On Tanarak Island in Alaska, Dr. Jessica Shaw vows to do what she has to. She tries to drive out but the police close in on her.
Jessica's mother Rita takes her voicemail message and plays it for Winston, and explains that she doesn't now who to trust on the island.
The sheriff pulls Jessica over and asks to search her SUV, while thugs get out of a nearby vehicle and close in.
Winston admits that Detective Simms brought Jessica's mother to them because they're the best, but they haven't operated in Alaska before.
The sheriff finds the corpse of a Hank Benson in the back. Jessica explains that she's taking it in for an autopsy, but the sheriff warns the company isn't going to like that. The other men close in and Jessica drives away. The sheriff and the others take up the pursuit and Jessica goes off the road and down a hill. The men go down after her.
Winston and Chance go over the files for Atrius Industries. The company has sealed off the island, supposedly for safety due to blasting operations, and Winston explains that they were trying to prevent the autopsy of a foreman who supposedly died of a heart attack. He's confirmed that the man apparently did die of a heart attack. Guerrero is working on a cover for Chance to infiltrate Tanarak Island, and Winston warns that Chance is an insider and Guerrero can't get him in. Guerrero promptly sets Chance up as a government official, and Chance tells Winston to work the corporate angle while he flies to Tanarak. As Chance leaves, Winston tells him to keep a low profile.
Chance arrives at Tanarak, driving a Camaro and playing loud music. The sheriff has the bridge blockaded and Chance introduces himself and insists on going in. The sheriff calls in and gets permission to send him in. However, he tells Chance that one of the company thugs, Big Mike, will drive him in.
As they drive in, Big Mike spots a fire and they call it in. He claims that they lost touch with a surveyor and the man tells Chance to stay in the car while he investigates. Chance knocks him out and takes his gun, and follows the smoke to a campfire. Jessica attacks him, wielding a syringe, and Chance easily subdues her and explains why he's there. She assumes he's a mercenary and Chance doesn't correct her. They go back to the truck and Jessica explains that Benson complained of unexplained rash and difficult breathing. Then she got a call that he died of a heart attack, and scheduled the autopsy. Atrius insisted on conducting the autopsy, but Jessica refused to let it go.
Duke and his people find the truck and begin a search of the woods.
Guerrero sneaks into Atrius, accesses their computer files, and determines that the conspiracy goes all the way to the CEO, Banneker. He then called the head of R&D, Dr. David Patel, and Guerrero assures Winston he'll get the man to talk.
Chance explains that he plans to go to the marina and steal a boat so they can get to the mainland. Jessica warns that it won't work and doesn't want to see him killed. Chance spots the men closing in and they retreat as the company men open fire. He provides cover fire so they can escape, but come to a cliff overlooking a river. There's only thing to do: jump. When Jessica balks, he grabs her and leaps.
Later, Chance and Jessica make it down river but she warns they're still 6-7 miles away from the marina. She tells them they have to remove their clothing and stay close to avoid a reduction in core temperature. Chance suggests they share body heat, and Jessica insists it's only for practical reasons.
Guerrero meets with Winston, who wonders where Patel is. Patel is locked in the trunk, and Guerrero admits the scientist wasn't very talkative.
As they warm up, Chance asks Jessica what her story is. She explains that she wasn't able to make a difference in San Francisco, and traveled the world as a Doctor Without Borders so she could find a way to make a difference, and she swore an oath to help people.
At Chance's apartment, Winston apologizes to Patel for his treatment. While Guerrero checks the doctor's phone, Winston interrogates him and Patel refuses to talk until Guerrero threatens him. Patel explains that Agrius perfect a chemical called propalyde, and warns that it's a ticking time bomb.
Chance subdues one of the company thugs, takes his truck, and accesses a satellite directly to contact Winston. Winston warns that propalyde is an industrial solvent that is highly toxic. Agrius has to erase any evidence of Benson's death, including Jessica, to avoid a billion-dollar lawsuit. They need soil samples from the mine. Chance explains that they'll keep coming after Jessica, and she agrees to stay so they can get proof of the cover-up. He then tells Winston to get a plane to an airfield near the mine in four hours, and Winston assures him he'll figure something out.
Chance and Jessica go to the mining site and search the construction office for maps of the shaft where Benson was stricken. They find the maps and go to the shaft.
Patel explains that Agrius officials collected all of the evidence, and Guerrero finds an unidentified phone number. It belongs to John Taggart, a "fixer" that Agrius hired to get rid of the evidence. The man told Patel to stay silent. Guerrero figures that Taggart has the evidence that they need.
Chance and Jessica enter the mine shaft and find a sealed tunnel.
The head thug, Duke, discovers the break-in at the construction office, and figure that Jessica is going to get evidence. He orders his men to seal the tunnel.
In the tunnel, Chance and Jessica find traces of propalyde. As they head for the mine entrance, an alarm goes off. Realizing it's a detonation alert, Chance gets Jessica back as the explosives go off, sealing them in. In the aftermath, Jessica realizes there's a piece of rock in Chance's back and works to remove it. She notices bullet wounds and barbed wire scars, and other unidentified marks, and explains that a hospital in Chicago where she worked pressured her not to treat a patient. Jessica caved, and then swore she'd never walk away from someone she needed to protect. Chance admits that he's been in a similar situation. Jessica removes the shard and Chance hears a hissing noise. They investigate and discover a carbon monoxide venting pipe has broken open.
Patel arranges a meeting with Taggart, who drives to the rendezvous. Guerrero gets in instead and tells him that he knows all about his work with Agrius, and figures Taggart kept one folder for himself. He warns that Agrius is going down, and informs Taggart that he doesn't turn over the evidence, he'll do painful things to his wife and children.
Chance piles up some acetylene canisters in front of an adjoining shaft and blasts an entrance into an adjoining surface shaft. They head for a nearby cliff and jump off into a nearby truck filled with sand. Duke and his men arrive and the fugitives drive away in the truck. Chance opens fire and the company thugs shoot back while two of them jump onto the truck. Chance gets out and struggles with Duke, leaving Jessica to drive, while a stray shot hits the gas tanks. Once he knocks out Duke, Chance grabs a flare gun and gets Jessica, jumping clear. As Duke recovers and prepares to shoot the, Chance ignites the gas, causing the truck to blow up. A plane flies overhead and Jessica and Chance head for the airfield.
Winston is waiting in Jason Banneker's limo when the CEO gets in. He shows Banneker the confidential files that Taggart provided and tells the CEO that he'll be going to a minimum-security prison and the company will go under. However, Winston warns that he can implicate Banneker for conspiracy to murder Jessica, and he'll go to a maximum-security prison. He agrees not to as long as Banneker stays away from Jessica, and he writes a check for everything he has. Banneker considers… and then takes out his checkbook and starts writing.
Back at his apartment, Chance is playing with his dog when Jessica arrives. Winston heads for his office and Jessica explains that she's there to visit her mother. He quickly figures that she's heading to another hot spot in Dakar. Jessica thanks him and invites him to call her up if he's overseas. Chance suggests she check out a restaurant where she's going and then gives her the check as travel money so she can keep doing good work. Jessica thanks him and leaves.
