he sits down and demands to know which one of them is Raven, and where the plans are.
At the apartment, the weakening Aaron 's heart stopped. Guerrero and Winston managed to revive him with the defibrillator, but they've only bought the reporter a little extra time.
Christopher tries telling Alexi the truth, and suggests he check their hands for gun powder residue to prove their innocence. He also suggests that Alexi check the guests' hands for powder residue to flush out Raven. Alexi is skeptical and Christopher explains that he's been poisoned and wants to help find Raven. Blanchard demands to see the American captives in the embassy, and Alexi reluctantly lets him in. Christopher realizes that Blanchard wouldn't have any way to know they were there unless he was Raven. Blanchard grabs a guard's gun and shoots Alexi and the security team. Christopher picks the lock fastening the handcuffs to the table and, working together, he and Emma attack Blanchard. Blanchard manages to get the upper hand and prepares to shoot Christopher, but Alexi shoots him. Blanchard collapses after shooting Alexi dead. Christopher and Emma try to find the keys to free themselves from the handcuffs without success. Searching Blanchard's body, they find a key for a nearby hotel room. They let Guerrero and Winston know, and then destroy all the video recordings showing their presence. They get outside, steal a motorbike, and drive away with the soldiers in hot pursuit.
Guerrero goes to the hotel room and finds the antidote hidden in the refrigerator, and then calls Christopher to notify him they'll meet him outside the embassy.
Christopher drives through the embassy grounds, going down a flight of stairs and losing a pursuing guard. As they drive down the driveway, the soldiers try to cut them off in front and behind. Christopher rams the motorcycle over the hood of the car ahead of them. He and Emma are thrown free while the pursuing car slams into the blocking car. They get to the wall and Emma helps Christopher over, insisting he escape so he can clear her name. With her help, they make it and Guerrero and the others arrive just in time to administer the antidote. Guerrero cuts off the handcuffs and they prepare to escape, leaving Emma behind. When she insists that he can't just disappear on her, Christopher admits that he'll have to owe her one but has to go.
Later, Emma returns to her FBI office and runs a check on Christopher's fingerprints. She lifted them from the pair of handcuffs she left behind. The check turns up positive, but for a John Doe who goes by dozens of aliases… including Christopher Chance.
Aaron visits Chance, who congratulates him on the article he wrote about Danny's death. Aaron admits he's not sure who Danny was, and Christopher explains that Danny became whoever he needed to be to get the job done. He tells Aaron that if he ever calls, Aaron should pick up because it'll be important. Once Aaron leaves, Winston informs Christopher that Emma ran a computer check on his fingerprints. Christopher admits he might have been careless and left his fingerprints on the handcuffs. Winston wonders if he deliberately left his fingerprints behind so he'd have an excuse to meet Emma again. Christopher denies it, but Winston's isn't totally convinced.
