Bertie's passion for trombone playing causes Jeeves to leave his employ. Bertie travels to the countryside with Brinkley, his new valet. While there, he's invited to Chuffnell Hall and is shocked to find Jeeves there, now the valet of Bertie's chum, Chuffy.

Chuffy's financial situation has hit rock bottom; he's selling Chuffnell Hall and the prospective buyer is Mr. Stoker, who is visiting with his daughter, Pauline. Chuffy's fallen in love with Pauline, but has a falling out with Mr. Stoker. It's up to Jeeves to come up with a plan to bring the young lovers back together, as well as putting Chuffy's finances back on track, and solving Bertie's difficulties with his new valet. Jeeves' plan is as successful as a house on fire.

Episode Quotes

Bertie: We shall be going down to Devon for a couple of weeks this afternoon, Brinkley. I hope that meets with your approval.
Brinkley: Don't have any say, do I?
Bertie: Uh, yes... I see what you mean.

Bertie: And you love this, um... (laughs) ...excuse me, this Marmaduke?
Pauline: I'm dippy about him, Bertie. Don't you just worship the way his hair sort of fluffs up at the back?
Bertie: My dear girl, I have better things to do than go about staring at the back of Chuffy's head. The front's bad enough.

Bertie: What about the 'oof' situation?
Chuffy: The what?
Bertie: The oof... the dibs, the do-re-mi, the happy cabbage, the oil of palms...
Chuffy: Yes, yes, I do speak English! It's all right; Stoker's agreed to buy the hall.
Bertie: Really? Oh, well, Chuffy, that is good news.

Bertie: I can honestly say that Pauline is one of the nicest girls I've ever been engaged to.
Chuffy: I wish you'd stop harping on about that engagement.
Bertie: Never lose sight of the fact, Chuffy, that the betrothal only lasted two days, during both of which I was in bed with a nasty cold.
Chuffy: Oh, she must have had a wonderful time, being engaged to you. What on earth made her accept you, I wonder?
Bertie: I know... I once consulted a knowledgeable pal, and his theory was that the sight of me, hanging around like a loony sheep, awoke the maternal instinct in women. There may be something in this.

(explaining that Chuffy got angry at Mr. Stoker)
Jeeves: His Lordship, I regret to say, became somewhat unguarded in his speech.
Bertie: He ticked Stoker off.
Jeeves: With considerable vigor, Sir, stating in an extremely candid manner, his opinion of the latter's character, commercial probity, and even appearance.
Bertie: Well, that must have put a lid on it.
Jeeves: It did create a coolness, Sir.

Chuffy: Ah, there you are, Jeeves. You ready for the off? I've nearly finished the letter. I've stuck more or less to what you've suggested.
Jeeves: 'More or less,' Sir?
Chuffy: Well, some of it was a bit too... oh, I don't know... soppy.
Jeeves: You'll pardon me for saying so, Sir, but soppiness is at the very heart of the successful love letter. Without a sufficient degree of soppiness, there is a danger of the communication being laid aside by the recipient, to be read at some future date, together with the gas bill, Sir.
