Baptiste - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A battered and bleeding African American, Baptiste, is waiting at an Amtrak station when a man tries to mug him. Baptiste easily disarms the man and sends him on his way. Chance, equally battered, comes over and sits down next to Baptiste. Baptiste notes that Chance can't kill him in front of witnesses, and there'll be a panic if he opens fire. Chance points out that the train will be there in four minutes and then everyone else will be gone. Baptiste doubts that Chance can kill him, but is interested to find out if he can bring himself to pull the trigger.

Eight Hours Ago

Chance and Winston get word of a murder of a John Doe. The victim's fingerprints have been burned off and the face shot off. The man's watch is missing. They explain to the detective that the killer is an assassin who destroyed the body's identification to cover his tracks. In private, Winston warns that Baptiste has a six-hour head start and he knows that Chance wants the assassin dead. He assures Chance that he won't interfere.

Chance arrives at the doorstep of FBI agent Emma Barnes. She immediately arrests him over the embassy incident, and explains she was reprimanded and demoted. Her date Roger comes in and Emma tells him to get a pair of handcuffs from her bedroom drawer. She sends her date on his way and Chance asks for a chance to explain. He tells her that Baptiste is in town and he is targeting a dignitary. The case can make Emma's career, and the dead man, Rene Dupont, worked at the United Nations. Baptiste stole the man's identity for access to the building and has planned for every contingency. They are the only ones who can stop Baptiste. Emma wonders why Chance knows so much, and Chance admits that he trained the assassin.

Now

Baptiste wonders why Chance broke up their team, and insists that everyone deserves to die. He observes that Chance is now on a quest to protect others, but he couldn't protect the people he cared about.

Earlier

Chance is less interested in discussing he's a former assassin then in stopping Baptiste. Winton and Guerrero arrive with a new teammate: Layla, a computer tech and former security monitor at Sentronics. As Guerrero and Layla set up equipment, and Winston warns Chance not to get involved with Emma. They notice she has a wall tracking Chance's movements, and suggest they get the white list with the itineraries of all foreign dignitaries. Emma warns that she can't get it, and they ask her to help them get it from the office of Deputy Director Lynch… by breaking in using her ID. Chance convinces her that he's sincere, and Baptiste will use his cover to convince someone at the UN to give him access to the FBI.

Baptiste meets with Lecavalier, head of UN security, and informs him there's a security breach in Operation Olive Branch. Lecavalier notifies Lynch and confirms that they'll be meeting with her. When Lecavalier insists on going with him, Baptiste kills him and takes his expensive watch.

Chance and Emma get into the FBI Building and leave a case behind that gives Layla access to the FBI computers. Her activities are quickly discovered and she warns that it will take additional time to access the mainframe.

Emma hesitates in the elevator before hitting the button for the sixth floor. An impatient Chance hits the button and then asks if it was her third date. She wonders why he thinks that and Chance notes he saw her bra and figured it was a third-date bra. Emma denies it and insists that it was a first date.

In the lobby, Baptiste arrives and goes up to see Lynch.

Now

Baptiste admits that he doesn't understand why Chance left because of a girl. He took no pleasure in killing her, and simply did it to clean up Chance's mess. He wonders why Chance threw away his life over a girl he barely knew, and notes that Chance is doing the same thing again. Baptiste points out that Chance brought Emma into the case, and what happened to her is Chance's fault.

Earlier

Chance and Emma are unable to get in until Layla hacks the permissions. While they wait, Chance invites Emma to dinner but she refuses. Layla gets them the access and they enter Lynch's office. FBI agents have set up for a protection detail, including Emma's fellow agent Folster. Emma bluffers her way in and Chance introduces himself with a cover. Layla works quickly to get Chance's fake ID into the system as Folster checks the computer. While the agent runs the records, Chance and Emma figure that the FBI is setting up to protect a Chinese/Taiwan meeting called Operation Olive Branch.

Winston and Guerrero learn what's going on and Winston goes to check with his contacts in the police and find out where the meeting is. Meanwhile, Chance spots Baptiste with Lynch. Lynch spots Emma and wonders why she's there, and Baptiste immediately recognizes Chance. He slips out and Emma and Chance make their escape. Winston spots Baptiste on the security cameras.

As Emma and Chance drive after Baptiste, Chance warns that Lynch will never cancel the meeting without solid evidence. Baptiste calls Emma and asks if she and Chance are an item. Chance takes the phone and suggests they should meet, and Baptiste rams their car, knocking it off the road and rendering them unconscious.

Now

Chance warns that their old boss is using both of them, but Baptiste insists he treated them both like sons. However, Chance betrayed him and took the name "Christopher Chance" as an insult. He wonders why Chance is trying to provoke his former boss into coming after him, and wonders if Chance has a death wish, or simply lost his edge.

Earlier

Chance recovers consciousness and grabs Emma's gun, and then returns fire at Baptiste to hold him at bay so he can get Emma out. The police approach and Baptiste shoots the leaking gasoline. Chance gets Emma out as the car explodes, while Baptiste escapes. Winston goes to get them while Guerrero has Layla scan the records of disposable cell phones to find the one that called Emma's cell phone. Layla traces the phone and Guerrero calls it up. Guerrero describes how someone hired a skinny thug to hire Guerrero to steal information on Chance, and Guerrero killed the thug. Baptiste denies any personal involvement. Guerrero then offers to sell Chance out, but Baptiste doesn't believe it and asks Guerrero how his child is doing, and then warns that he's going to destroy Guerrero. After Baptiste hangs up, Guerrero tells Layla that the assassin gave something away.

As they wait in an alley, Emma asks Chance who Katherine Walters is. He explains that he used to work for a man who manipulated a young angry Chance into becoming a killer. When Chance was ordered to kill Katherine, he refused. Emma realizes he fell in love with Katherine, and Chance admits that he couldn't protect the girl from Baptiste. Winston arrives and picks them up, and explains that Guerrero heard church bells in the background when he talked to Baptiste. They go over the list of red flags from Winston's police contacts and realize that Baptiste was at Georgetown University. They head for the campus.

Baptiste is at the campus, cutting open a manhole cover. An electric manager approaches him and demands answers, and Baptiste kills him. However, the assassin refuses to take the man's watch.

Now

Baptiste assures Chance that he'll get answers. He'll learn if Chance is a new man, or if his old friend is still there. Chance says there'll be no consequences if he kills the assassin, but Baptiste warns that all bets are off and the old man will go after everyone Chance has ever cared about. The train arrives and everyone leaves.

Earlier

Chance, Emma, and Winston arrive at Georgetown and spot the open manhole cover. They go down and Emma prepares to inform the FBI detail what's going on. Chance realizes that Baptiste will have to take everyone out at once by blowing up the building. He finds a hidden canister of flammable gas hooked up to the heating system, and tells Emma to have Lynch clear the building while he tries to find Baptiste at the best vantage point.

Outside the building, Emma tries to mobilize the FBI to evacuate but Lynch demands answers. As they argue, Baptiste takes out a sniper and sees Emma trying to evacuate the delegates. Folster arrives and confirms Emma's story. Lynch okays the evacuation and Baptiste prepares to activate the bomb. Chance shoots the remote out of his hand and they struggle, while Emma realizes one delegate is still inside and goes in after him. Baptiste stabs Chase in the leg and activates the bomb, blowing up the building. Too late, Chance throws the knife into Baptiste, knocking him off the edge of the building. Winston arrives and admits that Emma didn't make it out. They realize that Baptiste manage to survive the fall and has fled. Winston confirms that Layla determined that Baptiste made a reservation on an Amtrak train and they head for the nearest stations.

At the station, Baptiste assures Chance that he can run, but he doesn't intend to provoke Chance. He wants to see if Chance truly believes that no one deserves to die. The train leaves and both men get to their feat. Emma arrives and explains she got the delegate out via a back exit. Chance prepares to shoot Baptiste, and Emma says that it isn't him anymore. After a moment, Chance lowers his gun and Baptiste insists that Chance has lost his edge. The HRT arrive and Emma places him into Federal custody. Once they're gone, Emma say she has to go back to work and thanks him. As she starts to walk away, she turns back to ask him about dinner… and discovers that Chance has slipped away.

Layla cleans up Emma's apartment and asks Guerrero if they'll always be saving people and catching criminals. Guerrero warns that it's the adrenaline speaking and that nothing is what it appears to be…. and nothing's ever over.

As Baptiste is lead away, he admires one of his guard's watches and confidently smiles.
