Jake Green [Prodigal son turned hero], played by Skeet Ulrich
.Jake Green is the proverbial 'Prodigal Son', in reverse. Jake's original plan is go to Jericho, collect his inheritance provided by his Grandfather, Jacob Eric Green, and then return to San Diego to open his own business as a pilot.
During an interview for a position as a private airline pilot, Jake recalls piloting his grandfather's crop-duster plane at the tender age of ten. In Episode No. 12, we know that Jake was piloting planes in Afghanistan and Iraq for a private security group, known as 'Ravenwood'.
Upon returning home to Jericho, Jake learns that his father, Johnston Green, has been assigned as 'trustee' and is not ready to hand over Jake's inheritance until he is convinced that his son has truly changed his life for the better. Five years earlier, Jake had been involved with some unsavory characters and was forced to make a hasty exist after an attempted robbery gone awry.
The father and son conversation is cut short and to avoid further arguments, Jake's mother, Gail Green, suggests they go and visit his grandfather. At the cemetary, Jake tells his mother he needs to return to San Diego. It is during his exit from Jericho that Jake's attention, along with a driver of an on-coming car, is diverted from the road to an ominous mushroom cloud, thereby causing a head-on collison.
After regaining consciousness, Jake realizes that he has injuries to his leg and and head. He then checks on the other driver and passenger and after learning of the their deaths begins walking, we assume back to Jericho. During his walk, Jake hears distressed voices in the distance. He sees two young children and goes goes to help them. He can see that the school bus hit a dear and after entering the bus finds out there much more to deal with then he ever bargained for.

Emily Spenser, played by Ashley Scott
Emily managed to lead a better life when her high-school sweetheart Jake Green left town. His return only means heartache for the poor girl, as it comes with the memory of her late brother and criminal-minded estranged father, and accompanied by the assumed-loss of her fiance during the nuclear attacks.
Will Jake's presence in town be a helping hand for her, or just one more tragedy in her life? |

Mayor Green [Season 1], played by Gerald McRaney
JohnstontGreen is very much an older version of his eldest son Jake, even though the two have a strained relationship at the show's beginning. Like Jake, Johnsont left his hometown and traveled to many cities and country, as well as serving in Korea as a US Army Ranger.
He had been mayor of Jericho for 25 years when challenge by rival Gray Anderson, to whom he ultimately lost the election. He thus returned ti his family life, but keept a close eye on the situation, and remained an important leadrship figure for the town, escpeially as a war began brewing with the neighboring town of New Bern. |
