Christopher Chance - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In the Tenderloin district, masked mercenaries break into Chance's warehouse apartment from all sides. One of them finds a hot cup of coffee.

Six Years Ago

Winston is drinking Irish Coffee in a bar when the man known as Chance comes by and commiserates about tough times at work. He claims he's an Assistant U.S. District Attorney and explains that he has coworkers he doesn't trust and a boss who doesn't trust him. They talk about Winston's first name, and he finally admits that it's Laverne.

Now

Chance gets the drop on one of the soldiers, and Winston opens fire on another. However, he and Guerrero are quickly overwhelmed and Chance is forced to surrender to save them. The soldiers' leader, a suave well-dressed man known only as the Interrogator, comes in. He takes three jars of bolts and informs Chance that he'll break one each time Chance lies. When they're all broken, Winston and Guerrero die. The Interrogator starts by saying that they want something that once belonged to Chance's employer, Joubert. His people are former disgruntled clients, and want to obtain the item before the Old Man does. Its disappearance relates to Katherine Walters. When Chance denies knowing a Katherine Walters, the Interrogator breaks a jar.

Then

Chance explains that there was a professional hit at the docks and Winston only has one shaky witness. He claims he's been working a related case and wants to talk to the witness, but doesn't want to go through channels. Winston refuses and leaves, but Chance has secretly stolen his cell phone and checks the log to find out where he's keeping Katherine at a safe house.

Now

The Interrogator explains that they know Chance knows about Katherine's death because they're the ones who hired him to kill her. The Interrogator refuses to identify who he is and returns to the item. The last time it was seen was the day Katherine died, and she spent the last 48 hours with Chance. When Chance says he won't get anything from him, the Interrogator says that Guerrero and Winston will die if he doesn't cooperate.

Then

Chance arrives at the safe house and meets her puppy, Carmine. It takes to him immediately and Katherine comes in. She's impressed that Carmine likes him and makes cookies. As they talk, Chance secretly poisons her tea. Katherine explains that she went to the aid of a dying stranger on the docks where she works and he said two words, "Leonore Fortier." She can't understand why anyone wants her dead because she insists she doesn't know anything. Chance notes that the report said she knew the guy, but Katherine denies it. When she starts to drink her tea, Chance "accidentally" knocks it down. He calls Joubert and says that Katherine doesn't know the dead man, Bruner, but Joubert tells Chance to do his job and eliminate Katherine despite his doubts.

Chance goes to Katherine's bedroom and tells her to pack. He explains that she's not safe there and that he's an assassin. If he can get to her, any other killer can as well. Chance explains that he doesn't want to kill her, and if she summons the cops, he'll run and Joubert will send someone else. He gives her a gun which Catherine points at him, and then asks why he's backing out. Chance says that he's tired of the part he's been forced to play, and she believes him.

Winston arrives to discover that Chance and Katherine fought and knocked out the two detectives.

Now

Winston tells the Interrogator that he quit two days after Katherine went missing. He didn't want to quit until he found out where Chance too Katherine.

Then

Chance takes Katherine to his own safe house and explains that the Old Man usually works for expensive clients, but this time he wouldn't tell Chance who hired his organization to eliminate Katherine. He warns that until they figure out who Leonore Fortier is, Joubert will keep coming after her. After she showers, Katherine comes to the bedroom and sits next to Chance. She admits that she doesn't know what to do from here on and starts crying, and Chance holds her.

A man sneaks into the safe house but Chance hears him and confronts him. It's one of his co-workers: Guerrero. Chance tells him to walk away, but Guerrero explains that the Old Man sent him personally to take care of Chance's mess. They struggle for the gun and Chance gets the upper hand. He prepares to shoot Guerrero, but Katherine comes out and Chance stops himself and simply knocks Guerrero unconscious.

Now

The Interrogator talks to Guerrero and wonders why he didn't kill Chance then. Guerrero makes a joke and the Interrogator notes that they found Chance because Guerrero joined forces with him again.

Then

Guerrero wakes up and finds Baptiste there, and Chance and Katherine gone. When Guerrero starts to leave, Baptiste asks him why and Guerrero explains that Chance spared his life and it's between Chance and Joubert. Baptiste calls the Old Man, who tells him to dispose of Chance before their client becomes their enemy. He hangs up and talks to his client… the Interrogator. The Interrogator tells him that the book should never have existed, and Joubert has to destroy it.

As they drive, Chance explains that Joubert took him in as a child and saw Chance as his son. He wanted Chance to take over, but things got rocky and now Chance doesn't know who to trust. Chance says that there's one guy he can trust. He went up a bodyguard a few years ago, the best he ever fought, and the man lives at a warehouse in the Tenderloin district. They go there and find an old man waiting for them with a shotgun. He knows Chance is an assassin, but Katherine says that Chance saved her life. The bodyguard steps forward and introduces himself as Christopher Chance.

Later, Katherine sleeps as Chance explains that he started digging and found out that there have been a line of "Christopher Chances" who worked as bodyguards and have died down through the years. The current man got it from the guy who taught him. Christopher Chance is the man to go to when no one else can help.

Katherine gets a call from Winston, who warns her that Chance is dangerous. She doesn't believe it.

Chance asks the bodyguard for help, admitting he's only been on offense. He tells Chance to dictate the tempo, keep his opponent's off-guard and keep Katherine close. Chance admits that when the bodyguard told him, "Nobody deserves to die," it changes his entire life.

Winston tells Katherine that Bruner hid something aboard a freighter, the Leonore. He figures that the dead man was killed when he tried to retrieve it. Chance takes the phone and Winston insists that they need to help Katherine, but Chance warns that he can't help as long as he wears a badge.

The next morning, Katherine suggests that they go to the ship and find what Bruner hid there. The bodyguard says he's not worth much and can't help them, but wishes them luck. Katherine and Chance take a boat to the docks where Katherine worked. Chance insists on going in alone to keep her safe, and keeps in contact with her via radio. Before he goes, they kiss, and Chance promises that he'll get her out.

Chance goes to Katherine's office and she gives him her computer password. There's no record of a passenger named Fortier, but Chance realizes that "Fortier" is a number: Forty-A. He locates cargo container 40-A and goes to find it. Meanwhile, Baptiste is parked nearby and listens via a radio, and then spots Katherine.

Now

Chance tells the Interrogator that there was nothing in the container, but he breaks the second jar and Chance tells him the truth.

Then

Chance finds a case inside the container. Inside the container is a book. When Chance emerges with the case, Baptiste is waiting for him. He insists that he doesn't care how dangerous the book is, and they need to give it to Joubert because that's what their mentor wants. Chance offers him the book in return for Joubert's promise that Katherine goes unharmed. Baptiste refuses and Chance tells him he has to make up his mind. Baptiste prepares to fire but Chance ducks away behind a passing truck. He climbs on top of the containers and Baptiste comes after him. He finds the case, lying on a container, but it's a trap. Chance ambushes him and knocks him down, and the case goes into the water. Baptiste informs Chance that he only kept Katherine alive until he had the book. He takes out a detonator, points out that Chance left Katherine alone, and detonates a bomb aboard her boat. Furious, Chance attacks Baptiste, who draws a knife and prepares to stab him. The bodyguard arrives and shoots Baptiste, but the killer manages to throw his knife into the man's chest. Baptiste slips away as the dying bodyguard asks Chance who he wants to be.

Now

The Interrogator tells Chance that they dredged the channel but the case was gone. Chance insists he doesn't know where the book is located. The Interrogator realizes that with all the shooting and the explosion, the police never investigated. He goes to talk to Winston and figures that he was there on docks that day. The Interrogator asks where the book can be found.

Chance taunts the soldier guarding him and asks if he knew the man who used to live there.

Then

Chance returns to the warehouse and finds Carmine waiting for him. As it sniffs around, it finds several caches of weapons.

Now

Chance explains to the soldier that his mentor told him to choose the battlefield. When the soldier receives a radio alert that there's been a breech, Chance takes advantage of the momentary distraction, knocks him back, grabs a hidden knife, and kills the man. Chance runs outside and grabs a hidden gun, and then kills several other soldiers. However, he discovers that the Interrogator has left with Winston. Another soldier prepares to shoot him, but someone kills him: Joubert. Chance tries to shoot him, only to realize he's out of bullets. Joubert wants to talk about what they're going to undertake. The old man points out that they'll have to work together to get back Winston and the book. Guerrero arrives with Carmine and they both threaten Joubert. The Old Man asks Chance what it's going to be.

Then

Winston finds Chance at the bodyguard's warehouse and informs him that he handed in his resignation. Chance is drinking and blames himself for Katherine's death, but Winston says that they're both responsible. He suggests that Chance save the next victim, and the next, and the next. He caps the bottle that Chance is drinking from, tells him to think about it, and starts to go. However, he turns and asks Chance who he is. Chance says that his name is now Christopher Chance.

Now

Chance prepares to leave with Joubert in a helicopter. He tells Guerrero that he knows what to do, and Guerrero assures him that they'll get Winston back. Guerrero watches as Chance flies away with Joubert.
