Episode 1 Review
The show appears to be about a dysfunctional surfing family. Young grandparents with a former great surfer son who's life is all messed up. They care for the talented surfing grandson.

Other characters that would normally be temporary extras look as if they'll make regular appearance from the lawyer who idolizes this surfing family to the retired police officer. Episode one doesn't clearly define the relationships, but that's not important at this point of the show.

What is important is that this show is clearly more than a dysfunctional surfing family. In fact, that's who they are, but not what the show is about.

It's about some serious mysticism. The grandfather clearly has some extraordinary issues. But mostly, it's about the title... "John From Cincinnati".

Possible spoilers from episode one... At first, John appears mentally challenged, but that's not the case at all. He's either a genius human with some amensia and amazing gifts or not human and learning as he goes.

Definite spoilers... It's apparent that something "supernatural" is going on. Either the pockets in his pants grant wishes or that's just a convenient location for things to appear at John's (probably subconscious) will.
-- a guy is willing to drive him to a location for $50 and the exact amount falls out of his pocket.
-- another guy demands $2300 and that amount appears.
-- he needs an "ID" with his name on it and a credit card appears.
-- a cell phone is needed and bam, it's there.

His pockets always seem empty until something is specifically requested.

As for his genius or inhuman abilities... he's never surfed before, watches one run and can do the manuevers easily.

I didn't want to watch the show, but I'm glad my wife made us as the Surfing and Dysfunctional parts of the show are just part of the life of the characters and not the central theme.

Who's John from Cincinnati? Will the show get cancelled before we find out?
