• Fans strengthen bid to save 'Jericho’ with TV ad

Fans of the TV show “Jericho” aren’t giving up in a battle to get the twice-canceled drama back on the air.

In a rare move, a group called Save Jericho Again has created a TV commercial pleading for the program’s return. The spot began playing last week and will play more than 200 times in the Los Angeles area. The ad may also be streamed online at www.savejerichoagain.com, one of several online sites that remain devoted to the program and its revival.

The $6,000 advertisement was paid for by fan donations and may be the first time that fans of a canceled television show have purchased TV airtime to lobby for its return. Other elements of the campaign include an ad in the show business trade newspaper Variety and a large billboard in Los Angeles.

“Jericho,” set in a small Kansas town after much of the country has been destroyed by nuclear weapons, first aired in the 2006-07 season on CBS, but was dropped by the network. After a fan protest, CBS relented and returned the show earlier this year for seven more episodes, but then cut it a second time. The program continues to generate a lot of online traffic, with episodes still available for streaming on the CBS Web site (www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho) and are now on DVD.

Save Jericho Again and other fan groups are hoping the program will be revived on basic cable.
